A little about Brix. He is now 4 1/2 yrs old, I've had him since he was two. His previous owner raised him next to another smaller dog and with a 2 yr old boy. He had to move and couldn't take him. I took him but now we are expecting our 3rd child plus now I have to commute 4 hrs a day to work. Needless to say, we can no longer give him the attention that he deserves. Now for the fun stuff. First and most of all, his most dangerous feature is his tail! its like a whip specially when he gets excited. second, its his tongue, he will lick you for ever. As far as guard dog, NOT! He is friendly towards other dogs, mostly he will just ignore them. He will cry for you! there have been times that we had to step out and couldn't take him, thus had to put him in a kennel........he cries for you. His shots are up to date and he had a full physical in Nov 2012, he even got checked for heartworms and other nasties. He passed with flying colors. Because Tiffy Rose was so full of matted hair the shelter staff didn't realize that she was pregnant until she started having her puppies the day after entering the shelter as a stray. Mystery surrounds this guy, and I've named him MERLIN, since his name is one of those mysteries. MERLIN (A4572712) went into the high-intake, high-kill Baldwin Park Shelter (L.A., CA. 626-430-2378) as an Owner Surrender back on May 6. He is listed as being a 10-year old fawn Cocker Spaniel. These things alone make an urgent situation, but on top of that, he's also in quarantine for biting! Apparently, he bit the owner's brother while he was putting him into the truck. The one helpful note is that it does say that the bite was provoked. Here's where it gets weird: it says he is available on 10/17/13 and due out on 10/18/13. Now, this is ... (Read More)probably a typo...even the person I talked to said this. However, this leaves this poor guy in limbo, because he's not really coming up as 'adoptable,' nor as 'lost' (since he was owner-surrendered). And since he's in quarantine, it's hard to even see him at the shelter. I found him by accident, and was able to get a few pics through the extra close and extra thick bars of his cage (and from the outside because the inside section is closed to the public). So, he has no medical notes, and no behavioral notes while at the shelter. He was really nice to me (through the cage) when I met him. He actually seems like a pretty happy guy. He's a big Cocker, probably about 40 pounds....but in good shape. I will continue trying to find out what the deal is as far as availability...but I recommend that a rescue find out too. My concern is that, at some point, they will figure out the error, and then not give him much time because he would have already been there quite a while! Here's the dog I found on Saturday, May 18th. He was in the employee parking lot behind the library at Tujunga and Magnolia in North Hollywood when we arrived shortly after 3:00 pm. Library workers say that when they arrived at 8:00 am, the dog was already there. They had no luck making physical contact with the dog. He wouldn't come to me, but after about 5 minutes of sweet talking, he stopped running away and was content to sit a couple of feet away from me. A woman with me had him in her lap within a couple of minutes. He's very sweet and affectionate. He was not especially hungry or thirsty and appeared to be in excellent health, ... He was energetic and a little crazy at first, but settled down after a very short time on the leash. He was very good with the other dogs in our group (a German Shepherd, a boxer/pit mix and a Pomeranian). We got him back to the car and took him to the East Valley shelter in Van Nuys. He was well-behaved and seemed to enjoy the car ride. They took him in at 5:00 pm. One of the workers ID'd the dog's breed as either a Pharaoh hound or a Chihuahua/Pharaoh mix but they only listed him as a chihuahua at the web link. This dog is NOT a full-blooded chihuahua and seems to have been fixed; despite what the animal shelter link below claims, he has been fixed. No chip, no tag, no collar. He was also very clean and appeared to be well-fed. He was not hungry or thirsty out of proportion to his circumstances. This boy is so sweet and well-behaved! In the last 2 months she has personally killed 2 of my chickens, and helped assassinate 2 more chickens this weekend with another dog that is also being re-homed. She continues to harass the rest of my flock, and she also aggressively picks on one of my 3 cats... the other 2 cats are dominant and are able to kick her butt, so she leaves them alone. She also has grooming needs that I cannot accommodate ( Despite spraying efforts we still have a flea problem in the back yard and she is OCD with her chewing, keeping me up at night, so has lost some fur on her hind end. the good news is she is a silly sweetheart when it comes to people. she loves to sit on your lap or in the window and play a guard dog. but she is a bossy aggressive pain in the butt with other animals if they are passive. and she has finally learned to use the doggie door to go outside to relieve herself. all you have to say is 'outside'... and she goes out without a fuss. Perhaps having her spayed will be a solution to her aggression problems, but to be honest, i am overwhelmed with personal problems at the moment and do not have the time to take care of her needs. I received notice from my apartment management, shortly after bringing him home, stating that I needed to get rid of him. But in reality I have 4 CHILDREN! I found this dog scared and walking around a levee road in Stockton, CA on Thursday. I am still trying to find the owners, but it's not looking too good for this sweetheart. He is still young.
