Rescue Me ID: 16-09-24-00245Tucker (male)

Shih Tzu    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Needs Vaccinations

Tucker is a happy, smart little guy who loves everybody, and is confident you will like him too! He barks when someone comes to the door, but as soon as he meets the guest he stops barking and welcomes them. He's not a yappy dog, except if left alone. He needs a home where someone is home most of the time, or he can go with his people, or there is another dog for company so he doesn't get lonely. He is a velcro dog with humans and family pets. I haven't seen him with children but given how sweet he is, I'm confident he will be fine. He gets along with our cats, including our tiny kitten, once they put him in his place. Aside from normal ... (Read More)puppy playfulness, he is a calm lap dog who wants to sit close. He likes to go for walks but they aren't required. He is good on a leash and riding in the car. He doesn't chew furniture or shoes but likes the stuffed animals I buy at the Goodwill. He is not food aggressive, gets along well with other dogs. He still needs some work on potty training. He is, after all, still a puppy. At 10 months, he is twelve pounds of affection and cuteness. His fur is as soft as velvet. He loves to snuggle on the couch and on our bed. He likes to jump on our porch swing and ride it as it rocks back and forth. What a character! Tucker was found abandoned in a dog park. I adopted him a week ago from a shelter after one of our dogs disappeared and we were consumed with grief. Tucker instantly brought joy and laughter into our home. Then, out of the blue, our lost dog reappeared, bedraggled from his mysterious journey. Three dogs is a handful. There's no way I can send Tucker back to a cement cell at a shelter. He deserves to be with someone who loves him as much as he loves life, which is a lot! Tucker is perfectly healthy. He was recently neutered, de-wormed, and has a microchip. He comes with a free vet visit for his next round of puppy shots. (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 16-09-23-00464Artemis (female)

Alaskan Malamute    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Very Dominant
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Meet Artemis. She is a pure bread Alaskan Malamute and will be 6 yrs old this November. She weights 110lbs and is considered to be of healthy weight. She IS spayed, but has Hypothyroidism. This means she takes 2 pills a day; one in the morning and one in the evening. This helps regulate her weight and keep her coat beautiful. She is up to date on all of her shots, and records can be obtained per request. She is on a grain free diet; specifically she eats Whole Earth Farms grain free formula. We are her original owners, and purchased her from Cascade Kennels in Washington State. Artemis is very loving to her people; loves to roll over and ... (Read More)get her belly rubbed and she will cuddle in bed or on the couch if you allow her up. As per malamute personality, she is a talker. She will howl or whine if left alone, or if separated from her people. When she is separated, she does not eat the walls or d̩cor. However, if you leave dishes in the sink or butter on the counter and she is left alone'|.she will pull dishes out and lick them clean or eat the Tupperware and butter. Artemis is very food motivated, but has never harmed a human over her food. She will grumble if someone or another dog is trying to mess with her as she eats, but again doesn't react physically to a human. It is possible that she will snarl at another dog that comes up as she eats, but she has never attacked. This behavior eases over time as she gets to know the other animals in the home. She has moved with us several times, and adjusted to new animals throughout the various moves, so I am confident she will adjust well in her placement. When it comes to cats, she does quite well once she gets to know them. She was raised with cats and small dogs, but Artemis is an Alpha female. She will grumble at other dogs for a while, and then adjusts nicely. However, she will want to rule the roost. Her Alpha tendencies have improved since getting spayed, but the behavior still lingers at times. She is incredibly strong and stubborn, but does well on a leash (I don't suggest a harness due to it making her think she is supposed to pull). Artemis isn't sure about small children. She will grumble at them and walk away if she doesn't want to be bothered, but she never has harmed a child. Artemis likes her own space in the house. She tends to curl up in corners where it is coolest or a breeze is available. So I would suggest a bed filled with cedar shavings, otherwise there is a chance she will destroy a fluff filled bed. She loves treats (no real surprise there) but absolutely LOVES stuffed dog toys with a squeaker inside. While they won't last very long (destruction of the squeaker becomes her goal in life) but she acts like a puppy during the process. Artemis, like most dogs, loves walks. She used to run beside my husband on his bike as well, though she could use some work on this practice since it has been so long. She absolutely loves to ride in the car and stick her head out the window, as long as you don't mind slobber running down the side of your car. At dog parks, she does well off leash. She tends to just roam around on her own and doesn't really care about the other dogs. She loves walking in tall grass and will remain close and respond when called. When it comes to bathing, she hates water. She will struggle with you, and her size makes it difficult. However, she does well at the groomer (go figure.) But always request that she not be blow dried. The sound makes her anxious and difficult. We love Artemis very much, but she needs more time and space than we can offer her. When we originally got her, we had 3 acres of land to let her run. Now we are in a town house with no fenced yard, causing her to get bored. We understand the needs for a Malamute of her size, which is why we are seeking someone with plenty of space and time so that she can live the full life that she deserves. Giving her up is extremely difficult for us, and we wish we didn't have to. If possible, we would like updates from her new home; pictures via email. Please contact me via email or text for more information (Less)

Lab Mix    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: High Energy, Submissive
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Aggie is our beloved and adored family pet. She is approximately 18 months old, house trained, heel trained, good with recall, loves to play fetch, swim, play at the dog park and with other dogs and adores snuggling. She does still enjoy puppy activities like chew toys (both bought and self designated) but she's my sweetheart and this is breaking my heart. She alerts to my migraines so it's especially hard to give her up as we've begun training her for her public access test as a service dog. Unfortunately, one of my children is very ill and requires ongoing hospitalization. As a single mother, I can't justify the amount of time Aggie has ... (Read More)been and will be left on her own. I'd love for her to go to a family who wants a dog with energy. She's bouncy and goofy, definitely with the Lab silliness. She bonds tightly with her people and loves hard. I'd love to meet you if you're interested in talking to me about her. (Less)

Please, if you email an inquiry, please understand that these animals are in the shelter for a variety of reasons: Their lives are upside down maybe because owner died, they got lost, were abandoned, owner lost home or had a life event that left their pet in need of a new home. We don't always know how they will get along with all dogs, all children. Some won't be a perfect family member right away! They will need love, patience, a strong owner who will let them know what is expected of them and what they can expect from their new family. It may take an afternoon or it may take a week or so! Hiker? Someone who could take me on adventures? I am happy and friendly to everybody, even when I act a bit shy at first.     Hi Everybody! I'm Branson and I'm about 6 years old, and everyone says I'm a good-looking guy! I was rescued from a high kill shelter in Hesperia, CA, and brought to Oregon. Right now I am in Salem, OR, in a boarding kennel, until I can find my forever home and loving family up here in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. I'm house, leash, crate, and kennel trained. I'm very children and people friendly and have been kenneled with other medium-sized dogs. (I do like the girl dogs the best, though.) However, I don't like cats. No thank you, I say! They are annoying, smell funny, and, I think they need to be chased off like all the other ... (Read More)squirrely-looking varmints I see. I love to be outside, but I like to be inside with you as well, just moseying around. I'd love to walk, hike, and even jog with you. I might be middle-aged but I'm pretty healthy and active. I'm looking for someone with a big yard or property to play and explore on. I don't like to be cooped up in an apartment or a condo all day. My adoption fee is $350.00 and includes my neuter, vaccines, rabies shot, microchip, collar, & leash. A sponsor has paid for my transportation to Oregon already. Kennel life can be hard on guys like me. So, if you're interested in finding a new best furry friend and family member, I promise to shower you with love, kisses, and a ton of tail wags in return. Please email us and we will send you an adoption application to start the process. Thanks so much! (Less)

Let me introduce my handsome self to you. My name is Boone. I am a 4-5 year old Lab and German Shepherd mix. I am fully vetted, neutered and have all my shots. I am a very affectionate boy and while not a puppy anymore (so I don't chew things like puppies or mess in the house and be totally trusted to be alone at home for hours), I still have lots of energy to do whatever you want whether its jogging or just hanging out. I'm a very smart boy, good with most dogs and fine with kids. I'm house trained and I do like a crate, too. I was in a county shelter for eleven months alone and looking for someone just like you to open your heart and home ... (Read More)to me. My two rescue heroes, Debbie and Bruce, volunteers from the Puppy Coalition, found me and said, 'That's long enough. You are coming with us, Buddy.' I walk well on a leash and I really really love to go for walks. I just want my own home and my own human to love.. Won't you give me the chance to show you how much I will love you and be your Furever? The volunteers that care for me at the kennel said that my little ad on the whole world wide web might be the best way to let people know about me and that --- just maybe --- the person who is suppose to find me will find my little ad.. Is that you? Could it be? Geez, I hope so. The adoption fee is $100 to cover some of my expenses. Please, PM Debbie Snow for any additional information. Hope to see you soon. Paws crossed hard, Sincerely, Boone Boone is in California but can be transported to Oregon. Transport fee is $150 (Less)

Animal ID: WGSRsvs092116SAM VON STRADTRODA (male)

German Shepherd    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Not Good w/ Other Dogs, Not Good w/ Cats, Good w/ Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Sam von Stradtroda is a stunning 6-7 year old, very well trained German Shepherd, that needs a loving forever home. He is currently housed in temporary kennels in Los Angeles and is hoping to live in the Pacific Northwest some day soon. Sam is everything you have dreamed of in a German Shepherd: strong, loyal, intelligent and sweet. He is a mid-energy guy that loves to show off when playing fetch. He loves his toys and displays some characteristic working-dog traits. Sam shows you his affection by giving you his toys and has been known to present his favorite Frisbee to his handler's friends to throw for him. Once Sam bonds with you, he ... (Read More)will demonstrate his loyalty by protecting you from others and will need proper introduction to your house guests. Sam is not bothered by loud noises and seems especially drawn to fire trucks and police cars (perhaps showing his inclination to work), but he is not a fan of bicycles or skateboards screaming by him on the sidewalk. In his foster home, Sam has shown remarkable house manners. He will only get on furniture if invited. He is also housebroken and non-destructive when left alone. Sam is so intelligent -- he knows his advanced commands in English and in German and always seems to understand you. He even knows his toys by name. Sam would love to be in a home where he is the only dog with a GSD-savvy, mature owner, and no children. He does prefer females but will also bond with a man. If you are a person alone or a female couple needing protection from intruders, Sam would be your perfect match, especially if you have a big yard for him to play fetch in. If you adopt Sam, you will find yourself with the most loyal and devoted friend you'll ever have. Sam's adoption fee is $245 plus fees for transportation to OR/WA and a health certificate. Ground transportation up the Interstate 5 corridor is available for approximately $225 and takes about 24-30 hours from LA. Please email us and we will send you the link for his application. Once you submit your application, someone will call you from Westside German Shepherd Rescue of LA to discuss Sam's attributes and characteristics with you in detail. Thank you for reaching out to a rescue to adopt your next dog! (Less)

German Shepherd Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Hi Everybody, We are Gia and Ali, 2 year old, German Shepherd sisters that were rescued from a kill shelter in Hesperia, CA. We are very friendly. We love children, adults and other dogs, but we don't know any cats. We are crate, kennel, leash, and house trained. We know some of our basic commands, too. We've had a tough beginning to life because we don't look perfect. My ears don't stand up (Gia) and my one ear is a bit goofy (Ali) but we are still very sweet and smart pups that just want to please you. We are a bonded pair. Sometimes people think that it is too much work to take in two dogs together at the same time, but we would play ... (Read More)together in our yard and exercise ourselves, if we had some property to run on. Gia really needs me (Ali) to restore her confidence in herself and not feel afraid of 'the bad guys' anymore. Once we know we are safe with you, we are all smiles and fun. Our adoption fee is $250 each for a total of $500 which includes our spays, our vaccines, our rabies shots, our micro-chips, our collars and leashes, and our transportation to Oregon/Washington up the I-5 corridor. Our transportation has been paid already by another sponsor, so we get a free ride to the beautiful Pacific Northwest! We will make you smile and laugh and give you cuddles and hugs forever, if you adopt us. We offer you all that pet therapy for just a cozy home, a warm bed indoors, and a loving family in exchange. Please adopt us and take us home with you. We are in desperate need of a dog-lover's love! (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 16-09-19-00647Gunner aka 'land Hippo (male)

Pit Bull    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

4Gunner's 3 week foster mom report: I have to say this dog has impressed me so much in 3 short weeks. I got the impression in the beginning he did not have much socialization or exposure to anything. Didn't know how to go up and down stairs, didn't know what a dog bed was, didn't know how to play with toys, didn't know how to walk on a leash very well, afraid of loud noises and wasn't to sure about riding in the car. Over all I would say that he was scared. Never while in that state did he ever show of any signs of aggressiveness, remained sweet and patient while learning new things. Gunner is non food aggressive, you can put your hands in ... (Read More)his food bowl and mouth while he is eating, fish tiny pebbles out of his mouth without a care, I have done this several times (haha) he allows you to touch him everywhere, he has no issue with any thing you want to do with him. He is not possessive of his toys and readily shares with his human and dog friends. He sleeps quietly in his large crate at night and is very content. He enjoys playing with one of his foster sisters, she is very active and will initiate play with him. The other girl is older and a bit grumpy, but they coexist with each other just fine. Gunner will require a slow introduction to new dogs typical of bully breeds and does not like to be challenged by strange dogs, but is easily redirected and I'm sure this will lessen with more exposure and after being neutered. He loves the water and enjoys his walks/hikes and always wants to stay close to you. He does not seem to care about rabbits, squirrels or other wild life while on his walks and shows no reaction to them. He is non reactive around screaming school kids and will walk quietly past all pedestrians young and old. He is not a 'happy jack' when he meets someone new, he remains calm and allows them to pet him. He is a good watch dog and keeps an eye on his home, he will bark if he hears something unusual, but over all he is very quiet. He loves to be with you, lays in the kitchen while we cook and genuinely loves to be with his people/dog family. He is very affectionate and loves to be cuddled. He is a gentle boy and I think he will make the most amazing companion for a family. It has been such a pleasure for us to watch Gunner's transformation, I believe he is now ready to find his forever family (Less)

American Staffordshire Terrier Mix    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Low Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Judy is a stunning 5-year-old blue and white female Staffordshire Terrier mix who was dumped at a high-kill shelter after years go being bred. A petite, but strong girl at roughly 50lbs, Judy is an affectionate, loving girl with a sweet disposition and adorable little 'talking' noises that she makes when she gets excited. Delightful to be around, she is certain that she is lap dog trapped in the body of a small hippo. Judy was clearly bred for her entire life and since up until now she's been treated as a puppy machine, we really think she would enjoy a household where she could be the center of attention. Although she is non-reactive to ... (Read More)other dogs, she is still deciding how she feels about them in her space and you can tell she gets a bit nervous in their presence if they become too interested in her. We have seen for ourselves what a sweet and well-mannered girl she can be and we know with continued training she is going to make a fabulous, loyal companion. Curious and treat-motivated, this smart girl walks decently on leash and even knows how to 'sit' on command. Judy has had a rough first chapter in her life and deserves to be loved and treated like the princess she is now. She is spayed, microchipped and up to date on vaccines. (Less)

A real love bug with people (he won't hesitate to hop right up into your lap for attention), he also gets along with other dogs. Ruthie was put through training with a professional dog trainer. After 14 sessions of training, she has improved, but stills displays anxiety. Ruthie thrives as a single dog at home. Ruthie does amazing on long hikes and walks, but her forte is cuddling. The current foster parents have had Ruthie under our care for almost a year and we know she's a very loving and can be a calm dog, especially when the other dogs are not around. Australian Shepherd    Age: Young Adult

Health: Spayed

Subi has the sweetest dispostion. She loves to adventure and explore, she loves to hike, run, swim, snuggle, chase a ball, roll over, sit, shake, and give high-fives. What she DOESN'T like is our other two dogs :( Subi began living with us this last year after our daughter went through a divorce and could no longer care for her. It was supposed to be temporary, but it has become permanent. We live in a one-bedroom 3-dog house, where one dog (Subi) is incompatible with the others. This makes for lots of tension. But really the biggest concern is that Subi deserves and wants to enjoy a life filled with love and attention. Instead she ... (Read More)finds herself regularly in the kennel within sight (or earshot) of the other two dogs, which brings her anxiety. It is unfair to ALL of the dogs, and Subi really needs to find her perfect and forever home: with someone who wants the PERFECT furry-companion. She is really so eager to please. Although she has PLENTY of energy, she isn't a hyper aussie. She calms down pretty quickly and is just so happy to be in the same room as her family...preferably right at their feet or keeping watch right by their side. She doesnt bark a lot: mostly she barks at the other dogs. Otherwise she is NOT annoying or loud. We will insist on getting some sort of personal references and will ask a billion questions. It is breaking our hearts for her to go. But it just isn't fair for this sweet girl to be kept in this environment. So, we will be looking for a home with a big heart, and humans eager to love on this beautiful girl. If you have any more questions, please feel free to call or message. Just to be clear: please don't even call if you have other dogs in the home. She really needs to be the one and only. (Less)

This is another chapter of in the life of Sami- or One Eye Sam a a 13 pound chihuahua min pin mix,is a sweet affectionate boy whose family have run into difficulties. On July15, 2016 he was featured on the local daily courier- of Grants Pass- for his new dog house- after having been on a tie out- and a Bird of Prey picked him up-, but because he was on the tie out- the bird dropped him; but he suffered eye damage and was going to be euthanized- when the Toby Fund stepped in and paid for his surgery. And now another chapter of his life unfolds. For a time he was with another family member- and not allowed in the house. He was flea infested. ... (Read More)Not allowed in the house for a time- he needed to relearn his potty manners.. he is doing splendidly on this now. He is so very affectionate and loves to be with people. He gets on with other dogs of all sizes and breeds- except a foster buddy who as well is scheduled for neutering- so there is a bit of a dominance thing for him over the other. But he does get along with 9 out of 20 dogs. Cats are unknown. If there are children they need to be respectful- as he on occasion may be unsure of himself and quick movement toward him could make him nervous. He loves to cuddle- loves to play and romp and ride in the car. I think an older family would be best-. If you have another pooch- a meet and greet is in order. But I will say- he was plunged into a large pack and did very well. If left alone- he will whine- a bit.. but settles down. he is not destructive, is a light eater, and really eager to please. Please tell me about you, your family, other pets, yard, own or rent; your expectations of your new pooch, what pooch can expect from you! Please provide this information and city in which you live with contact phone number. This is not a first come first serve placement. The objective is to find the perfect home for pooch and family. If you do not provide requested information- please do not expect a reply to your inquiry. I will review all inquires. There is reasonable Fee requested to offset cost of neutering and rabies vaccine. (Less)

Pit Bull    Age: Puppy

Personality: High Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Portland is a 1 1/2 year old Blue Nose Pitbull. We have had him since he was 6 wks old. He's a goofy boy with so much love to give. He is good with all dogs but would be best in a home where he gets all the attention and love. He can be a bit of a jealous knucklehead at times. He loves toys, walks, and cuddles. He knows basic commands sit, shake, lay down. And without a lot of distractions he can learn many more. Is is very food motivated. It breaks our heart to re-home him, he is very much a part of our family. We need him to go to a loving home where he can get the attention and love he deserves. Local adoption only.

Lab    Age: Young Adult

Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Daisy, here! Could anyone give me a new home? I was brought to the shelter by someone whose house I was left at. I am a 5 year old Lab and weigh 96 lbs. I am friendly and goofy and love to snuggle. My former roommate described me as very protective of my people so caution with small children may be in order. I am a loyal girl looking for someone new to take on as my own pack. Available at the Josephine County Animal Shelter, 1420 Brookside Blvd. 1.5 miles off I-5. in Merlin. Oregon. hours: Monday -Friday 10-4:30pm Saturday 10-4pm. You can make application via the Shelter Website: http://www.jocoshelter.com/#!adoptions/c6mv copy into ... (Read More)your url. PLEASE READ ENTIRE NOTATIONS BELOW. The most common question is 'Good with Cats?' If we know has lived with cats or farm animals will be stated above in biography. Otherwise- we don't know. If you inquire by email- please tell us about you, your family, your yard, other animals, children, and your expectations of your new pet and what your new pet can expect from you. When you do so, we can better address your inquiry. Shelter number 541 474-5458 for status of availability as some may have been adopted since this post, and about any pending spay/neuter surgery if noted as sometimes spay/neuter appointment may be sooner if a cancellation is available. Dogs noted as a Great American Shelter Dog are noted as such because we are not sure of the breed and can only give out best guess. See more at: www.savethewhiskers.org Alternate Contact Raleigh@savethewhiskers.org or text 541 660 6578 name of dog. It is always nice if you send an inquiry about a specific adoptable guest via email to tell us about you, your family and other pets, your yard, and most importantly, your expectations of your new family member so we can answer your questions appropriately as best as possible. But they need homes and families who will bring them back to knowing what family is! Puppies: Please understand they are puppies; not potty trained; not good or bad with kids, dogs, cats. They are pliable puppies ready for you to imprint good manners, social skills and training. You are encouraged to follow up with training after they are finished with shot series and or at the direction of your veterinarian. A happy healthy well socialized puppy is a happy family! You may be asked to make a refundable deposit for spay/neutering. Inquire at the Shelter. General Adoption Fees for Dog: Adult dogs and puppies- $125, Senior dogs 7 and over $50. Veterans are half price / $62.50 with presentation of government issued VA ID. For Josephine County fee includes first year licensing. Please visit the shelter or if need special arrangements for meet and greet please email me. If you have a dog- encourage you to bring also. Staff may be unable to answer calls right away, so you may contact me via email if you cannot get to shelter right away! You are encouraged to make your best effort to go during normal business hours. Note: Often times we are asked 'what about cats'?' Please be advised that we cannot guarantee a dog's behavior with a cat; sometimes the dog is fine with a cat- but cat not so happy about his canine intruder! If we know emphatically that a dog could take issue with a cat, livestock or chickens- will be stated in body of biography! Excellent house manners and can stay inside all night without any accidents. He is very playful with his toys and like to run with me on the trails. He does not trust/like cats. But I wouldn't either. Hes 2 years old. Vader is a good boy. He looks intimidating, but he's really just a big lovable oaf. German Shepherd Mix    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Duke here! I am a young fella, only 1 1/2 years old, hoping to find a new home that can appreciate potential and willing to invest time and provide activity so he can be all he can be which is eager to please! A German Shepherd mix I weigh 68 lbs and am what shelter staff refer to as a Class 5 Wiggle Butt. Seriously--come see for yourself, my tail never stops wagging! I am happiest when I am with people. So happy that sometimes I get excited to jump on them, but I am working on that. I can be a bit nervous in new situations, but I am learning to just go with the flow. It is always nice if you send an inquiry about a specific adoptable guest via email to tell us about you, your family and other pets, your yard, and most importantly, your expectations of your new family member so we can answer your questions appropriately as best as possible. Ellie is a 3 year old mix who is extremely affectionate and sweet. She loves to sleep in, is housebroken and knows all the basic commands. While she has shown aggression toward some dogs, she generally plays really well with others, especially male companions. While she has spent her last two years in a home with young children she might be better suited in a home with no children or older children. She needs to be in a secure yard as she does love to explore if given the opportunity. She is a wonderful dog that is excited to find her forever home.
