This a a sweet dog that has been wandering all over the area near Guttenberg. We thought it was a neighbors, but he said it was a stray and offered to shoot it. Its a nice dog, unique and medium to large animal with one blue eye and one brown. It is not agressive to people but has killed 3 of our cats on the farm here. It needs a permanent home and some training/discipline. Ancient Mayans (and Zapotec Indians) would use the word Nayeli to tell someone 'I love you.' :) Nayeli was found in the backyard of a home tied to a dog house with no bottom in it and mud all around her. She was confined to her area by a 16 pound logging chain!!!!!! Her body had started to deteriorate due to lack of food and care. She was truly lucky that an animal control officer just happened to see her peeking her head out from her 'dog house.' Once removed from the yard, it was found that Nayeli was being neglected. Yet, she was the sweetest girl when the loving hand of the animal control officer came to release her (and another dog) from the property. (the previous owner has since been found guilty of neglect and sentenced). Nayeli spent a few weeks gaining back weight and being evaluated by vetrinarians. It was discovered that Nayeli's journey was only just beginning. Nayeli was diagnosed with heartworms. :( She has since moved to foster care in Des Moines, Iowa. She lives with 2 children under the age of 4 and another resident female doggy. Nayeli knows sit, shake and down. She is crate trained but does bark when you initially put her in. We had grown to love Farley and could not let him be euthanized, although we had not intended to adopt a dog at the time. So Farley became officially ours in 2010. Since then, we have moved to Iowa City and we've had a daughter who is currently 18 months old. Farley no longer has a health issue - we later discovered that his issues had been due to a tick born illness, which we were able to eliminate with the correct medication. Farley is currently a healthy, approximately 7 year old male (Midwest Animal Rescue was unsure of his exact age). We believe that he is an american staffordshire terrier possibly mixed with a spaniel of some sort. We have never seen Farley be aggressive toward a human. In fact, it's been the opposite. Farley loves adult attention from anyone willing to pet him or give him a belly rub. He loves to cuddle and be near his human. He will excitedly greet you (or anyone coming into your home) at the door. We have one other dog in our home, and with the exception of one unfortunate incident right after we adopted the second dog, our dogs have gotten along great since. Farley has never attacked another dog, and he has been around a few other family members dogs. He does, however, bark and growl aggressively at dogs through the window and also when we go on walks. Farley has quite a bit of nervous energy and seems to be an anxious guy. He does bark a lot through our window at passers by. He loves to leave the house for car rides, but will not sit down, even during a several hours long car ride. He stands the entire time and paces excitedly. We have found that lots of exercise and consistent training and discipline can help with Farley's high energy, barking, and anxious behaviors. Sadly, we have come to the conclusion that with a small child of our own now, we do not have the time to devote to Farley that he desperately needs and deserves. The other reason for our finding Farley a new home is that, although Farley has always adored constant adult attention, he sometimes seems a bit annoyed by our curious 18 month old, who loves to follow him around and 'bother' him. I think I have been forgotten. I am Antonio. My first birthday came and went in October and here I still am. I'm not complaining - I like everyone here at the shelter - but ohhhh it would be so much better to have my own home. I am probably a shepherd/ lab mix and am not a huge boy. I have a little bit of separation anxiety and if you crate me and leave me I will do whatever I have to do to get out of the crate. I would be best in a home with another dog so I have companionship or with someone who is home most of the time. I will need plenty of toys so I have something to play with. Well it's been just about 6 months since I was surrendered with my sister Merry here at the shelter. I came in as Gabe and then I got adopted and my name changed to Max (which is what I go by now). Dogs can make good pets in Iowa if they match your IifestyIe. Dogs have a reputation for being "man's best friend" for excellent reasons. Dogs are wonderful companions. Many breeds, in addition to being affectionate, devoted members of the family, are useful working dogs and guardians. Most dogs form tight bonds with their humans, and need to be cared for like the valuable family members they are. But sadly, some owners do not live up to the responsibility and involvement it takes to properly care for a dog throughout its life. Dogs can become the victims of neglect or active abuse. Some dogs receive tender, attentive care from their owners, but no longer have a home after their owner passes away or experiences a major life event that makes him unable to keep his dog. There are many more dogs than there are homes for dogs, and dogs that are not spayed or neutered can accidentally produce large numbers of puppies, exacerbating overpopulation. For this reason, three to four million dogs, many of them perfectly healthy and wonderful animals, are euthanized in the U.S. each year. Many people get excited about owning a new dog, decide to get a puppy, and then pick one out at a pet shop or visit a breeder with a new litter. However, there are so many wonderful, friendly dogs in need of adoption, including puppies and purebreds. Some of these dogs might even be a better fit for a family than a new puppy; for instance, some adult dogs in need of adoption are already housebroken and obedience trained. Adoption is typically much less expensive than purchasing a dog. People who adopt dogs find the experience extremely rewarding, bond very closely with their dogs, and have the added satisfaction of knowing that one less animal has to be euthanized.
