Rescue Me ID: 16-07-29-00289Momma (female)

Pit Bull Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Cats, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Needs to be Spayed, Needs Vaccinations, Abused/Neglected

I am looking for help for 2 female dogs I have come to know. I received a call last week from my sister who said she had a friend reach out to her about the living conditions of 2 dogs staying in the house she was familiar with. The owner had abandoned these ladies and the people left there had just been served eviction notice and were not interested in bringing them with them. These people are active drug users and were comfortable with putting dogs in garbage bags and tossing out moving car or over bridge. She had convinced them to wait 24 hours before doing so and called everyone she knew. My sister was one of those people and she called ... (Read More)me frantic for advice or help. I immediately got ahold of these people and told them I would come get them. With no plan I got in my car from Burnsville and drove 5 hours to Iowa City to these dogs. When I walked in the house I was overwhelmed at the dirt, the garbage and the oblivious signs of drug using. They had put these 2 beautiful dogs in a small closet with no food or water. The moment I opened the door they wagged their tails and were so excited to see me. They hopped in my car and we drove off with some vague information about them. Mom 5 used to breed pups that were taken away always immed. and never told what for. Daughter 2 used as well once for breeding pups. Both intact, no vaccines. Owner walked out with male dog a couple months ago never leaving any info on what to do with the girls just that he didn't care and wasn't coming back for them. Girls have always been together, and are currently in heat. The entire drive home I called anyone I ever knew trying to find help. I was able to find temp housing for them together. They spent the car ride licking and loving on each other but at the house of my coworker who took them in they growled at each other a couple times and I thought it would be best to separate them in case. I don't know if it is the heat hormones or the trauma of what they've been through. I am working with Jill from Pause from Paws trying desperately to find them fosters and have yet to do so. They are gentle, loving and quite chill. No training so walking them on a leash requires some strength and they def need to be spayed and get some training. Do you know or are you able to provide any help for them? Good with cats, not sure of their background so I haven't brought around other dogs, good with older children but I've never brought them around younger kids. I would totally take them but I live in a townhouse that bans their breed. I have reached out to all pit rescues here in MN and am not getting a lot of help or they are full. Thanks and God bless, Tara (Less)

Sheba is a lovely shepherd mix dog, estimated to be about 6 years old. She was found abandoned in an apartment by the landlord after her family moved away a couple of weeks previously. Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Juno is a loving girl. She loves spending time with people. She's my girl. But our move to the country has been delayed, and the city is too much for her; getting out of fence(I built, so makes sense), chasing rabbits and such. She's been overall good, but has had some issues around the water dish with other dogs. She's been a little snotty at times when other dogs are around food that she thinks is hers, which is most food. But loves being with her pack(my wife and I). But wants to get out sometimes if not run(although we run her daily- I think the rabbit situation where we live is too much for her). Doesn't chew things, but willl find food ... (Read More)if left out. All she wants is to know you are near. But if there's a rabbit...I love this dog, but fear she may need a more secure yard sooner than I can deliver. (Less)

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Very High Energy, Very Dominant
Health: Needs to be Neutered, Vaccinations Current, Abused/Neglected,
 Aggressive

Watson was rehomed to us. The owner was a young female that found this male dog to be to much to handle. He had been abused by her roommate while in the kennel. He has been through obedience classes and done well. He is very good at catching Frisbees in mid air and returning. Knows sit, down, shake, sit pretty, drop and others. When we took him in he would not enter the kennel with out a fight, growling and snapping. He will now enter the kennel and lay down so that the kennel door can be closed. He also feared sticks, broom handles, but this has also disappeared. He loves to cuddle and become part of the family after he ... (Read More)has gained your trust. I do have one concern, that I have not been able to work with him on ~ if someone NEW enters through a door. He will nip at there hands and/or bit them. We have not had time to work with this behavior and we always have him kennel when someone enters the house. My husband and I love him and would be willing to keep him, but I work with Service Dogs for Autistic Children and I do not have the right environment to keep him. (Less)

Animal ID: 1636Gypsy (female)

Rat Terrier Mix    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Gypsy is a sweet but timid little rat terrier mix who is estimated to be about 7 years old. She was finally captured as a stray after being on the run for almost a month. Sadly, she was wearing a collar all along so she had a home, but no one claimed her. Once she was surrendered to our humane society it was discovered she was quite a nice little girl, just scared. She adapted beautifully in her new foster home almost immediately. Gypsy will definitely need a family who will keep her on a leash when outdoors or who has a fenced yard or nearby dog park to keep her safe. She is housebroken and will only be adopted as an indoor companion ... (Read More)dog. Gypsy tested positive for Lyme disease and is currently being treated for it. Chihuahua Mix    Age: Adult

Personality: Average Energy, Somewhat Dominant
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Cuddly 6 1/2 year old Chihuahua/Papillon Mix. Chloe is a sweet girl but very protective of her 'person'. She would do best in a home with an adult female. We have children aged 10 and 12 and she is fine with them but smaller children and friends may get nipped. She has been known to run after people she feels are a threat and nip at their heels. Chloe needs a controlled environment as she is inconsistent in her potty habits. With a controlled environment and consistent training, I believe she is potty-pad trainable. We have been unable to provide the consistency due to children and another dog in the house. She is also afraid of our ... (Read More)other dog. Chloe will keep you warm at night as she loves to sleep under the covers with her person. She is very affectionate and will bond best with an adult female. She loves to go for car rides, tummy scratches, cuddling, and running in circles in the yard. She does not like to walk on a leash but she'll follow along if it's a short walk. I hope to find Chloe a loving home since she is a very sweet lady and has lots of love to give. (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 16-06-11-00177Rocky (male)

Rottweiler Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Not Good w/ Other Dogs, Not Good w/ Cats, Good w/ Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Average Energy, Submissive
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current, Aggressive, Fearful/Anxious

Rocky is 5 years old and 83 lbs. He absolutely loves his people. He seeks out touch and will ask you to pet him by putting his head in your lap, or nuzzling your hand. After he knows you well, he likes to give kisses! He is housetrained, and never destroys your belongings. He walks well on a leash, unless he sees another dog (then he will pull all the way home). He has a history of aggression with other dogs, and needs to be the only pet in the house. He also has a very high prey drive towards cats, and shouldn't be allowed to interact with small children. More about his aggression: Rocky is very anxious about other dogs; this is what ... (Read More)drives his aggression towards them. Someone who has experience with reactive dogs, or is willing to learn about reactivity, would be an ideal owner for Rocky. I have taken him to two six-week sessions of 'reactive rehab' dog training classes using clicker training and positive reinforcement, and he has improved greatly. Whereas he used to sprint towards the window and bark like crazy if there was another dog outside, he now is much more calm and doesn't feel the need to guard the windows like he used to. A nightly 8-minute 'relaxation protocol' has made him a much calmer dog as well. If other dogs are nowhere to be found, Rocky is a very laid-back guy. He loves following you from room to room so he can lie down by your feet. He doesn't care about fetch at all, but loves his flirt pole, and likes to play chase. He loves going on a walk or a run with you. 'Outside' is probably his favorite word. Medical notes: Rocky hates getting his nails clipped and needs to wear a muzzle when getting a trim. Most of his front teeth are broken and will need attention sooner than later. If he is on lower quality kibble, he becomes prone to dandruff and ear infections. He is fixed, heartworm-free, and up-to-date on his vaccinations. Good manners: Rocky will NOT break into your garbage, chew up your things, bark at you (he prefers to make a yawning noise if he wants to talk to you), dig up your yard, steal your food, or jump up on guests! He knows sit, lay down, leave it, and come. He will be an amazing, loving pet for someone who wants to spoil him with attention and belly rubs. (Less)

This animal is available to licensed rescue groups only.  Please do not enquire unless with a licensed rescue group. This is a very sweet dog who needs a new home. His owner was moved into a care facility and family is unable to keep him. He is currently boarded at a Kennel (for the last 6 months), but needs a true home. He deserves it. He has lived with other dogs and children. He has not spent much time around cats. It would be ideal to be able to be with someone who would be willing to let him visit his original owner from time to time as he is very loved.

Chelsea has the cutest button nose and by FAR the best smile I have ever seen on a dog. She even lets out little snores when she sleeps. This girl is guaranteed to make you smile all the time. She has not been around small children. If you're looking for a beautiful, smart, and loyal life long companion, Chelsea is definitely your girl!

Meet Rusty...Rusty and I met at Heartland Animal Rescue in Hutchinson in December. He stole my heart. Having had a rough life with much neglect and being fearful of an abusive male owner, he has learned during the past three months to build a bond and once again, begin to trust. He has a willing spirit to learn and loves much. I feel Rusty needs added to his life another dog to share his life with. He is very much wishing walks and being outdoors, socializing and just being himself. Rusty is a very loving animal and he needs the companionship of possibly a woman owner, as he has learned to bond with me. He has trust issues with ... (Read More)males which is quite understandable. He is nonaggressive, but is discovering he does not need to cower any longer. He will be loved and I have made that promise to him. What I need from his potential new adoptive mother, is a warm, loving home. Physically, I have had medical issues arise that are needing attention and he is needing more physical activity than I am able to give. Please, if you think Rusty and you are a good match, contact me. We would both like to meet you and see if there is a fit. (Less)

aisy was a stray found in St Paul, and brought to the St Paul AHS . She was actually a dog known to the AHS community outreach person. Daisy had a microchip, but sadly was not reclaimed by her family. She was living with children, no cats, and she does seem very excited by the sight of small animals, but her attention can be redirected . She is particularly easy to walk when using a Gentle Leader, and is becoming a much calmer dog than when we first got her. She's very responsive to the training sessions at Happy Tails on Monday nights and is currently successful in her day care play groups. She's going to be the love of someone's life soon, ... PIease Read Before Adopting a Dog in Minnesota
Dogs can make good pets in Minnesota if they match your IifestyIe. Dogs have a reputation for being "man's best friend" for excellent reasons. Dogs are wonderful companions. Many breeds, in addition to being affectionate, devoted members of the family, are useful working dogs and guardians. Most dogs form tight bonds with their humans, and need to be cared for like the valuable family members they are. But sadly, some owners do not live up to the responsibility and involvement it takes to properly care for a dog throughout its life. Dogs can become the victims of neglect or active abuse. Some dogs receive tender, attentive care from their owners, but no longer have a home after their owner passes away or experiences a major life event that makes him unable to keep his dog. There are many more dogs than there are homes for dogs, and dogs that are not spayed or neutered can accidentally produce large numbers of puppies, exacerbating overpopulation. For this reason, three to four million dogs, many of them perfectly healthy and wonderful animals, are euthanized in the U.S. each year.

Many people get excited about owning a new dog, decide to get a puppy, and then pick one out at a pet shop or visit a breeder with a new litter. However, there are so many wonderful, friendly dogs in need of adoption, including puppies and purebreds. Some of these dogs might even be a better fit for a family than a new puppy; for instance, some adult dogs in need of adoption are already housebroken and obedience trained. Adoption is typically much less expensive than purchasing a dog. People who adopt dogs find the experience extremely rewarding, bond very closely with their dogs, and have the added satisfaction of knowing that one less animal has to be euthanized. If your family is ready for a canine companion, please consider adopting a dog!
