Due to financial issues we had to move into a small apartment that does not accept animals. We regretfully have to rehome our almost five year old black/white Siberian husky that we have had since he was six weeks old. He is a house dog and has never lived outside, completely house broken. Cora is a super friendly dog that loves everyone she meets and hasn't met a snack she doesn't like either! When she came into Safe Haven she was pregnant and after safely having her 4 puppies, she was a great mom. Toby is a sweet boy with little dog attitude and temperament. We adopted him a year ago and have found he cannot be around cats AT ALL! We have a large female cat and he goes after her regularly. At nine months, we re-enrolled Sasha in an adult obedience class that also included agility training which she seemed to enjoy very much. At age two Sasha started displaying allergy issues and was placed on various remedies which included steroids that helped somewhat, but never took care of the problem. We ... As a result of her allergy issues, it is plain to see she has scratched her ears so bad in the past that her ears are now cauliflowered, At age four Sasha developed an incontinence problem that our vet says is common for spayed females of her particular breed. She is given Proin twice a day to take care of the issue. Grooming: Sasha loves to be brushed with a slicker brush, responds well to baths / nails trims, and is very good about having her teeth brushed. Of course she expects a treat. (Duck Jerky) for good behavior. Food: We feed Sasha a grain free formula dry dog food which seems to help her allergy problem.Sasha is a kenneled dog when we are asleep ever since she has been a puppy. Of course Sasha's kennel would be included with her, including all of her vet paperwork/meds. Sasha is very alert for her age, and considers herself our protector, and the protector of the male shepherd that lives with us. Baer Von Beau Jessen AKC # DN22116603 Birthday: 07/16/2008 in Maquoketa, Iowa Sire: Beau Seefuss AKC # DL90168808 Dam: Princess Peaches III AkC# DN11811101 When Baer was neutered at six months, we also had his hips x-rayed because by then, we had suspicions that he may have dysplasia in one or both hips by the way he walked, jumped, and ran. His X-rays proved to that being the case. We were referred to orthopedic surgeons at Iowa State, and they said that they could correct hips issues such as Baer's if done between the age six and nine months. Baer had been ... (Read More)going to obedience class at the time, so we felt forced to drop him out from class, and scheduled the first of the two separate surgeries. The surgery of his left hip (worse one) went very well, but as with all surgeries there was rehab to get him through. By the time we were planning for the second surgery, he was x-rayed again, and found out the other hip was too far out to operate on, and that arthritis had developed too much in the hip joint. So the end result Baer has one very good hip, and somewhat lame one. This problem doesn't slow him down at all and runs all around the fields behind our house, and outruns our older shepherd when they play together and or when chasing critters/blowing leaves. Because of his arthritis he is given a chewable tablet Carprofen once daily and a glucosamine chewable twice a day. At age three Baer started having gastro problems such as vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, and sudden weight loss. After blood work sent out it had been determined that Baer had a digestive disease very similar to Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency or EPI. To resolve that issue Baer is given a B-12 injection weekly, and takes a medication called Metronidazole twice daily for the rest of his life. Baer has done very well with the problem for over a year now. Grooming: Baer loves to be brushed, and responds well to baths, nail trimming, and is very good about having his teeth brushed. Baer loves to be rewarded for good behavior with a Duck Jerky treat.Food: We feed Baer a grain free formula dry dog food because our other shepherd eats it, and he seems to enjoy the taste. Baer is a kenneled dog when we are gone/asleep ever since he has been a puppy. Of course Baer's kennel would be included with him, including all vet paperwork, meds, and syringes. Baer is a very loving dog full of energy, and is always looking for something to do. He loves to run and play in the fields behind our house, and play with our other shepherd/chase critters. Baer has never really let go of his puppy mentality (like chasing leaves) which at times tries the patience of our other shepherd's. Baer has never met someone that hasn't grown to love him. I saved jake from doggy jail. Hes very lovable, loves kids,adults, and other dogs. He sits, shakes, lays down. Kennel trained,house broke. Loves to run and play outside. Very mellow mister. When I got him he did have yeast infection in his ears but I have medicated his ears and they are back to normal. Very sweet dog. Needs loving home with maybe a fenced in yard so he can play. He loves attention so he needs a home where he will get attention. He does need to be an indoor dog. Jake is very possessive of his chew toys so taking away jakes chew toy is a very bad idea! This beautiful big baby was surrendered by her owners when they decided to move to a home that would not allow Mia to stay with them. We rescued Cooper from a couple who were moving and couldn't take him. We thought that we would be able to take care of him. It turns out we do not have the time to take car of him the way he's suppose to be. He is a good dog and very smart. He is house broken, trained on a leash, and very sweet. Meet Jake. Jake is our 2 year old American Bulldog. We recently moved from a house where we had 5 acres to just having your average size backyard. Unfortunately, Jake was used to having a lot of room to run and has not adjusted well to not having it. With the lack of space and exercise, Jake has started to become destructive in the house and in the backyard. My mother also recently moved in with us and the dog and my mother do not get along. He seems to go out of his way to chew on her shoes, her blankets, anything that is hers! Due to the adjustment issues and issues with my mother, I feel like we have no other choice but to rehome ... (Read More)Jake. Jake needs to go to a home where his exercise needs can be met. He has had some basic obedience, but definitely is in need of training reinforcement. He is a big boy (approx 90 lbs) and doesn't know quite how big he is. He has been around children of all ages, we have an 8 year old that likes to think he is a horse. He is unsure of toddlers, but has never shown any aggression towards them. He is semi-socialized with other dogs (we do have another dog in the home, a 20lb mutt), but definitely needs more work in that area. He has allergy problems that require him to eat organic food, he eats Blue Buffalo and the cost to feed him is approximately $100 a month. I prefer he go to a home that is familar with the breed and also will be requiring a contract allowing follow up visits giving me the right to take the dog out of the home during a 6 month period if I feel it is not working out. I truly love this dog, but I'm watching him turn into a nuisance and not the loving pet he once was and can be again. I will require that he goes into a home with space for him to run, a fenced in backyard, but also knowing that he needs daily exercise on top of that. Jake is crated when we leave the house so you will have to have a large dog crate. Rosie would do best with a Retired person or couple that can baby her and give her attention. She needs stimulation and companionship but is happiest indoors lounging and being underfoot. She is a chubby dog and has been spoiled with human food. She does not care for other dogs. She likes to be the only pet in the house. Dogs can make good pets in Iowa if they match your IifestyIe. Dogs have a reputation for being "man's best friend" for excellent reasons. Dogs are wonderful companions. Many breeds, in addition to being affectionate, devoted members of the family, are useful working dogs and guardians. Most dogs form tight bonds with their humans, and need to be cared for like the valuable family members they are. But sadly, some owners do not live up to the responsibility and involvement it takes to properly care for a dog throughout its life. Dogs can become the victims of neglect or active abuse. Some dogs receive tender, attentive care from their owners, but no longer have a home after their owner passes away or experiences a major life event that makes him unable to keep his dog. There are many more dogs than there are homes for dogs, and dogs that are not spayed or neutered can accidentally produce large numbers of puppies, exacerbating overpopulation. For this reason, three to four million dogs, many of them perfectly healthy and wonderful animals, are euthanized in the U.S. each year. Many people get excited about owning a new dog, decide to get a puppy, and then pick one out at a pet shop or visit a breeder with a new litter. However, there are so many wonderful, friendly dogs in need of adoption, including puppies and purebreds. Some of these dogs might even be a better fit for a family than a new puppy; for instance, some adult dogs in need of adoption are already housebroken and obedience trained. Adoption is typically much less expensive than purchasing a dog. People who adopt dogs find the experience extremely rewarding, bond very closely with their dogs, and have the added satisfaction of knowing that one less animal has to be euthanized.
