I have a brother, Levi, and a pretty little sister, named Lindsay. They also are waiting for their forever homes. We are approximately 7 or 8 weeks old, as of 5/31/2012. You might wonder how such sweet little puppies came to the shelter. Well, a man had abandoned several dogs when he left his old house out in the country. The dogs became feral or wild. The nice Humane Society lady saw them once and then began trying to rescue the dogs...she really was so patient and persistent. She tried to catch the dogs but they were too frightened...but she always left them food. I told you she was kind. Then, one day, she saw that one dog had given birth and she began searching for the puppies. She searched and searched, walking and walking over several acres until she found us under a falling-down shed. She was so happy to find us...she had tears in her eyes as she picked-up each one of us and hugged and kissed us. She still goes back to try to catch my Momma and the other dogs but they hide. But she still leaves them food and goes back to look for them often. I have been so happy here at the shelter....lots of hugs and kisses and good food! One of the nice volunteers takes us home for 'sleep-overs' too. They call that 'socialization'. She is going to work on house-training, too. She says we are little 'treasures' who are ready to find their forever families and forever homes. We all are so excited to find you! The shelter people keep telling me I am such a sweet, gentle, laid-back girl that anyone would be thrilled to have me.... they tell me not to give up. I am a Boxer mix with beautiful eyes and 'tiger-striped' coloring. They say I am small in size, (that means I am short) and have lost my girlish figure, but my friends assure me that this happens with age. They say I am 'sweet as honey,' that's how I got my name. I do not like to 'go potty' in my kennel and will hold it until they let me out in the yard. I've heard the kennel staff say I am already HOUSETRAINED (which seems to be a good thing)! I have one volunteer friend who took me to an adoption event and has been bragging about me ever since. She looked at me laying beside her and I looked deep in her eyes for a long time, she told me that eye contact is a sign of intelligence and she knew I was special....that made me feel so good, for someone to see beyond my shyness... She also found out that I don't like to have my picture taken! I quickly learned what that contraption with the flash was and every time she tried to sneak it out to take my picture, I would turn around and face the wall! Up for adoption is Sadie. She is a 10-month-old Yorkshire Terrier Mix located in Fort Smith, Arkansas. She is a sweet and loving 9 1/2 pound pup! A friend of mine found Sadie, roaming in the middle of a street. When she finally found Sadie's owner, the lady simply said she wanted rid of the dog and was sick of cleaning the dog poop out of her yard. The previous owner also said she was an outside dog only. Sadie has been with me nine days now. I have taken her to the vet for a check-up. She is now up to date on all vaccines, and tested heartworm negative. I also have her on heartworm prevention and monthly flea medication, and on the ... (Read More)18th of June I have an appointment to have her fixed (if there is a cancellation before then, I am on the quick call list). Sadie does well with men, women, children, and other dogs of the same size. I am not so sure about cats, as I have never had her around any before. Potty training is going quite well. She always potties outside when she first goes out, but she has had two accidents in the house. I blame both times on myself, because I got a little too lax and comfortable with her. Titan is our 2.5 y/o Black/White Great Dane w/o papers. We adopted him when he was 6 weeks old when we lived in Florida and he has grown up around my 4 y/o daughter. We have since moved to home to Arkansas when i separated from the military. We now lived around more people and children he is not use to, last night my 18 month old nephew was playing with him and petting him when Titan suddenly nipped him in the face, he had a puncture under his eye and chin, Titan did not maul him, did not further pursue any actions after the nip, to the best of our knowledge my nephew maybe stepped on his leg or did something to cause discomfort, we cant ... We are/were weighing euthanasia (which we have NEVER done), but considering his history of always being gentle and the possibility of us missing fully what happened, I bear the responsibility of the incident so we want him to have a second chance. This is a very hard decision for our family, as we are avid animal lovers as well, we treat them like family and have 2 dogs we rescued ourselves, a Bloodhound and a PitBull mix and we also have a Yorkie we have had for 7 years, as bad as it hurts us we cannot take the chance of it happening again, we have too many nieces and nephews and our daughters friends coming over to play so he has to go. I was ... (Read More)just about 5 months old, born approximately 1/20/2012, when the nice Humane Society people rescued me and my sister (Peaches) and my brother ( Parker). They're also very sweet little puppies looking for a loving home. The nice shelter people found us on a rural country road....we had been abandoned by people who didn't want us. Boy, it is really hard for three little puppies, ALL ALONE, in very, very hot weather by ourselves. There were people who saw us and knew we were trying to survive in the woods but they never tried to help us. How can people not want to help sweet puppies... especially when they see them for over three weeks? All we had to eat was a dead armadillo that we found...we'd been eating it for quite a while. It tasted so nasty...but we were so hungry. Some people would drive by and throw junk food from their cars....we ate anything we could find. We were really lucky that there was a creek nearby; we stayed close by it so that we would have water to drink. ) When the shelter people found us, we were so excited. But we were scared, too, because no one had ever been nice to us. They took us here to the shelter and are taking very good care of us. The are giving us food, REAL FOOD, treats, clean water, nice beds, no frightening sounds of animals in the woods, no more fleas and ticks, no speeding cars going by and the very best part.....they are so nice to us. They sat by us and gave us time to become accustomed to their petting and affection because we were kind of shy and unsure of ourselves. We LOVE TO PLAY with the people when we are outside ... they are teaching us to walk on leashes and to play. I am a little shy.....but when the loving starts, I am RIGHT there for my share! They say we just need lots of good food, lots of love and we are ready to go! And, boy, we are getting both! They told us that we are going to have 'forever homes and forever families' ...I don't know what that means but I've heard them say that we will be loved and treasured forever! Hugs, kisses, treats, walks, warm beds, some one to pet and love us......sounds like real doggie heaven to me! I love playing and I love affection... I heard them say I am VERY SWEET AND GENTLE and that I have such a good time playing with the other dogs at the kennel. I'm a real CUTIE ....perfect for anyone who has lots of love and who wants a forever best fur friend. She was very pregnant and had her puppies within several days of arriving. She needed help in taking care of all my sisters and brothers as she was very young herself and malnourished. Sadly, I think they just fell in love with a puppy and, as I grew, maybe were not ready or willing to take responsibility for a new family member. So they returned me.... I wonder if they even miss me? I know I miss them and I miss not having a home. So, here I am, back at the Humane Society with my Mom, Raven. I am sooo looking forward to my new home. I promise I will be so good. Everyone here says I am very friendly and that I get along nicely with other dog friends. The volunteers are helping me to learn to walk on a leash and know that I can do it.... I just never had anyone show me how. We tried extensively to locate her owner and through a tip realized that she is likely the same dog belonging to a neighbor of our tipster. The tipster believed this dog to be ... (Read More)abandoned because the probable owner has abruptly moved away and subsequently been jailed. All phone numbers have been disconnected. Baby is also not micro-chipped and there was no collar, so her identity cannot be known for sure. Now, working with an animal advocate from the Animal League of Washington County, Baby is been taken to the vet for a full workup. She will be spayed and she is having surgery on a neglected eyelid issue this morning, which should improve her vision drastically. Her blood work and other tests are coming back as 'healthy'. Baby is strong and muscular, weighing about 57 pounds and she is likely about 2-3 years old. Her back is scarred, so she looks like she has been in fights before. Her demeanor is very loyal now that she seems to have shaken off the trauma of being abandoned. She is happy and smiling when you pet her and she loves to play fetch. We originally kept our boys (5 & 7) away from her because she was a stray, but about 4 days into her stay at our house we found Baby happily running alongside of them when they were riding their bikes. The kids loved her. She does not seem to like our other dog, a standard poodle, but what is unknown is if she is compatible with other dogs. Much of her defensive growling at our dog could be because of poor eyesight, which is being fixed today, and because she hasn't been spayed, which will also be fixed this week. She loves people and rolls over for petting and love. We cannot keep her because of her aversion to our dominant female dog and because we have a small baby and her sheer weight is enough to give us pause because one over-eager wag could knock our baby down. So, we are ACTIVELY and DESPERATELY looking for a forever home for Baby. (We started calling her Baby because she acts like a big baby, even though she may not look quite like it.) She is likely best suited in a home with older kids or teens or a home with all adults.
