Loki is a 12 month old male castrated border collie corgi who was adopted from the prison adoption program. He loves our children and is so gentle and careful with them, however he becomes very protective and aggressive around other dogs. He wants to be sure the kids are safe by herding them away from other dogs, and attacks other dogs if they even look at his kids the wrong way. He MUST be in either agility, or a farm dog with a job! There is no other way this dog will be well adjusted. He has too much energy, and is far to smart to be a normal pet. He need someone who wants to do alot with him! He is super loving, wants to climb ... (Read More)inside you to get closer to you, and just wants a person to pet him as much as possible! He needs active owners who can keep his energetic mind stimulated. He would also do best with older children in the home, ages 10 and up. He is prey driven and wants to chase birds and squirrels, so cats would not be good for him. He loves people, especially snuggling.     I have had this dog since she was 6 weeks old, she is currently about 8 years old having been born in December of '07. We have been her only owners and she is the sweetest dog with people. Very lovable, loves to snuggle and cover herself up under blankets, smiles at you when she's happy...she dislikes all other types of animals though and can't be around any. I was given the option of getting rid of her or being homeless by my landlord and with three kids I can't be homeless. Please contact me if you're interested

Rambo is an amazing dog. He is funny, caring, and loveable. But he has some behavioral issues. He needs an owner that is confident, smart, patient, and responsible. Rambo has got along with some dogs, but not all. He would have to be the only animal in the house. He can be ok with gentle kids, and adults alike...but he has trouble trusting new people and can be unpredictable. He has been ok with confident cats. He would do good with a single owner/couple that can give him much needed attention. He is smart, but he's anxious. He would benefit from a fenced in yard in which he can run around in. Please email me for more information. Thank you.

I wish I could keep Rambo forever, it breaks my heart that I haven't been able to be a better owner and that I can't keep him..I am having a child and although I feel he may be good around small children, I just can't risk his unpredictability.

Dalton Breed: Catahoula Leopard Hound Age: 1 year old +/-; Male Weight: 50 pounds Dogs: Yes Cats: Unknown Kids: 8 + Crate Trained : Yes House Trained : Yes Location: Connecticut Dalton is a energetic sweet natured 1 year old male Catahoula puppy. I know my basic commands like sit, stay, and come, I really like getting treats to motivate me. I graduated from puppy school. I'm crate trained and also will let you know when I need to go outside with a soft growl or paw to your leg. A fenced in yard would be best for me. I get along with all other dogs, but can guard my my toys and dog bed in the house. I'm also good with all people and kids ... (Read More)of all sizes. I'm not much for cuddling or being petted, but if you have an active lifestyle I'm your man. I love to go on hikes and play with frisbees and tennis balls. I sleep throughout the night accident free in my dog bed. However, I am still very much a puppy and when left alone it is best to crate me, because i like to chew! If you are interested in adopting Dalton please email sln2310@yahoo.com and request an application. Once your application has been received and reviewed, you will be contacted via email or phone by one of our volunteers. After your application is approved, the foster parent for the dog you have selected will contact you to answer any questions you may have and determine if that dog is a good match for your family. If you have no particular dog in mind, we will be happy to keep your application on file and notify you if the right dog should come into rescue. Catahoula Rescue of New England is an all-volunteer group. Dogs in our program are fostered by volunteers. The foster homes care for our dogs as if they were their own. All dogs have received vaccinations appropriate to age and are spayed or neutered. Dalton's adoption donation is $350 which includes Rabies, DHLPP, Bordetella, fecal test, heart worm test when appropriate and is on preventative, microchip, and neuter. We do not have a physical shelter, all of our dogs are fostered in individual foster homes across the New England and Canada. (Less)

PIease Read Before Adopting a Dog in Maine
Dogs can make good pets in Maine if they match your IifestyIe. Dogs have a reputation for being "man's best friend" for excellent reasons. Dogs are wonderful companions. Many breeds, in addition to being affectionate, devoted members of the family, are useful working dogs and guardians. Most dogs form tight bonds with their humans, and need to be cared for like the valuable family members they are. But sadly, some owners do not live up to the responsibility and involvement it takes to properly care for a dog throughout its life. Dogs can become the victims of neglect or active abuse. Some dogs receive tender, attentive care from their owners, but no longer have a home after their owner passes away or experiences a major life event that makes him unable to keep his dog. There are many more dogs than there are homes for dogs, and dogs that are not spayed or neutered can accidentally produce large numbers of puppies, exacerbating overpopulation. For this reason, three to four million dogs, many of them perfectly healthy and wonderful animals, are euthanized in the U.S. each year.

Many people get excited about owning a new dog, decide to get a puppy, and then pick one out at a pet shop or visit a breeder with a new litter. However, there are so many wonderful, friendly dogs in need of adoption, including puppies and purebreds. Some of these dogs might even be a better fit for a family than a new puppy; for instance, some adult dogs in need of adoption are already housebroken and obedience trained. Adoption is typically much less expensive than purchasing a dog. People who adopt dogs find the experience extremely rewarding, bond very closely with their dogs, and have the added satisfaction of knowing that one less animal has to be euthanized. If your family is ready for a canine companion, please consider adopting a dog!

All dogs, even cute little lap dogs, are ultimately descended from domesticated wolves. There are hundreds of dog breeds with extremely varied characteristics and sizes, from the tiniest teacup Chihuahua to the hugest Mastiff, but all of these breeds make up just one species Canis lupus familiaris and can theoretically breed with one another (although there can be practical and health related constraints.) The dog was the earliest domesticated animal. Dogs can hear much lower frequencies than humans, over twice as high as humans, and about four times as far as humans.
