Personality: Average Energy, Somewhat Dominant

Hank has allergies to environmental factors. His skin is very sensitive. I have 2 small children and one has severe allergies and the pet dander is bothering him. Currently, Hank's skin is in bad shape. We have been bathing him weekly in a special medicated shampoo, changed dog food. However the improvement is not fast enough to help our son. We need a good home for our Hank. He is a great companion and loves to play together and travel.

Pit Bull Mix    Age: Young Adult

Health: Vaccinations Current

Bella came into the shelter underweight and with skin issues back in August. Against all odds, she was adopted in her sad shape, but a week ago, she was returned to the shelter by her family. Thanks to one of our great foster families, she never spent another night in the shelter. She is doing well in her foster home and playing nice with the resident dogs. Spayed, current on vaccinations and microchipped; this little lady is ready for her real forever home. Interested? Please contact her foster mom using this email: amyisbell2013@gmail.com. Rescue Me ID: 14-10-24-00512Magnolia (female)

Ibizan Hound    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: High Energy, Very Submissive
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

In March, I found an open door to a warm home and moved in. I'm called Magnolia because I am white with a little blush. I am looking for a new home in a city with a dog park, a house with a high fence, and hopefully someone who can run with me. Here, I like to escape and chase cars. I am so fast that I beat them and claim them as my prey. That woman who walks with me on the leash is so frustrating because she won't let me chase those infuriating little tree rats. I hooked up with a neighbor dog this summer and shortly afterward was spayed. All shots and meds are up to date. You will need to have a nice big crate for me. I do enjoy ... (Read More)curling up in Sparkie's crate, but she gets so annoyed...You would think it has been hers for 13 years. Do you have piggies? (Pig Ears). I will stop chasing cars and come inside for one of those. I sit. I poo outside and most of the time pee outside. (one of the main reasons that a crate is recommended.) Do you have other doggies? I love to run and wrestle and play with others. Beezers are bred to chase rabbits, so if you have any of those, I will chase them, too. I can be delivered or you can meet us halfway. I look forward to meeting you. (Less)

German Shepherd Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Needs to be Neutered, Vaccinations Current, Heartworm Positive

Radar is a sweet and slightly shy boy who showed up in someone's yard looking for some love. The homeowners were smitten with him, but could not keep him so they brought him to us. He is approximately 2 years old and quite healthy. He is completely passive, even when he was attacked by another dog! He likes to go for walks and scrunch up his blanket to make it a pillow. He would get along fine with other dogs, preferably calm ones, and he seems unconcerned with cats. Radar tested positive for heartworms but is not showing any symptoms. Please consider adopting this great guy if you have the financial means to get him treated. We will ... (Read More)also adopt him to a compassionate person who will let him live happily until he needs to be humanely euthanized due to the heartworm symptoms. Please consider helping this guy as we cannot keep him much longer. (Less)

This GORGEOUS girl is incredibly sweet. She was reported to be 10 years old. We don't know the circumstances of her owner giving her up, but we suspect it must be due to illness. She is a well-behaved, well-kept girl! She is most probably spayed although that was not noted.

Home needed for the sweetest dog I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. I found her in the bushes outside our house and she was very scared. We fed her a chicken finger and from then on we have been buddies. She is limping a tad, as something has happened to her back right foot, but she doesn't let that slow her down. I am an unemployed college student and I can not afford to take her to the vet. Other than the leg, she seems perfectly healthy. I live right on the highway and I am afraid that she will get ran over. I try to keep her in the house as much as I can but it's hard. I am running out of options and I want the very best for her. I ... (Read More)see her looking at me wondering if I will abandon her like her last owners did. Sometimes she lays and looks at me for a while before she falls asleep, then she opens her eyes every few minutes to make sure I'm still here. She needs a good home. She deserves a good home. I can only give her so much, but I know that there are some of you that can give her so much more than I can. Can someone give this wonderful dog a home? (Less)

Pepper is a registered yorkie poo we bought her and salt our white full blood chihuahua 3 yes ago they are both about 3 1/2 yr old. Me and my wife have recently retired and started living full time on the road in our motorhome it was in that confined space that we found out my wife is highly allergic to the dogs. We have had to make arrangements for the dogs to travel in rd:n. our tow vehicle and we purchased a pin that's about 4 ft x 8ft and they have a latrherge carrier on wheels that looks like our motorhome that reads ruffing it painted on the side and that's where they sleep now. If we bring them in it's just a short time before my ... (Read More)wife can't breath we have emergency inhalers as well as a nebulizer that we use when things get bad. We didn't have this problem at home they had there own room actually there own floor as we gave them the entire basement to run and play in so the air mixture was a lot better and well circulated.salt is a good dog but very protective of pepper he haas not bit anyone but looks like he is when either one is away from the other they get depressed. That's why the need to stay together pepper is playful as the day we got her. She is the color of pepper and he is white like salt thus the names salt and pepper. Both are current on there shots and flea stuff. We just need a good home for them. We lost our 17 yr old daughter in a car wreck in 2006 and she was a pet lover giving them up is hard for us but it's not fair for my wife or the babies. Please help us find a good home for the babies and we can all live happily ever after. I will send photos wed oct 22 thank you (Less)

Found as a stray that appears to have been dumped by owners for a developing skin condition. He has been vetted, is on antibiotics and is already on his way to a full recovery! He is absolutely adorable and is very much still in the puppy play phase as he is only 1-2 years old. He has shown no aggression towards female dogs but hasn't been exposed to cats or kids since found. If your're able to open your heart and home to the big guy please let me know.

1 year old. Chihuahua x Corgi cross? Short tail. Double dewclaws on back. Very high energy. Needs an active family and lots of room to play. Not good with chickens. Will roam if let loose, but will come back eventually (oops!). Already neutered and up to date on all shots. Very sweet boy. Tries very hard to please. Has a bit of ADHD and OCD (just kidding!). Does well on car rides. Was crate trained and house-broken, but has been outside lately. I don't think it would take him long to get back into the habit of being indoors. He always squats outside to do his business--never lifts his leg. He gets along great with everyone he ... (Read More)meets. He listens well (generally). He's always on the move, but keeps track of where you are at all times. He's not a lap dog, but he's so sweet! He just needs an ACTIVE home! He's Heartworm Negative, too. (Less)

Animals are adopted on a first come, first serve basis. You may want to call and ask if I am still available prior to visiting the shelter. When you adopt me, I will stay at the shelter and be taken to the veterinarian of your choice where I will be spayed or neutered before going to my new home. If I am already spayed or neutered, I can go home with you upon adoption. My adoption cost is very affordable and includes my adoption fee, spay/neuter, vaccinations, deworming, license (if you live within Huntsville city limits), a collar and personalized ID tag. Please know that a high percentage of animals in the shelter are brought in as strays. It is impossible to know anything about a stray animal and many times we can only make our best educated guess on breeds, age, etc. Every animal you see posted here has passed a general temperament test as performed by shelter staff and it is considered to be non-aggressive. ADOPTION FEES Dogs: $80 - 170 - includes spay/neuter surgery, vaccinations, rabies voucher, deworming, *heart worm and flea/tick prevention; purebred dogs and puppies tend to cost more and dogs that have been in the shelter longer will probably cost less. Cats: The shelter is currently running a $35 special on cats. (regularly $80) - includes spay/neuter surgery, vaccinations, feline aids/leukemia testing, rabies voucher, deworming, *heart worm and flea/tick prevention LICENSE FEES $10 - 1 year license $35 - Lifetime license EVERY ADOPTER RESIDING IN THE CITY OF HUNTSVILLE, AL WILL BE REQUIRED TO PURCHASE ONE OF THE ABOVE LICENSE OPTIONS AT TIME OF ADOPTION OPTIONAL SERVICES $10 - Heartworm test. Blood test known as the 'snap test' that shows when heart worm antigens are present in the blood. $20 - Microchip. Another line of defense to help you get your pet back in the event he/she is lost. This is especially recommended for those pets known to climb fences, chew collars/tags, etc. Start your new pup out right by gentle training and socialization. If you confront a behavior problem you are not sure what to do about, Laurel Rose is a dog trainer in Huntsville who has offered to meet with people who adopt dogs from the Huntsville Animal Shelter for a free evaluation. Phone is: (256) 890-1234. 'Pit bull mixes': Pit bull mixes get a bad rap. First of all, the American Pit bull was historically a dog that was intelligent, loyal and trusted. It was often used to oversee children while they played. Remember Petey? Then, as other breeds gained popularity, usually for their designer conformation ('attractiveness'), the pit bull fell by the wayside and eventually was bred with other breeds for fighting and aggressiveness and their inherent trustworthiness was overshadowed. The American pit bull is different from other bull dog breeds and yet they are typically lumped together. Many are actually American bulldogs, American Staffordshire terriers, boxer mixes, etc. And what percentage of pit bull traits gets a dog declared to be pit bull over whatever other breed he might be mixed with? But more importantly, the pit bull is more typically sweet natured and friendly when trained and socialized correctly. Please do not be turned off if a dog that appeals to you is labeled 'pit bull mix'. Come meet it. You will probably be pleasantly surprised and may consider adopting one of the most difficult dogs to find a home for, due to no fault of its own. Whatever dog you bring in to the family, all of the people need to be the pack leaders, whether adults or children. Follow this rule from day one, and no matter what dog you adopt, you'll be working to ensure an enjoyable experience. Pit mixes are typically strong and focused and will require regular exercise. A 'power breed waiver' may be required stating that you acknowledge that this dog will be strong and/or large and may need appropriate training and handling. (Less)

Very bad photo of a beautiful chocolate lab. Labrador Retrievers: One of the most popular breeds all around, we have documented Labradors as the best dog to have if you're looking for a date, the only breed accepted for training as arson dogs, and one of the more popular breeds for service dogs. For a family, there's hardly a better choice. Labradors love to please their humans, being playful, protective, loving, and reliable. There's nothing that a Lab loves more than to show off by learning a new trick, even if they manage to learn that new trick before you've taught it to them. They are canine 'Einsteins'. Border Collie Mix    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Cats, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Submissive
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Luna loves with all her heart. She's somewhat skittish but it only takes a little while and with a little petting, she's at your side. Found her voice and is a great watch dog. She does try to herd you if you're moving quickly. I let my granddaughter get in her face, I trust her that much. She's a beautiful girl. I don't have the space and I took her when her past owners had to let her go. She gets along with the cats too (now that the old grouch cat swatted at her in the beginning), she's very respectful. Kids love her. She may be a purebred. Certainly acts like a herd dog and looks it.

I found this dog on 10/8/14. I assumed Animal Services would help me give this dog the best life, and they've chosen to euthanize today because he has skin allergies that make him unappealing for adoption. If anyone is interested in temporarily fostering him until we can find a home, please contact me as he's under my name. If you're not interested, please spread the word. (Less)

Bull Terrier Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Not Good w/ Other Dogs, Not Good w/ Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: High Energy, Submissive
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Sparta is a sweet and energetic 2 yo. Mom was English bull terrier and Dad was a police trained German shepherd. She's great with kids and has been to obedience school. So she's house-broken and leash trained. She provides a great home security system as well as a loving companion. She has an impressive bark that will deter anyone not welcome to your home, but she also has some if the sweetest and funniest vocalizations that she saves for us. We have to find Sparta a new home, unfortunately because she tries to dominate other dogs, particularly females and smaller dogs. She needs to be an only dog, preferably and this has been our ... She will be euthanized no later than Friday, Oct. 17 if i can not find a suitable home, and that would be terrible because she truly is one-of-a-kind and LOVES people. Chow Chow Mix    Age: Adult

My wife and I adopted Miles when he was betwen 1-2 years old and have had him for over 5 years. He is a chow/golden retriever mix...very loyal, loving, and beautiful. He is also very laid back (sometimes sleeps on his back w legs up), while also being a great watchdog at the same time. I LOVE THIS DOG! We recently moved and during the first month had an isolated incident where miles got confused during playtime and bit my 4 year old daughter when she got head level with him and took his toy. We have a new baby now that's crawling/ pulling up so trying to find him a good home as soon as possible. He is not a biter and this is the only time it ... American Bulldog Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Not Good with Cats, Good with Adult Women Only
Personality: Very High Energy, Somewhat Dominant
Health: Needs to be Neutered

Spanky's owner passed away. He is good with females and 'some' males. He's been good with my grandkids but not sure about others. I'll try to get a pic. He reminds you of Little Rascals dog. Spanky will only go to an approved home that understands dogs that can be aggressive. We are not sure what happened to Spanky but he becomes aggressive to certain male humans only. My daughter is homing him at the moment. He was her father's dog. She has four dogs and I have four dogs otherwise Spanky would stay with us. I just can't stand seeing him on a chain and I know the HS would put him down. Surely there has to be an older female human that would ... (Read More)enjoy him and give him a home. (Less)

Shih Tzu    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Low Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Percy is a sweet boy but is not 100% house trained. I have a doggy door which he does not use to 'go out' he prefers inside so I use a tray with puppy pads - he will use these to pee on. To be fair to him he needs more attention to get this down but I work 2 jobs. He has lived around 2 bassets, a 3 and 4 year old and a cat. He has done very well with all. He is very loving and likes nothing better than to sit in your lap with a large bone - he'd stay there all day if given the opportunity. I will have a picture up soon. Please think about giving Percy a home with you. He will give you love and kisses.

He would make a great family pet.

Spanky found his way to our shelter after a good Samaritan picked him up out of the road. He was badly injured having just been hit by a car! Our organization scraped together the money for surgery as he was too fine of a dog to put him down just because of a broken leg. The expense of his medical treatment was far more than we should have spent, but the investment will pay off when he is adopted into a loving home.     We had a female puppey show up today. She is very energetic and sweet. She is short haired and looks almost like a German Shephard. I'd say she is somewhere around 7 months old and is a little taller than our 4 year old Basset Hound / Weiner dog mix so she may be a medium-sized to larger breed dog fully grown. I tried to upload a photo but the photo editor doesn't seem to work. I can email or text a picture. We are located in Hueytown, Al.

Personality: Average Energy, Very Submissive
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Buddy is the iconic dog...perpetually happy regardless of his circumstances! He is a high energy dog despite a slight heart murmur that appears to be harmless. When he gets excited, he bounces off the ground with all fours. He's been in our shelter way too long and we can't keep him forever even if we'd like to! He is sweet and non-aggressive towards other dogs. He just an all around good guy who needs a home that's better than chain link and concrete. Can you provide such a place for this sweet boy before his time in the shelter runs out?

German Shepherd Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: High Energy, Very Submissive
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Lorenzo is a sweet and goofy boy who was abandoned by a family who split from their rental house. The landlord brought him to us as he deserves a second chance. He is about 3 1/2 years old, heartworm negative and quite healthy. Lorenzo is calm and polite in his kennel and just loves to get out for walks. He bounces around a bit on the leash at first as he has so much energy build up from being caged. This dog would do so much better as a running partner, in a big fenced yard or on a lot of acreage as he really needs to stretch his legs more than we can allow him to do in the shelter. Pit Bull    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Submissive
Health: Vaccinations Current

Missy is one of those sweet, unspoiled pit bulls that could be an ambassador for the breed. She showed up at a school one day and was obviously a beloved pet at one time. She is well mannered and sweet, but quite sad being in "jail" when she clearly had a home at one time. We try to help her enjoy life with a carpet and periodic walks, but what she really needs is a real home. She is non-aggressive towards other dogs, but quite interested in cats. Although she is sweet as pie, we recommend she go to a home without small children based on her breed. This would be waived if clear loving experience with pit bulls can be ... Mauli was a stray found wondering the fields of Northeast AL. Small and all alone, she was just looking for someone to take her and keep her safe. She is very playful with the other dogs and loves kids. She still needs some basic training but is learning her Q's quickly.

 Abused/Neglected, Fearful/Anxious

marsha came from a high kill shelter in Northeast AL. She is a shy girl but will let you pet her and talk to her. It appears she has been severely abused because of the way she will roll onto her back when approached. With the right handler and time, patience and lots of TLC, Marsha will make a great companion. She tested very light positive for HW and has just completed her treatments. She will be retested for HW and if God willing, she will be negative. I will only adopt to a quiet household with no more than two dogs.

With lots of TLC and proper meds, Lacey is alive and doing well! She is so sweet and affectionate. She does not like a crate but preferrs to sleep at the foot of the bed. She is mostly house broke but with all the health issues, she has had a few accidents in the house. She is a wonderful dog and would make a great companion for anyone. She would be great for an elderly person or couple, and would do good in an apartment ... (Read More)or small house. (Less)
