Dottie was found by a Good Samaritan nearly starved to death in the woods. They saved her and did what they could for her, but couldn't keep her. Sawyer is between 5-6 years old. I adopted him several years ago from a kill shelter when he was going to be put down. He has been a great dog, but he truly requires more love than a normal dog. He was SEVERELY abused when I got him. He would not stop shaking, would not come out of his kennel, and would urinate all over himself from anxiety. The past few years he has made some serious progress, but still has issues with separation anxiety. There are also times that he fast movements or loud noises make him cower. Sawyer gets along with our other dog fine, but he needs to warm up to new ones. While he is small, he sometimes has the attitude of a 100 lb dog. He likes to be the 'big dog' on the block. He LOVES the cat and they sleep together and play all the time. I am only looking for a home for him, because it has become very difficult to leave him at home for 8-9 hours kenneled and then come home to him being very high strung and anxious. He needs to be kenneled while gone, because otherwise he tends to have accidents in the house due to his anxiety. He does not chew or tear anything up. I used to be a college/ graduate student and was able to leave him for short periods of time and I had a very flexible job that I could take him to work with me. Now, I am in a traditional office job and it breaks my heart to have to kennel him for that long. On October 3rd, he had his dental cleaning and check-up with a clean bill of health. He did have a few cracked teeth due biting at his kennel door. The vet said it is normal for dogs that have separation problems, and just suggested keeping an eye on his teeth to watch for breaking. Ideally, he would go to a home that he would not have to be in a kennel all day. I have also looked into medications to help him, but have not pursued any at this time. He also currently has a wellness plan through Banfield Pet Clinic at PetCo. He also does best when he is walked for 30 min or so before being put in the kennel. This still only works for when he is kenneled for a short time. I am in no rush and want to find the perfect home for him. He loves to be held, cuddle up and sleep under the blankets. He knows some basic commands and is house trained (except for issues with separation). He has some quirks but is really a wonderful dog full of love. I came to Wayside as a transfer from the shelter in Topeka, KS. When I got here, Doc realized that I had a problem with my eyelid irritating my eye. So, after having surgery to correct the problem, I've been getting nurtured back to health in a loving foster home for about a month now. Life is good here! I've been busy learning all sorts of new things during my time in foster. I'm already crate trained, but I'm still working on housetraining in general. Please be patient with me and continue to teach me about that, since I'm sort of a work in progress. I will also need continued obedience training with my new family, so that I can be the well behaved dog that I strive for. I'm a perfect candidate for training, because I am smart, eager to please, and very food motivated. A tasty treat and a little praise go a long way with me and help me to learn what you expect from me. Foster Mom uses positive reinforcement training and that's working out really well for me. She can give you pointers on effective methods of training for me. I've already come so far! I listen to my people and look to them for direction. I'm also very respectful and appropriate in my play with other dogs. I live with another dog in my foster home and we get along just great. I was abandoned awhile back in Greenwood, MO, before making my way here to Wayside. Wow%BD'%BD|that was a scary time for me. I've sort of blocked it all from my mind. I didn't really want anyone to come near me back then, so I tried to hide in the back of my kennel. The Wayside staff and volunteers refused to give up on me though, and I've come so far since those first days. I'm still shy and leery of new things, and I still like it when people take things slowly with me, but I'm learning to love life and that's such a great feeling. I've been living in my foster home for about a month now and life is exhilarating! Oh, it wasn't always that way, but once I became comfortable and learned to trust, I sort of went overboard with the family. The puppy in me that had never been loved came out in full force, and I turned into a lovey, high energy, playful, jumpy gal who couldn't get enough attention. I look to Foster Mom for direction though, and when she says 'gentle', I know I need to calm down a notch. I'm smart that way. In fact, the sky is the limit with what I can learn. I already know several commands, including 'sit', 'stay', 'down', 'come', and 'shake'. I love tasty treats and I love to make you happy, so I pick up on things very quickly. I need you to use positive reinforcement with me, please, so praise me when I'm a good girl. That will teach me what your expectations are and help build my confidence at the same time. Someone must have treated me harshly in my past, because sometimes I cower when I think I'm in trouble. I'm sensitive and I want to please you, so I will thrive if you can ignore my bad behavior while praising the good. Please be patient and calm and gentle and consistent with me as I learn. It takes me time to adjust and learn to relax with you, so I appreciate your understanding. My foster family loves having me as a guest in their home! I make everyone laugh when I crawl up in Foster Dad's lap to cuddle. We share the big recliner chair and I think I'm a lap dog. I also like to curl up next to you on the couch and can work my way in even the smallest of spots to be near you. I'm well behaved in my home when someone is around. When no one is there, I stay with my foster dog brother in a pen and that's just fine with me. I do like to destroy things like beds and blankets and toys when I'm left alone. When Foster Mom gets home, I pretend like it wasn't me, but she usually figures it out. Just keep a close eye on me and don't leave me alone with a big plushy bed! I love to get out in the fresh air for exercise, so I hope you like that, too! I'm playful and energetic and active. I do just great on my leash, so I'll make the perfect walking or running partner for you. I hope you don't mind giving me time and space as I get acclimated to my new home. Please go slow with me, especially when introducing me to new people. When I'm unsure, I let out a little growl sometimes, to let people know to give me more space. I think I'll be happiest in a home without kids under the age of 12. I just don't want to have to deal with them. I love other dogs and would love to go home with another, but sometimes my play gets rough and rambunctious. So please bring any other dogs you have out to meet me before we go home together, just to be sure we get along great. And I want a home without cats, please, because I just don't like them. No one in my life ever took the time to teach me about communicating and bonding with people. When I wanted attention, I jumped on people and nipped at them. I wanted to be sure they knew I was there and that was the only way I knew to ask for what I wanted. If I had known then what I know now, I never would have acted this way! I was so unhappy about living in the shelter'|I didn't like my kennel and all the barking dogs were driving me crazy. I was just about to give up on the idea of finding a happy life, when my loving foster mom showed up. Whew! She whispered to me that enough was enough. She was just sure that all I needed was to get into a home environment and then things would begin to fall into place for me. She was so right! Life in my foster home has been one adventure after another! Foster Mom says I just continue to get better and better every single day. She smiles the biggest smile when she talks about me and she is so very proud of me. I am a smart dog who loves to learn, so the sky is the limit with me. I've already learned plenty. I love to play with the other dogs in my foster home, but I've learned that the older dog doesn't really like to play, so I leave him alone. And one of the dogs gets tired of playing before I do, so I now know when to stop. I've learned that my crate isn't such a bad place, especially when there is a peanut butter filled kong waiting for me in there. I stay in my crate when Foster Mom isn't home and I do really well there. I'm crate trained and mostly housebroken, so I don't cause any problems around the house. I'm well behaved in a fenced in yard too, and I love to ride in the car! Sometimes I forget my manners and I do a little counter surfing, but Foster Mom is working with me on that. She understands that food was scarce when I was out on my own, so this kitchen filled with food is just so tempting to me! Once I learn that I will always have a healthy meal waiting for me, I'll do just fine. Foster Mom laughs when she thinks about what a character I am. She says I'm just a silly, playful, fun dog who likes to have a good time. After all my play though, I can't think of anything better than curling up next to her and cuddling. I'm an affectionate and loving girl who longs to be by your side. In my new home, I hope you will show me plenty of patience and give me the attention I need to thrive.
