Lucy is a border collie approx age 7 with hip displaysia. Her family has relegated her to living outdoors. I'm the neighbor and she has been living with me for almost a month after I found out she had been locked in a basement for 3 days after her owner got arrested. The owner is home bit elected to just forget about her. She loves kids and loves to play ball. She snaps at cats buthasn't actuallyhurt any. She has been fine with chickens and other dogs. She is a love and really needs an owner to work with and love her. I don't think she was physically abused but definitely neglected and yelled at a lot.

Boxer Mix    Age: Puppy

Personality: Average Energy, Very Submissive
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

This boy is Moe. He and his two brothers were found in a dumpster in rural Burke County, Georgia. Some amazing citizens are doing all they can to change things there, but its a slow process, and sadly, at this point, many dogs are often abandoned in and around local dumpsters. Tragic! Thankfully, Moe and his two siblings were among the lucky, who were discovered when local dog rescuers checked the dumpsters. Moe is about six months old now, and is in Maine and ready to meet his new family anytime. He is neutered, up to date on all his shots, and weighs around 35lbs. We do not think he will get much bigger. Moe is fostered with another ... (Read More)Underhound, and loves his foster sister very much. He is a little shy with new humans, but once he warms up, he is a true, loving, loyal friend to the end. Moe would love a home with another confident dog friend to help him feel safe. We think he would be a good dog friend in return. :) He is a very good boy in his foster home, and he loves to snuggle on the couch with his foster sister. We are truly not sure on Moe's breed, but we do know he is super handsome, with a gorgeous brindle coat. We also know that Moe badly deserve a second chance at a kind future, after his hard start in this life. Border Collie Mix    Age: Young Puppy

Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

This 6 month old border collie mix little girl had a tragic beginning in life, and we are so hoping that one of you reading this will be the one to help turn it around. Carlie was found in GA, at a dumpster with a broken jaw and broken front leg. She was also starving, since she couldn't scavenge for food with a broken jaw, or defend herself against other stray dogs living around the dumpster. Believe it or not, abandoning dogs at the dump is not rare in Burke County, GA. Underhound is working with amazing people there, who are fighting for change, and in the meantime, we do our best to help take in some of the more terrible cases, like ... (Read More)sweet little Carlie. One of the photos of her above, is shortly after her rescue. Thankfully, she has now fully recovered, aside from the fact she has a few permanently crooked teeth, from the broken jaw, and will always have a little knot in her leg that was broken. Other than that, she is happy and able to play like any other pup! Carlie is now in Connecticut, and doing very well at her foster mom's house. She is a delightful, healthy, loveable girl, who just needs the right person to come along now and decide to give her the second chance she so deserves at a good life. Carlie is a little protective of her food (can you blame her?) - something her experienced foster mom is helping her overcome, but for now, we are seeking adopters with no children under 10 years old, so that she is not accidentally set up for failure, while working on overcoming this issue. To apply to adopt Carlie, please email underhoundrenee@underhoundrailroad.org, or visit our website to fill out an application at www.underhoundrailroad.org/adoption. Thank you! (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 15-08-09-00192Bardsley - IL (male)

Catahoula Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Not Good w/ Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Bardsley - Foster Needed / Adoption Available Breed: Catahoula Leopard Hound mix Age: 3 years +/-; Neutered Male Medical: Up to Date on Vaccinations, Microchipped, Heartworm Negative, wormed Weight: 65 pounds Dogs: Yes Cats: No Kids: 12 + Crate Trained : Yes House Trained : Yes Location: Illinois Bardsley is a 3 year old male Catahoula mix, with gorgeous merle markings. He is very obedient and well-behaved, and was even at the top of his class in obedience school. He does very well in public places (vet, pet store, parks, waiting outside stores). He gets along great with other dogs and would fit right in to a multi-dog household. He also ... (Read More)has a good recall and does well off-leash at dog parks and natural areas with lots of land (unless he sees a squirrel or deer, which he chases but always comes back). He walks well on a leash. He loves hiking and swimming and going for runs. He also enjoys doing nose-work around the house, and if trained properly, he would make a great hunting companion. He's calm and non-destructive in the house and knows all the basic commands (sit, stay, place, lay down, come, wait, take, drop/leave it), and even does well with baths, nail trims, and teeth brushing. He is up-to-date on all his vaccinations, is neutered, and weighs ~65 lbs. He is nervous around men at first, but warms up to them. He is especially comfortable around men if they have another dog with them. He loves to run and explore and would do best in a home with a yard or land to run. He has a strong prey drive, so a home with no small children or cats would be more suitable for him. Bardsley is in need of a new home or foster asap. Although his current owner thinks he is an amazing dog and the best companion, Bardsley hasn't adjusted well to moving to a small 1 bdrm apartment in the city. The hustle and bustle of the urban city environment has been very stressful to him and his owner, resulting in him becoming very protective of her and territorial within their living area, and he has acted aggressively towards people within and around the apartment building (his owner is now required to rehome him, since she is not able to rehome herself anytime soon). But when Bardsley is away from his territory, he no longer displays this threatening demeanor. Bardsley would love to have a new home free of blaring sirens, people shouting, and the constant noise of traffic. If you are interested in adopting/fostering Bardsley please email sln2310@yahoo.com and request an application. Once your application has been received and reviewed, you will be contacted via email or phone by one of our volunteers. After your application is approved, the foster parent for the dog you have selected will contact you to answer any questions you may have and determine if that dog is a good match for your family. If you have no particular dog in mind, we will be happy to keep your application on file and notify you if the right dog should come into rescue. Catahoula Rescue of New England is an all-volunteer group. Dogs in our program are fostered by volunteers. The foster homes care for our dogs as if they were their own. All dogs have received vaccinations appropriate to age and are spayed or neutered. Bardsley's adoption donation includes Rabies, DHLPP, Bordetella, fecal test, heart worm test when appropriate and is on preventative, microchip, and neuter. We do not have a physical shelter, all of our dogs are fostered in individual foster homes across the New England and Canada. (Less)

Catahoula    Age: Adult

Roux Breed: Catahoula Leopard Dog Age: 6 year +/- Dogs: yes Cats: Unknown Kids: 10 + Crate Trained : Yes House Trained : Yes Location: Ohio Special Needs: Right Eye: Totally Blind; Left Eye: Cataracts; Both eyes needs care and will discuss open phone interview My name is Roux and even though I look like a big goof and I'm 6 years old, I really act like a puppy! I am a pure bred male Catahoula Leopard dog and I have a fabulous foster home that I share with two human brothers, ages 11 and 13; two fur brothers and one fur sister. My fur brothers play a lot, but I'm not as interested in playing with them as much and really prefer my ... (Read More)humans. I really prefer to spend more time around them and would be happy being an only dog even. Other dogs that aren't too pushy are ok, though! My human brothers are really nice to me and understand when I need space and like to be left alone and when it's ok to love on me. My foster mom and dad watch though, just in case they don't understand. I'm not sure I would like any younger children that don't understand boundaries. I love to cuddle, and when I say cuddle, I mean I want to be so close that I am one with you. But move slow and pay attention to my feelings when you want to show me affection, sometimes I'm not quite sure what your intentions are, so I might jump or growl and it scares us both. It may be because I might have a slight problem with my eye sight, but we are getting that looking into to find out for sure. Massages are the bomb though. I will let you massage me until the cows come home. It helps relax and calm me down too, which is nice when I get over excited. I do well in my kennel if you have to be go somewhere, but definitely prefer running with my peeps when they are home and at night. I love foods of all kinds, mine AND yours, all the time, so you might want to watch that sandwich on the counter. I love to explore EVERYTHING because there is just so much to see. You should definitely be right there exploring with me! I love toys, but those rope toys are no match for me. I like the durable treat filled Kongs best because they seem to last longer and I get a treat for all my hard work! You and I can be exercises buddies too because I love to walk and run. Sometimes I get a little too excited and want to go faster than everyone else. My foster family is trying to show me how to stop and smell the roses, but I still forget, so we are a work in progress. I need you to use a padded harness though when we are out, at least until I get to where I want to just take leisurely strolls, because my skin is soft and very sensitive. I know my basic commands, like sit, no, and stay, but sometimes it's hard to listen if there are other things going on, so we are working on that too. If you want me to come live with you, we might want tall fences because I have shown my family how I can jump up on things, like my kennel and the kitchen table (but I don't do that anymore!), so I know I can jump high. While I love my foster family, I am looking for a home where I can go everywhere and do everything and see the world with you.     Handsome, just turned 5 year old dog in need of a loving home where there are no children or other dogs. We have had him since he was 4 months old and love him very much, but we are expecting child number 5 and can no longer keep him in a situation that makes his quality of life very stressful and puts the kids in danger of being bitten. Rescue Me ID: 14-10-09-00637Gravity (male)

Bull Terrier Mix    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Very High Energy, Somewhat Dominant
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

It is with a heavy heart that I write this tonight. I have had Gravity since he was 10 weeks old. He was purchased from a breeder. He is a rotty-pitty mix with beautiful markings! While I am a true dog lover (exsp. of the bully breed) I am making this profile because I know a new forever home is in Gravity's best interest. First I will explain why I am looking to place him. I have a couch potato five year old male pitty who thinks he is a human. He gets irritated with Gravity's play-fullness and hyper nature. Gravity is dominate over him but it has never escaled into a fight of any sort. I also have a three year old who gravity has for the ... (Read More)most part been wonderful with! However, one of his biggest issues is 'jumping'! He is always so happy and ready to go that he has a habit of knocking the little one over. He also like to jump up onto adults to greet them. Gravity WILL require firm training! He needs someone who is able to give him the time he DESERVES! He LOVES to run, play, etc. I could see him being a dog that goes on hikes, to the dog park, etc. But unfortunately, with my current plate load of schooling, work, and a toddler I have been unable to meet his exercise and physical needs. Gravity is a goofy boy looking for love. He loves to cuddle in your bed at night and often follows people around as if he doesn't want to be alone. He needs time outs when he gets to rough during play time. He is a nipper. Not ever in an aggressive manner but very much so in an overactive under trained way. I have had no experience in training a strong willed male dominate hyper dog and feel he needs to be placed with someone who can give him the opportunity to be all that he can. He is a very large boy. For 15 months old he is already bigger than my five year old pit. Because of his size I hope that someone will be able to give him the training needed to stop nipping/jumping before he gets bigger! He is a couch potato after he gets his energy out. He doesn't enjoy car rides and has a tendency to get sick (although he recently had a successful 40 min car ride and seemed to have a great time). He loves to chew as he is still teething and is very much so in love with bones from the butcher shop. He has been fed table scraps and is good at accepting treats easily. He loves to give kisses but still needs work in order to walk effectively on a leash. He has never been exposed to cats or other small animals. He used to be let free in our yard and stayed in the vacinity and came when hollered to. The last couple months and due to a new home he has been utilizing a dog crate while inside (for time outs), a play yard out back, and house time when he is being well behaved. He loves dog toys and squeekies. He is neutered and only lacking one or two vaccinations that I am willing to get done prior to placement. I am hoping to find him a home where his new mommy/and or daddy will be comfortable keeping occasional contact and or sending pics. I wish with all my heart I could keep my big goofy boy. But because I love him so it is now my mission to find him the best situation/setting/opportunity to live out his life. I would like to set up a meeting or two and would like to make it known ahead of time that if someone takes Gravity and for any reason it is not working out I would like to take him back. I would also extend the opportunity in the future that if he ever needed to be watched for vacation or what have you that Gravity will always have a place with us. I look forward to hearing from prospective new homes. I am open to answering any questions. I will have more pics of him per request. The current pic is recent (the last couple of weeks). He NEEDS to be included in family life and is looking for a true dog loving companion! (Less)

Zeke's story is a different kind of tale. He was adopted out as a puppy. It seemed to be the perfect fit. He seemed happy and looked happy. A year later he was seen at an adoption event with both his owner and new boyfriend and Zeke looked quite different - afraid and defeated. A volunteer immediately took him back. The owner stated he spent a lot of time in a back room, it soon became clear that Zeke was extremely fearful toward's males. The purpose of rescue work is to protect and save animals. Seeing Zeke come back to the rescue worse than he came in, really broke the hearts of those who tried hard to find the perfect home for him. Seeing the rest of his litter do so well in their new homes makes the heart break even worse. Since he has returned to rescue he has received a ton of love and guidance every day and has made leaps and bounds towards recovery. Zeke has put on some much needed weight and has come back out of his shell in his foster home. He loves to play and runs with his foster sisters and also plays well with his foster parents. PIease Read Before Adopting a Dog in Maine
Dogs can make good pets in Maine if they match your IifestyIe. Dogs have a reputation for being "man's best friend" for excellent reasons. Dogs are wonderful companions. Many breeds, in addition to being affectionate, devoted members of the family, are useful working dogs and guardians. Most dogs form tight bonds with their humans, and need to be cared for like the valuable family members they are. But sadly, some owners do not live up to the responsibility and involvement it takes to properly care for a dog throughout its life. Dogs can become the victims of neglect or active abuse. Some dogs receive tender, attentive care from their owners, but no longer have a home after their owner passes away or experiences a major life event that makes him unable to keep his dog. There are many more dogs than there are homes for dogs, and dogs that are not spayed or neutered can accidentally produce large numbers of puppies, exacerbating overpopulation. For this reason, three to four million dogs, many of them perfectly healthy and wonderful animals, are euthanized in the U.S. each year.

Many people get excited about owning a new dog, decide to get a puppy, and then pick one out at a pet shop or visit a breeder with a new litter. However, there are so many wonderful, friendly dogs in need of adoption, including puppies and purebreds. Some of these dogs might even be a better fit for a family than a new puppy; for instance, some adult dogs in need of adoption are already housebroken and obedience trained. Adoption is typically much less expensive than purchasing a dog. People who adopt dogs find the experience extremely rewarding, bond very closely with their dogs, and have the added satisfaction of knowing that one less animal has to be euthanized. If your family is ready for a canine companion, please consider adopting a dog!
