We took Lucy in as a foster almost a year ago, this July will be one year. What can we say other than 'we love Lucy'!! Its sounds like a cliche but its true! She is a wonderful dog!! We went from fostering to adopting because we fell in love with her and she with us. She loves everyone in the family, all the neighbors and their kids, she is smart as a whip, can do some amazing stuff with catching balls and frisbies. It breaks our hearts to have to make the decision to re-home her but we have to. We have two older dogs one male and one female. Our older female is the alpha and she has never been as fond of Lucy as we have. The past four ... (Read More)months have brought us to this decision. Our older female tried to attack Lucy twice, well both dogs ended up with some bites and fur lost with both fights. We cannot risk wither dog getting hurt nor do we want to have to keep one dog kenneled all the time, that is not fair to them. So Lucy would have to go to a female dog free home for sure, although she gets along with all dogs at the dog park, it seems alpha females would not be good for her. She gets along fine with our male but he is not a alpha, so even if you have a male and he is the alpha I would say Lucy is not right for your family. Lucy adores kids, loves to play with them, she also loves to herd them, so if you have little ones under 4 I would also say Lucy is not right for you. She would never hurt them on purpose but her 35 lbs are strong and she could knock a little one over easy I would imagine. She needs EXERCISE!!!! This breed needs daily exercise! We either take her for long walks or my husband has a special harness he hooks to his mountain bike and he takes her for bike rides, this by far is her favorite activity! She only sheds once a year!!! She has just done it and she has her beautiful so rabbit fur coat right now. She is full grown 35lbs, blue merle coloring, one black spot over her left eye, brown eyes. She is truly gorgeous. She is house trained as well as fully kennel trained. This dog is a great companion for any one looking to complete their family as long as you do not have any of the contradictions. Jack was my buddy and a darn good hunting dog. He is nine years old but his instincts are excellent. He has no 'formal' training, but he has a couple years of mostly pheasant but some quail and dove hunting experience, with a very soft grip. He is in no way gun shy. He works with a .22 cal fetching dummy. He points, retrieves, he honors other dogs points, he works 30 ft ahead of you as you hunt. He can go all day and pull your truck home if you run out of gas. Dogs can make good pets in Kansas if they match your IifestyIe. Dogs have a reputation for being "man's best friend" for excellent reasons. Dogs are wonderful companions. Many breeds, in addition to being affectionate, devoted members of the family, are useful working dogs and guardians. Most dogs form tight bonds with their humans, and need to be cared for like the valuable family members they are. But sadly, some owners do not live up to the responsibility and involvement it takes to properly care for a dog throughout its life. Dogs can become the victims of neglect or active abuse. Some dogs receive tender, attentive care from their owners, but no longer have a home after their owner passes away or experiences a major life event that makes him unable to keep his dog. There are many more dogs than there are homes for dogs, and dogs that are not spayed or neutered can accidentally produce large numbers of puppies, exacerbating overpopulation. For this reason, three to four million dogs, many of them perfectly healthy and wonderful animals, are euthanized in the U.S. each year. Many people get excited about owning a new dog, decide to get a puppy, and then pick one out at a pet shop or visit a breeder with a new litter. However, there are so many wonderful, friendly dogs in need of adoption, including puppies and purebreds. Some of these dogs might even be a better fit for a family than a new puppy; for instance, some adult dogs in need of adoption are already housebroken and obedience trained. Adoption is typically much less expensive than purchasing a dog. People who adopt dogs find the experience extremely rewarding, bond very closely with their dogs, and have the added satisfaction of knowing that one less animal has to be euthanized.
