Rescue Me ID: 14-09-16-00059Harvey (female)

Australian Cattle Dog    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Harvey is a wonderful dog and a loved member of our family. Unfortunately we have fallen on hard times and can not afford to keep her nor give her the love and attention she deserves. She loves to play with other dogs. She gets along with most dogs as long as she does not feel threatened by them. She also gets along with most people, but is best with women. She has a tendency to not bite, but nip at the ankles of men and sometimes kids. She usually responds well to a simple 'No' and will stop. She is a herding dog and it is just apart of her nature. Harvey knows her basic tricks such as sit, lay down, roll over, and talk. We love her and ... (Read More)really hope to find her a good loving home. (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 14-09-16-00019Sparky (male)

Jack Russell    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Female Dogs Only, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: High Energy, Very Submissive
Health: Needs to be Neutered, Fearful/Anxious

Sparky came to us in the middle of the night scratching on the door. He is a well bahaved, house broken, loving dog. Unsure of his actual age, but guessing in between 2-5 years. Also, unsure of his last vet visit or vaccinations, but seems all around healthy. We attempted to find his owners by calling the number on his tag and posting signs, but phone was disconnected and nobody claimed him. He appears to possibly have been beaten because he is very skiddish/submissive to fast movements and loud voices. He is not bowl aggressive to people, but will growl at the other animals if they get close. There are no children in the home, but ... (Read More)loves all people he has come in contact with here. We have four other dogs and a cat. He gets along with the female Toy Poodle, female Chocolate Lab, & female Lab Mix. He just ignores the cat for the most part until my cat has his all mighty power trip then Sparky just gets excited and/or skiddish but never aggressive. My other dog is an un-neutered 60lb Lab Mix puppy and Sparky definitely tries to show dominance. I adore him, but he cannot get along with my male puppy. He loves playing with the female dogs and us, running, and cuddling UNDER the blankets. If you howl, he will sing along with you. Sweet, sweet dog! I love all animals, so I am very protective of him and want an amazing home for this darling boy. If he could get along with my boy dog I would keep him in a heart beat and make him apart of this family more so than he has already become in the last month. (Less)

Great Pyrenees Mix    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Not Good w/ Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Very High Energy, Very Dominant
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Ponyo is a sweet, smart girl who is eager to please, but a little hard headed. She is not good with small dogs, cats, or other small animals. She had a very strong prey drive and would not be a good farm dog. She would make an excellent guard dog. Her mother is a blue heeler, and her temperament is very much heeler. I hate to loose her, but she needs to be somewhere with lots of open space for her and someone who has time to work with her.

I wish I wasn't here having to do this..But I truly need to find my faithful friend a home..Although she is getting gray around her muzzle she is still as cute and beautiful as she was when she was a puppy..she has a Shepard personality with a mastiff body.she is an Excellent watch dog.And It's my fault she isn't real people friendly as it's always been just her and I in the country..There is sum people she'll take right to..(like the gal at the vet the last time I had to board her) and sum she wants nothing to do with..she's about 125 lbs and thinks she can crawl in ur lap..She has been pretty much a house dog..Wasn't when she was young but ... (Read More)now she is scared to death of thunder/gun shots/fireworks etc..so she is inside when anything is going on..She is addicted to frisbees (just cant throw them high as she has the long mastiff body, (twisted once jumping for it and hurt herself)..and she loves her kitty pool..I just want sumone to love her as much as I do and take care of her..She's smart as a whip and understands everything I say..and I know she can feel my anxiety now as she stays with me almost constant..I am moving the end of Oct, and if I can't find sumone to give her a home I'll have to put her down peacefully never thinking I deserted her..     He is at a local kill shelter, brought in as a straw, he has almost been adopted 2 times, however he growls at people when they first come to his pen. My kids have petted him as well several times and he has never bitten anyone, just growls until he knows he is OK.

Troy is a 15 lb shih tzu who is in desperate need of a new home. He is gray and white and very sweet. Children tend to make him a little nervous. Not all but mostly babies that grab him or loud running children. My mother adopted him from a human society last year. She is unable to take care of him the way he should be. Now I am working which requires some travel so I can't be there to take care of him either. I have never used a rescue before and not sure how it works. I just know my Mom is taking him to Humane society today. He does have a skin allergy and stopped tear ducts that require care. So I feel he doesn't have a chance there. ... (Read More) If you are interested in adopting me: 1) Write down my Animal ID # . 2) Make sure to mention Animal ID # when visiting or calling. 3) Remember all adoptions stop 30 minutes prior to closing time. 3) You will not be allowed to place a hold on me. 4) I cannot be shipped to you. 5) Before adopting me, you can spend time with me outside or in a meet and greet room. Please ask for assistance. 6) We take cash, checks, debit cards, VISA and Mastercard as a method of payment. **IMPORTANT: Huntsville Animal Services cannot guarantee that I will still be available for adoption as we do not hold animals for anyone under any circumstances. Animals are adopted on a first come, first serve basis. You may want to call and ask if I am still available prior to visiting the shelter. When you adopt me, I will stay at the shelter and be taken to the veterinarian of your choice where I will be spayed or neutered before going to my new home. If I am already spayed or neutered, I can go home with you upon adoption. My adoption cost is very affordable and includes my adoption fee, spay/neuter, vaccinations, deworming, license (if you live within Huntsville city limits), a collar and personalized ID tag. Please know that a high percentage of animals in the shelter are brought in as strays. It is impossible to know anything about a stray animal and many times we can only make our best educated guess on breeds, age, etc. Every animal you see posted here has passed a general temperament test as performed by shelter staff and it is considered to be non-aggressive. ADOPTION FEES Dogs: $80 - 170 - includes spay/neuter surgery, vaccinations, rabies voucher, deworming, *heart worm and flea/tick prevention; purebred dogs and puppies tend to cost more and dogs that have been in the shelter longer will probably cost less. Cats: The shelter is currently running a $35 special on cats. (regularly $80) - includes spay/neuter surgery, vaccinations, feline aids/leukemia testing, rabies voucher, deworming, *heart worm and flea/tick prevention LICENSE FEES $10 - 1 year license $35 - Lifetime license EVERY ADOPTER RESIDING IN THE CITY OF HUNTSVILLE, AL WILL BE REQUIRED TO PURCHASE ONE OF THE ABOVE LICENSE OPTIONS AT TIME OF ADOPTION OPTIONAL SERVICES $10 - Heartworm test. Blood test known as the 'snap test' that shows when heart worm antigens are present in the blood. $20 - Microchip. Another line of defense to help you get your pet back in the event he/she is lost. This is especially recommended for those pets known to climb fences, chew collars/tags, etc. Start your new pup out right by gentle training and socialization. 'Pit bull mixes': Pit bull mixes get a bad rap. First of all, the American Pit bull was historically a dog that was intelligent, loyal and trusted. It was often used to oversee children while they played. Remember Petey? Then, as other breeds gained popularity, usually for their designer conformation ('attractiveness'), the pit bull fell by the wayside and eventually was bred with other breeds for fighting and aggressiveness and their inherent trustworthiness was overshadowed. The American pit bull is different from other bull dog breeds and yet they are typically lumped together. Many are actually American bulldogs, American Staffordshire terriers, boxer mixes, etc. And what percentage of pit bull traits gets a dog declared to be pit bull over whatever other breed he might be mixed with? But more importantly, the pit bull is more typically sweet natured and friendly when trained and socialized correctly. Please do not be turned off if a dog that appeals to you is labeled 'pit bull mix'. Come meet it. You will probably be pleasantly surprised and may consider adopting one of the most difficult dogs to find a home for, due to no fault of its own. Whatever dog you bring in to the family, all of the people need to be the pack leaders, whether adults or children. Follow this rule from day one, and no matter what dog you adopt, you'll be working to ensure an enjoyable experience. Pit mixes are typically strong and focused and will require regular exercise. A 'power breed waiver' may be required stating that you acknowledge that this dog will be strong and/or large and may need appropriate training and handling. (Less)

Lab    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Submissive
Health: Needs to be Neutered

Chief is a older lab mix puppy that has shown up in our yard. He is very sweet and plays well with both small and large dogs. We do not have a fenced in yard and already have 3 dogs and two cats and cannot take in another. He needs a good, safe home where he can be loved. He is very sweet and comes when called. I will not let him go just to a 'good home' though. We will need to meet and let him be introduced to any other pets you have. Also, a recommendation from your vet would be preferred. He is such a good dog that I want to ensure he goes to an equally good home.

This dog has been designated by the shelter as a 'pit bull mix' but her conformation does not seem to justify it. I guess the brindle coloring might have been the determining factor. This is an issue that is complicated and difficult for many of us to understand and does not seem to be a priority with the shelter in general. Enough to say that a breed designation is largely subjective if there is no owner turn-in where information is provided (and even that is often questionable). A poor guess is most damaging where it involves a dog now deemed a 'pit bull mix' and possibly requiring a 'power waiver' to be signed. This is very misleading ... (Read More)when the reality is that there is no genetic basis for the pit bull designation. I just decided to explain why I will sometimes put the breed I feel is appropriate up above instead of what the shelter has designated, but you should still be aware of what breed they are using as that is the information they use along with the i.d. number in the paperwork. If you confront a behavior problem you are not sure what to do about, Laurel Rose is a dog trainer in Huntsville who has offered to meet with people who adopt dogs from the Huntsville Animal Shelter for a free evaluation. Phone is: (256) 890-1234. Labrador Retrievers One of the most popular breeds all around, we have documented Labradors elsewhere as the best dog to have if you're looking for a date, the only breed accepted for training as arson dogs, and one of the more popular breeds for service dogs. For a family, there's hardly a better choice. Labradors love to please their humans, being playful, protective, loving, and reliable. There's nothing that a Lab loves more than to show off by learning a new trick, even if they manage to learn that new trick before you've taught it to them. They are canine 'Einsteins'. (Less)

Very loving energetic dog. Loves to run and go on walks. He is good with our shitzu yorkie but I'm very cautious and fearful of dog fights so I have not brought him around other pups much. We have two young children and he's great around them. However, we do not allow him to have dog bones because he is territorial over them. Unfortunately our lifestyle/occupation no longer accommodates pets and we want to find him a good home.

Hi! My name is Delilah and I am the sweetest little girl. I was rescued from a shelter in Albertville, AL and am staying with my foster mom. I think I'm 7 months old and still act like a puppy every now and then. I weigh about 35 pounds and they don't think I'm going to get much bigger. I have quite the figure. I'm short and squatty and my foster mom giggles sometimes just looking at me. She loves me a whole lot but she can't keep me. I get along great with her 2 dogs and cat. I like to be around kids too. I prefer a slow introduction to new dogs as I can get overwhelmed with too much activity. I tend to get along with more ... (Read More)dominant dogs but I can adjust to any personality. I've almost got the potty training down but I still have accidents every now and then but I get better every day. My foster mom tells me that I'm very smart. I love to go on walks and watch the squirrels. I love people! I want to be around them and give them kisses. I'm a cuddle bug and I promise you'll never wake up in a bad mood again! I have pretty low energy for a puppy but I still love to act silly and play with my furry friends. I just want to be in a home where I can be loved and I would really like to have a playmate. Am I the dog for you?? You won't be disappointed, I promise!!! Siberian Husky    Age: Puppy

Meet 'Kiyah'!! Although Kiyah may look like a happy and healthy pup, she just recently came from a bad situation.:( Shewas advertised on a local 'Swap & Shop' as 'FREE TO GOOD HOME'. She was tied up to a dog house in a backyard. VERY dirty, with matted hair and was nothing but skin and bones. She was SO thrilled when I walked up to her she could hardly contain herself!!! She was just BEGGING for some attention! As soon as I put her on a leash, she came right with me, jumped into my car and never looked back at her owners. She was so dehydrated, she drank THREE 32 Oz cups of water in the car before I got her home. Once we got her to the house ... (Read More)and fed her, I spent 2 hours bathing, brushing out matts, and drying her. And WOW!! She was a completely different color!! She wasn't yellow and brown, she was WHITE and SILVER! An absolute beauty. Her 2 different eye colors are not an imperfection. This just means she can see heaven and earth! S After her bath, I decided to take her for a run. MAN did she love that!!! Can you imagine feeling the ground move beneath your feet and wind blowing thru your hair for the first time? She was definitely seeing a bit of heaven then!!! Once we got back and rested a bit, we then worked on her 1st command. 'Sit'. This was hard for her at first. I don't think she could quite focus with all the excitement of being in a new place. But with some chicken, and constant praise, I think we have the 'sit' command down. She spent her first night on a queen size bed with a bone by herself and didn't complain a bit. She makes a great inside/outside dog. She doesn't chew up anything, and she's done pretty well with potty training and has only had a couple accidents which could have probably been prevented. I think she LOVES kids, but probably too much for smaller children to handle until she has some more obedience training. Kiyah will be fully vetted, spayed, vaccinated, HWT, bordetella, and microchipped. She will also come with a puppy starter basket with toys and treats ect. :) For more information or an adoption application on 'Kiyah', please email us at 4Legs4Justice@gmail.com. We look forward to hearing from you. Thank you for choosing a RESCUE! There's just nothing better than knowing you've helped save a life!! (Less)
