Dexter is a well trained six year old. He gets bored very easy and is happiest when he is able to bird hunt and explore. He is gets separation anxiety if left home alone for long periods of time. He is happiest with another dog. He needs a new home due to family growing and moving. He is slightly over weight but in good health. He has a smaller ear canal in his right ear that needs to be cleaned every now and then because it is prone to ear infections. With the right home who have an understanding of the Weimeraner breed, Dexter would be an excellent fit.

Jake loves children and he lights up around them. No aggressive behaviors. Sweet sweet dog. Needs a fenced in yard - he will run. Very quiet for a hound unless there is a UPS truck around.

Rescue Me ID: 16-12-19-00220LIONEL (male)

German Shepherd    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs
Personality: High Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Please take time to read ALL information provided as it could answer some questions you may have! LIONEL was saved from Texas where dogs in the kill shelters have 3 days to be saved before they are killed. LIONEL is neutered, rabies, core vaccines, de-wormed, heart-worm and tick disease (SNAP 4DX) tested negative and micro-chipped. He has an estimated date of birth of 9 November 2015 old and at the time of rescue (December 2016) weighed around 51 pounds. LIONEL is very skinny and does need to gain a good amount of weight, which is best to be gradually over time in healthy manner. LIONEL is a young boy that has either been clearly neglected ... (Read More)of human interaction and possibly abused. When he first arrived at the rescue he really didn't know what to do or how to behave. With him being young and still growing into his body he has that goofy-clumsiness about him that just makes him all the more adorable. LIONEL is learning how to behave, but he is going to need a family with lots of love and patience to continue with his learning curve. He is enjoying getting lots of love and attention and when given a bath, although not to happy about he, he stood still and tolerated it. He has a great temperment and with the right training and guidance will make a fantastic family dog. LIONEL gets on great with other dogs of all ages and sizes, we have 8 pound terriers up to 95 pound German shepherds, from 3 mths to 10 years and he is great with all of them respecting their age and size. LIONEL loves to run in the back field and is happy playing with the other dogs or entertaining himself with toys. He is really enjoying exploring and living a happy, safe life. We do NOT have cats at the rescue so we cannot say how he will be with cats. We have dog doors in the house and LIONEL uses them to go out and play or to do his business, he wasn't at all house trained when he arrived, so it would be wise to expect the odd accident until he learns his new routine and to let you know he needs to go outside. LIONEL would benefit from an active, fun family that has the time to work with him on his obedience and manners, who would take him on adventures and road trips and let him explore the sights, sounds and smells the world has to offer. He would benefit from a family that has the time to work with him on basic and advanced obedience training. By working together both LIONEL and his humans can learn each others body language and personality, expectations and boundaries can be set and with self-training a stronger bond formed. We currently feed SPORTMIX Wholesomes Chicken Meal & Rice Formula, a 4* (a per www.dogfoodadvisor.com) GRAIN FREE food along with pro-bioitics and immune support supplements listed on the available dogs page! LIONEL is available for adoption through Give a Dog a Home, German Shepherd Dog Rescue for an adoption fee of $500. This fee is not negotiable and is used to cover the rescue costs of pulling, vetting, health certificate, transport from Texas to Maine, monthly preventatives, supplements, food and anything else that is needed. If you are interested in adopting LIONEL, please follow the link below to the adoption application and complete then submit. It generally takes 2-3 days to process applications, as long as we are able to speak to your vet and references. http://www.giveadogahome-sanantonio.org LIONEL is located at the rescue in Sebec, Maine. We post in various states along the east coast and Canada where we have had lots of successful adoptions to enable more exposure for these beautiful saved souls. Families will need to be prepared to travel to the rescue to meet and take home their new best friend. Sebec is located inbetween two small towns, Dover-Foxcroft and Milo, both approximately 6 miles away and the closest major city is Bangor (approx 45 miles). Many families travel and make a mini-vacation out of the trip and stay in beautiful Maine for the weekend, however, if this is not possible and there are options to arrange transport, we will work with you to make it happen. Rescue Me ID: 16-12-19-00211ISABELLA (female)

Pit Bull Mix    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs
Personality: High Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

PLEASE ENSURE YOU READ ALL THE INFORMATION PROVIDED TO LEARN ALL ABOUT GRACIE, HER LOCATION AND ADOPTION OPTIONS. ISABELLA was saved from Texas where dogs in the kill shelters have 3 days to be saved before they are killed. GRACIE is spayed, rabies, core vaccines, de-wormed, heart-worm and tick disease (SNAP 4DX) tested negative and micro-chipped. She has an estimated date of birth of 11 June 2016 and at the time of rescue (December 2016) weighs around 26 pounds. We are looking for a family that understands the misconception of the pit-bull breed, a family that lives in a welcoming environment and if they ever had to move would only ever ... (Read More)move to where she was welcome as part of the family also. We also are looking for a family familiar with the breed and their characteristics and mannersims to be sure that she gets the perfect family this time round. ISABELLA was malnourished and had demodex mange and skin infections at the time of rescue, however, she has been on treatment and has made excellent progress, with almost all of her hair grown back in, the mange and infections treated and she has been gaining weight and will continue to improve as she grows. She is a lovely grey colour and such a happy, loving, affectionate girl. She does get very excited and jumps up, so she will need a family with patience to continue to work with her and teach her manners. ISABELLA has become so happy and excited since being here, she runs and plays with the other dogs as she knows she is now safe, healthy and has lots of dogs to play with. She currently lives with all size dogs ranging from 6 pound chi's to 95 pound German Shepherds and gets on great with them all. We do NOT have cats at the rescue so cannot comment on how he would be with them. We have dog doors in the house and ISABELLA uses them to go out and play or to do her business, however, I do also have pee pads for the pups and smaller dogs and she does sometimes ues them, so it would be wise to expect the odd accident until she learns her new routine and to let you know she needs to go outside. Rescue Me ID: 16-12-09-00381SCOTTY (male)

Fox Terrier Mix    Age: Young Adult

Personality: High Energy
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

'Please take time to read ALL information provided as it could answer some questions you may have! SCOTTY was saved from Texas where dogs in the kill shelters have 3 days to be saved before they are killed. SCOTTY is neutered, rabies, core vaccines, de-wormed, heart-worm and tick disease (SNAP 4DX) tested negative and micro-chipped. He has an estimated date of birth of 5 December 2014 old and at the time of rescue (December 2016) weighed around 23 pounds. When SCOTTY first arrived at the rescue he was very nippy, if you went to stroke him, he would try and nip, he would nip your leg when walking past. This wasn't done in a mean way, to ... (Read More)bite or hurt anyone, he just didn't know any better and was how he acted when he was excited. We have been working with SCOTTY on this and he has made outstanding improvement and rarely does it now, however, it is something that his new family should be aware of and correct him immediately if he starts to do it again. SCOTTY is a really happy, playful, fun and loving boy. I do not know anything about his past, but it seems that he is truly enjoying having other dogs to play with, bones to chew on, toys to play with, balls to chase and roll around and his friends to cuddle up to when sleeping. He is a great boy, who just needed some direction and understanding. He is a wonderful size for a family dog and would give many happy times to any family with his fun, loving personality. We have dog doors in the house and SCOTTY uses them to go out and play or to do his business, however it would be wise to expect the odd accident until he learns his new routine and to let you know he needs to go outside. SCOTTY would benefit from an active, fun family that has the time to work with him on his obedience and manners, who would take him on adventures and road trips and let him explore the sights, sounds and smells the world has to offer. He would benefit from a family that has the time to work with him on basic and advanced obedience training. By working together both SCOTTY and his humans can learn each others body language and personality, expectations and boundaries can be set and with self-training a stronger bond formed. We currently feed SPORTMIX Wholesomes Chicken Meal & Rice Formula, a 4* (a per www.dogfoodadvisor.com) GRAIN FREE food along with pro-bioitics and immune support supplements listed on the available dogs page! SCOTTY is available for adoption through Give a Dog a Home, German Shepherd Dog Rescue for an adoption fee of $500. This fee is not negotiable and is used to cover the rescue costs of pulling, vetting, health certificate, transport from Texas to Maine, monthly preventatives, supplements, food and anything else that is needed. If you are interested in adopting SCOTTY , please follow the link below to the adoption application and complete then submit. It generally takes 2-3 days to process applications, as long as we are able to speak to your vet and references. http://www.giveadogahome-sanantonio.org SCOTTY is located at the rescue in Sebec, Maine. She has the wire-hair to minimal shedding and as long as regular brushing, low maintenance grooming. We do NOT ... (Read More)have cats at the rescue so cannot comment on how she would behave around cats. BENNY is a sweet affectionate boy who loves to be close by. He gets on great with other dogs and lives happily with small dogs weighing 10 pounds up to large dogs weighing 95 pounds, all ages and personalities and he has no problems with any of them.     PLEASE ENSURE YOU READ ALL THE INFORMATION PROVIDED TO LEARN ALL ABOUT RILEY, HER LOCATION AND ADOPTION OPTIONS. RILEY originally came from a high kill shelter in Texas where dogs generally have just 3 days to be saved before they are killed due to the thousands of stray dogs that sadly are in desperate need of life of the streets and ultimately a home of their own. RILEY was saved be a lady that adopted a GSD from GaDaH two years ago as she couldn't bare to see her killed and so she reached out ot GaDaH to take her into rescue and find her perfect forever home. RILEY is spayed, rabies, core vaccines, heart-worm & tick disease tested ... (Read More)negative (4dx), de-wormed and micro-chipped. She has an estimated date of birth of 29th November 2012 and at the time of rescue December 2016, weighed approximately 63 pounds.%BD'%BD%BD She is a smaller sized girl, in height, but does need to lose some weight. The extra weight will not be too much of a big deal for the east coast winter, however, for her health and well-being she will need to lose weight in the spring/summer. RILEY spent a few days with her foster family in Texas whilst waiting for transport up to the rescue in Sebec, Maine. She was a little grumpy with two of the smaller dogs there. Since being at the rescue she has been great with all of the other dogs. She doesn't like to be jumped on, but who does, so she will growl and let the other dogs know she does not like this. Growling is dogs way of communicating and is not a bad thing. RILEY also likes to be left alone when eating and so if other pets are in the home, feeding her seperately or being monitored is highly recommended. We do not have cats in the rescue so cannot comment on how she would behave around them. RILEY walks well on the leash and loves to ride in the car. Rescue Me ID: 16-11-27-00342KOLA (male)

German Shepherd    Age: Puppy

Personality: High Energy
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

KOLA was found as a stray by one of our foster families in Texas. He had no micro-chip and no one responded to the found dog posters that were distributed where he was found, nor the lost/found sites. KOLA had something wrong with his right eye so he was taken to the vets for examination. Here it was determined that he had entropion, where the eye lids are too big and eye drops and steroids were prescribed. A week later KOLA had his neuter appointment and not made much improvement with his eye and so I asked the vet to look whilst he was under anesthesia. This vet thought that he most likely had ulcers and stopped the steroid treatment and ... (Read More)prescribed anti-biotics, but also recommended he see an eye specialist. He was scheduled in at the Veterinary Eye Specialist in Texas and it was determined that he has severe dry eye. Unfortunately this is a condition that will not heal itself and even with the treatment that he is currently on, will most likely need some kind of eye therapy (drops) for the rest of his life and monitoring with changes in environment, weather and such. He is currently being given eye medication and is back on a stronger steroid. Dr. Pierson, the eye specialist wants to have him on that for 3-4 weeks and then he will need re-assessing. If all is good and his eye stops producing the mucas and he is opening his eye and not in more pain then that treatment wil continue, but will be adjusted as more of a maintenance. Should this not work there are two options - surgery to try and fix it, or amputation of the eye, which still could be needed if the surgery doesn't work. The specialist report is attached in the photo album on the website for more detailed information. So - KOLA is looking for that special family that has the time to give him his eye drops 2-3 times a day, or as when indicated by the vet. Be able to monitor his eye and take him for check ups and assessments as and when needed and ultimately if the treatment doesn't work, get him the surgery he will need to be pain free, if that is the correction surgery or the removal of the eye that would be something you would discuss with your vet. The correction surgery is not always recommended depening on individual cases. KOLAs diagnosis is basically wait and see what happens, there is no way to predict how he will respond completely, and if surgery will be an option or not, so we will be looking for a family that has the capabilty and time to provide after-care should surgery be needed. KOLA's foster mum has said that his eye is producing less mucas, which is positive but it is still early days having had his specialist appointment on 6th December 2016. KOLA is young and dogs adapt to whatever is thrown in their way and whatever the outcome KOLA is safe, alive and will hopefully soon be healed and pain free. KOLA is a young, handsome boy, who is great with other dogs, all humans he has met and is generally a loving affectionate boy. He walks great on the leash, is responsive to comands and loves to cuddle and have his belly rubbed and his ears scratched. KOLA is neuetered, rabies, core vaccines, de-wormed, heart-worm and tick disease tested and micro-chipped. He has an estimated date of birth of 22 November 2015 and in December 2016 weighed around 45 pounds. Despite the issue with his eye, KOLA is happy, healthy and ready for his new family. He would benefit from an active family that likes to go on road trips and take him to new places where he can explore the sights, smells and sounds the world has to offer. KOLA will need training and we recommend that the family has the time and patience to work with him on basic and advanced obedience. Working together as a family to train him, will not only help with forming a bond, but will allow both KOLA and humans to learn each others body language, personalites, boundaries and expectations. KOLA is available for adoption through Give a Dog a Home, German Shepherd Dog Rescue for an adoption fee of $500. This cost is non-negotiable and is used to cover the cost of vetting, health certificates and the expense of looking after all of our rescue dogs. KOLA is currently located in Texas with his foster family. Transport is available to the east coast, transport costs vary from $150 - $200 and would be the responsibility of the new family. All pre-transport veterinary examinations and health certificate costs will be met by the rescue. If you have the time, patience and heart to want to give this handsome boy a home, please follow the link below to the Adoption Application and complete then submit. It generally takes 2-3 days to process applications as long as we have been able to contact your references and veterinarian. %BD'%BD%BDhttp://www.giveadogahome-sanantonio.org/adoption-application.html (Less)

We were hoping she would get along with the family dogs and kids pretty smoothly. She loves all the adults and most kids but still cant hang with the many dogs up here. She also has been stuck in a cold basement on a daily basis because of this. I have had her ever since someone tied her to our porch. Rescue Me ID: 16-10-27-00256TOBI (male)

Doberman Pinscher Mix    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: High Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

PLEASE ENSURE YOU READ ALL THE INFORMATION PROVIDED TO LEARN ALL ABOUT TOBI, HIS LOCATION AND ADOPTION OPTIONS. TOBI is neutered, rabies, core vaccines, de-wormed, heart-worm and tick disease tested negative and micro-chipped. He has an estimated date of birth of 15 October 2015 and as of October 2016 weighed approximately 41 pounds. TOBI originally came from a high kill shelter in Texas where dogs generally have just 3 days to be saved before they are killed due to the thousands of stray dogs that sadly are in desperate need of life of the streets and ultimately a home of their own. TOBI is a complete love bug, who is a high energy, ... (Read More)happy, fun loving boy. He does get excitable and jump up a little, which is very common with dogs we save from the kill shelters, but with some guidance and training he will soon learn how to behave in a nice manner. TOBI does walk on the leash, but does pull a little, but nothing that a little bit of guidance and practice won't solve. With TOBI being around a year old, we do not think he will grow much more, so is a nice medium 40-50 pound dog. TOBI is great with other dogs, he is playful and loves to chase and wrestle with the other dogs and is quite happy chewing on a deer antler or hoof. TOBI lives amongst dogs of all sizes and ages, ranging from 6 pound chi mixes to 95 pound German Shepherds and has adapted great with all of them. We do NOT have cats at the rescue so we cannot comment on how he would be around them. TOBI would love an active family that will take him on road trips and adventures to let him explore the sights, sounds and smells the world has to offer. He would benefit from a family that has the time to work with him on his basic and advanced obedience training. By working together both TOBI and his humans can learn each others body language and personality. Expectations and boundaries can be set and with self-training a stronger bond formed. TOBI is very smart and responsive and training would be relatively easy and fun. We currently feed SPORTMIX Wholesomes Chicken Meal & Rice Formula, a 4* (a per www.dogfoodadvisor.com) GRAIN FREE food along with pro-bioitics and immune support supplements listed on the available dogs page! TOBI is available for adoption through Give a Dog a Home, German Shepherd Dog Rescue for an adoption fee of $500. This fee is not negotiable and is used to cover the rescue costs of pulling, vetting, health certificate, transport from Texas to Maine, monthly preventatives, supplements, food and anything else that is needed. If you feel that you have the heart and home to give this handsome boy a wonderful life, please go to our website, under the APPLICATION tab, complete, then submit the APPLICATION. Our process takes around 2-4 days, and ensuring your references are aware that we will be calling, could speed up the process. Once you have been approved, we discuss any questions in regards to the dog you are wanting to adopt, then you complete and submit the contract, make payment and then we can work out the pick up / transport arrangements. Please do NOT submit an application if you are not looking to take home a new best friend within the next few weeks. http://www.giveadogahome-sanantonio.org/application.html TOBI is located at the rescue in Sebec, Maine. We post in various states along the east coast and Canada where we have had lots of successful adoptions to enable more exposure for these beautiful saved souls. Families will need to be prepared to travel to the rescue to meet and take home their new best friend. There is a local lodge in Sebec, a few hotels in Dover-Foxcroft (approx 6 miles) and several in Bangor (approx 45 miles). There are also lots of wonderful camp-sites for the more adventurous families and what a great way to get to know your new best friend. If there are options for transport, we will work with you for the most convenient option. (Less)

German Shepherd    Age: Young Adult

Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

2 years ago I adopted a Female German Shephard that was rescued from a high Kill shelter in Georgia. She has been very wonderful with all people and kids except for the fact that we still haven't been able to break her of the habit of jumping. Friday we had an incident that we feel we need to find a rescue/rehab for my dog whom I have loved and has protected my family. Friday a small 10 pound dog lightly nipped at Princess. Princess (my German Shephard) was on leash with my husband. Princess lunged at the dog; my husband was able to pull her back keeping the small dog out of harm's way. Princess then lunged with all her strength and my ... (Read More)husband could not keep her back. I watched in horror as I could see my dog decisively chose hind quarters to entrap in her jaws and then picked up and shook the small dog until its intestines were visible. It took minutes of yelling and trying to pry her jaws open and punching her until she finally stopped. The bottom line is that we could not control her. We consulted with the veterinarian whom said she would not euthanize 'yet'. Her opinion was that unless the bond has been broken we should continue with her as we have and if 'something else' happens we should definitely consider putting her down at that point. Her other suggestion was a rescue or rehab if we feel we can't continue ownership. We live in a community with a lot of kids and a lot of dogs. Daily several runners run by with their dogs - Princess always kind of 'freaked out' as people and dogs went by; we always thought she was being protective, but now we are not so sure. We have a 1 year old grandson and have not allowed the dog to be around him. My husband is jumpy putting his hands near her neck to hook her up. I don't trust her; she would not obey and we could not control her. Is there a soul that has no other animals that has time and energy to put into a very loving dog that we feel we can no longer keep? Do you have any advice for us? Is there anyone we can call? Thank you. Laura and Tod Jarvis Kennebunk, ME (Less)

PIease Read Before Adopting a Dog in Maine
Dogs can make good pets in Maine if they match your IifestyIe. Dogs have a reputation for being "man's best friend" for excellent reasons. Dogs are wonderful companions. Many breeds, in addition to being affectionate, devoted members of the family, are useful working dogs and guardians. Most dogs form tight bonds with their humans, and need to be cared for like the valuable family members they are. But sadly, some owners do not live up to the responsibility and involvement it takes to properly care for a dog throughout its life. Dogs can become the victims of neglect or active abuse. Some dogs receive tender, attentive care from their owners, but no longer have a home after their owner passes away or experiences a major life event that makes him unable to keep his dog. There are many more dogs than there are homes for dogs, and dogs that are not spayed or neutered can accidentally produce large numbers of puppies, exacerbating overpopulation. For this reason, three to four million dogs, many of them perfectly healthy and wonderful animals, are euthanized in the U.S. each year.

Many people get excited about owning a new dog, decide to get a puppy, and then pick one out at a pet shop or visit a breeder with a new litter. However, there are so many wonderful, friendly dogs in need of adoption, including puppies and purebreds. Some of these dogs might even be a better fit for a family than a new puppy; for instance, some adult dogs in need of adoption are already housebroken and obedience trained. Adoption is typically much less expensive than purchasing a dog. People who adopt dogs find the experience extremely rewarding, bond very closely with their dogs, and have the added satisfaction of knowing that one less animal has to be euthanized. If your family is ready for a canine companion, please consider adopting a dog!
