Rescue Me ID: 15-06-29-00148Nick-E (female)

German Shepherd Mix    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Not Good with Other Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Nick-e came to Almost Home Dog Rescue from a high kill shelter in Florida. The veterinarian believes that she is about 9 years old but she acts much younger. Give Nick-e a toy and watch her. We believe that Nick-e is a hoarder. Yes, that is right, a hoarder. Nick-e thinks that no toy is safe unless it is in HER crate. Although her crate is stuffed with toys, she keeps it very neat and orderly. She loves to forage through the toy boxes to see what she wants to bring in next. Nick-e does have a couple of special needs. She is not necessarily keen on all other dogs. Upon her arrival, it was discovered that Nick-e had severe issues with ... (Read More)her intestinal system. After trips and conversations with the veterinarian, treatment with various medications (and no resolution), it was determined that Nick-e probably had many food allergies. She was switched to a raw meat diet (chicken) and has done famously. Although some might not agree with this type of protocol, Nick-e really would need to be continued on this diet in order to avoid her health issues. (Because she was an owner surrender, we believe that the health issues could have been something that her previous owners could not resolve)She is a very happy go lucky kind of girl that dreams of having her own family someday. German Shepherd    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Kaysar is a gorgeus 6 year old male German Shepherd dog that weighs about 70 pounds. Kaysar came from Miami Dade Shelter in Florida which is a very large high kill shelter. This was the second time he was brought to this horrible place. You see, he was at the shelter when he was a puppy. The very people who adopted him in his puppyhood, surrendered him to this place when he was five. When we first saw Kaysar, he was at the top of the list for euthanasia. There was a video posted of him crying in his kennel as people walked past him. He knew how horrible this place was and that he was suffering from the 'black dog syndrome' that is ... (Read More)so prominent in the south. It wasn't his fault that he was black. Kaysar has a definite zest for life. He would do best with an active family and with children over the age of 12 because of his size. He is crate trained, knows sit, down and walks well on a leash. (Don't forget to rub his belly, he really likes that!) He is a splendid looking fella and really deserves that forever home where he can be the center of your world. He will be sure to give you back tons of love and devotion. Are you that forever family that Kaysar is looking for? (Less)

Dessa is a 5 year old, female, Shepherd mix whose family can no longer keep her. Where she's been living she's had limited space causing her to be overweight and needing to release her energy. American Staffordshire Terrier    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: High Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed

When we hear the name, Daisy, the flower of the same name first comes to mind. Daisies are cheerful. They have a simplicity in their beauty. They are vigorous and, above all, resilient. These characteristics also aptly describe our Daisy. Daisy was rescued from a particularly horrid shelter environment. She was in such poor health, that we almost lost her. Her recovery has been miraculous and serves as a testament to both the love and care she received, and to her own resilient spirit. Daisy wears a gentle-leader harness for walks. At night she sleeps in her crate. A spray water bottle interrupts unwanted behavior and good behavior is ... (Read More)rewarded with affection and treats. Daisy knows Sit and Down. Daisy is a strong chewer, so Nylabone-type bones work well. She also loves to chase and chew ice-cubes. Daisy is playful and would also enjoy chasing a ball. She is equally affectionate and will kiss and canoodle her people. Daisy is playful and loves other dogs. She likes to set the stage as the alpha. She can become excited and 'mouthy' (but not aggressive) in her play, but calms immediately when corrected. Daisy shows no interest in cats and squirrels. She is gentle and loving with children. Daisy is crated when her people are out. She is excited when they return so they always make sure that she is calm before her crate door is open. Daisy is quite talkative if she needs something or during play. Daisy is as joyful as she is enthusiastic. Daisy is a high-energy girl looking for an active person or family. Daisy is a 50lb 1-year-old female American Staffordshire terrier. She is spayed, vaccinated and micro-chipped. Personality: High Energy, Somewhat Dominant
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Vinny is a 3 1/2 year old Shorty Bulldog which is an actual recognized breed. That is where the easy part ends. The information on this breed is so evasive/secretive and sometimes ambiguous that anyone wanting to research them could be driven to utter frustration. Lets just say that they are a combination of English Bulldog and maybe French Bulldog and maybe Staffordshire Bull Terrier and maybe...who knows. Vinny is awesome, brave, smart responsive, capable of bonding and trusting and adjusting to change. He loves to explore the fenced yard and is a gentleman in the house. He loves the security of his crate although I would not want a home ... (Read More)where he is crated a lot.I am going to give preference to a home with a fenced yard, no children, no other dogs (or one very submissive female), and a person or couple with bulldog experience. He has a very good mind but if bored may find ways to use it that are not positive. He is UTD on all vaccines and heartworm negative.     What a charming young man! Byron is a very well-rounded, balanced fellow. A delightful walking partner, he neither pulls ahead or drags his heels on the walk. Rescue Me ID: 15-06-16-00050Magnolia (female)

Plott Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

This pretty little native Vermonter is Magnolia. But, she goes by Maggie, because when you can save two whole syllables in a word, you do! Maggie excels in, well, everything. She is smart and eager to please, and knows: sit, down, get out of the kitchen, bedtime, outside and come. Maggie is crate-trained and housetrained and walks well wearing a gentle-leader harness. She has also developed great recall and enjoys (and needs) a good 5-minute run around the yard before bedtime. Maggie is playful and puppy-like. Her favorite toys include balls, tug-ropes, squeakies and stuffies, and she loves to play tug and wrestle. Maggie gets along well ... (Read More)with all of the other animals in the household, and with proper introductions, she also accepts additional fosters into the home . . . with each introduction, the next one is easier. Maggie is even tolerant of the chickens, although it would not be wise to leave her unsupervised with them...after all she is still a hound and a hound is a bred to hunt, so they remain penned and she leashed around them. Maggie loves everyone. She is good with children of all ages. Whether they want to play fetch with her or just snuggle. But, Maggie isn't nearly as confident as she appears. She does need for the humans in her life to be in control . . . to be assertive and respectful and provide her with a secure home with rules that she can follow. Maggie has run of the house normally when her people are home. When visitors arrive, she is crated, and only when she is calm, is she allowed to experience proper introductions. Maggie, a hound, if you recall, can be 'talkative,' at times. Like, when alerting her people to bikers and runners passing by, or when tattling about the misdeeds of others . . . 'it wasn't me, mom, but guess what _____ did?!' Maggie may never be completely at ease with strangers, but with each new exposure she learns how to conduct herself. Maggie's foster mom describes her as one of the most loving girls ever. She will curl up next to you, stare into your soul with her deep dark eyes and let you stroke her long soft ears. Ask her what she wants and she will offer you a quick kiss. Maggie craves companionship with other animals and people. Won't you welcome sweet Magnolia into your pack? Pit Bull Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Female Dogs Only
Personality: Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

This is Gizmo. Gizmo is one of THE best snugglers. Gizmo's day begins by waking up in his human's bed. He has various sleeping positions, all of them involve being right next to you. In the morning, he goes for a quick stroll to do his business, with breakfast following. Gizmo is SO intelligent and SO eager to please his people that he has learned to sit and wait to get his meals. He also sits and waits for treats. On work days, Gizmo grudgingly stays in an extra-large crate with bones and toys to chew. When his people are home, he has free-run inside. Outdoors, Gizmo uses a gentle-leader harness. He has not been tested off-leash, but of ... (Read More)course a fenced yard is every dog and dog-lover's dream. Gizmo has a fair amount of energy so daily exercise or heavy play-time is required. He has already shown a propensity toward agility training. He is young, strong, energetic, smart, curious and motivated-this combination of qualities makes him very trainable-he could certainly become a decorated agility champion. Gizmo loves people and occasionally gives kisses. He does very well when meeting dogs, he is very playful and gets along best with female dogs. He has lived with two females and one submissive male dog. The majority of the time peace reigned in the doggie kingdom, but at times of heightened anxiety (as when someone comes to the door) and sometimes around food, Gizmo showed dominance toward the male dog. It would be best for Gizmo to live in a home where he is the only male dog. He lived with two cats who were not very fond of him. He tends to be too interested in them and will chase them if they run. But, he did not hurt them. Gizmo knows: Sit, Come, Off, Down, Leave-it, Wait, No, the Chh-sound (like Caesar Milan uses) and he gives a paw. Gizmo loves being outdoors, because: grass. He loves to smell it, and roll in it, and plow through it with appreciation and delight. We think Gizmo is a practically perfect Pibble. We are looking for a foster and/or adoptive home for Gizmo. Collie Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Hi there! My name is Cleo and the people who rescued me and my pups asked me to take a moment and introduce myself. I am 2 years old, weigh a petite 29 lb, and they say I look like a Collie/Corgi mix. I am peppy and playful, house-trained, and walk nicely on leash. Classy and clever, I know 'sit' and 'come'. My foster mom boasts of my genius and how easy it is to train me. I have not met any children in my foster home but I am so cheerful and loyal to my people, I would probably be the same with kind, considerate young ones. I delight in playing and snuggling with the other dogs here. I am oblivious to the cat and chickens. My foster mom ... (Read More)told me to mention how well I ride in a car, and how quiet and undisturbed I am by all the activity around here. The noises of a loud T.V., the kitten crying, or even someone at the door doesn't get a rise out of me. I have my quirks too. I have been known to kidnap the remote and carry it around if left unattended (Animal Planet anyone?), I have also been accused of swiping a sock or two....don't worry though, I don't destroy them! In fact, I am such a good girl my people don't crate me when they're out, they let me hang out in the big den they call a bedroom. Sometimes my foster mom gives us dogs a special treat in our food bowls, I don't like the other dogs near mine and will give a little growl but I am learning that's not a good idea because my foster mom takes away the food bowl. At regular mealtime, I eat peacefully with the others. One last thing I should mention....I got this thing for butter. If it is left on the counter, something comes over me and I just can't resist it. I confess, I have jumped up on the counter to get it! I really, really hope you like me and want to adopt me anyway (just put the butter away)!!!! We are always looking for foster and/or adoptive homes.     Hi! My name is Douglas & I am a beautiful red nose pit looking for my forever home! I love my foster mom, but due to housing regulations, I have to find a new home. I had a rough life when I was little so I do have some fear based aggression issues. I am highly protective of my loved ones and can seem kind of scary if I don't know you, but it generally won't take long for me to get accustomed to you! I love snuggling up under the covers when it's time to go to bed, but if that's not you're thing, it's ok! I am crate trained and don't mind hanging out there (but I would much rather be glued to your side!). I have kind of a big mouth and can ... Rescue Me ID: 15-05-22-00082Eoyore (male)

Pit Bull    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Once abandoned in a vacant house by my 'so-called' family, my tiny pack-mate and I were named Eeyore (me) and Piglet (him) by the New York City shelter staff. However, my new foster mom said she thinks I should be called Einstein. And, not because I have a head of unruly white hair, because I do not. But, because I am the smartest pittie boy she has ever had the pleasure to work with! I assure you, those were her words, precisely. I gather my appearance can be misleading. My eyes droop in such a way as to suggest dopiness. I am eager to please and know, Sit, Down, Wait, and Come. I pick up on new commands very quickly. I sit and wait before ... (Read More)I eat my meals and before going in and out of doors. When I meet other dogs outside of the home am fine, however, within the home, I prefer other dogs to maintain calm and I correct them if they become overly excited. I consistently look to my humans for guidance and will follow their directions attentively. I am completely relaxed, non-destructive and housetrained, therefore, I am trusted alone in my room when my people are at work during the day, as well as through the night. When my people are home, I enjoy being close to them while they caress my soft velvety fur. I am initially fearful of strangers, so when visitors arrive I sit and wait, and my foster asks them to enter the home and just ignore me . . . and when I become comfortable enough to approach them, they give me treats. When I am out walking in public, I pay close attention to my human pack leader and to the task at hand, walking on leash-I am not distracted passing by other dogs or humans walking or biking. Now that it's summer, I also discovered that I enjoy cooling off in the water. Eeyore was emaciated when he was rescued from that abandoned house. It is estimated that he went without food for at least three-weeks. Understandably, he has some protective food guarding issues with other animals (not with people) which should resolve with a little more time trusting that he knows he has another meal coming, and with continued training. Eeyore would do best in a quiet and calm home which is why we are recommending a home without young children. Eeyore needs a confident leader so that he won't take on the role of pack 'protector.' His foster mom will provide training assistance to the person(s) that adopt him to ensure that he is successful in his new home. Eeyore's foster mom's final comment, 'He is a very good boy that deserves the best of homes.' Eeyore is a 55lb 5-year-old male Pit Bull. He is neutered, vaccinated and micro-chipped. German Shepherd Mix    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Not Good with Cats
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Get ready...get set...here's Jett! He's a 10.5 month old, 90ish lbs., Husky/Shepherd mix who's ready to play. Jett LIVES to play ball, always up for a game of fetch with a friend or to just bat it around the house solo. He also enjoys other toys and bones to chew on and eyeglasses too (so keep them on your face or out of reach). Jett is playful and friendly with other like-minded dogs. He is a little too playful with cats and they don't appreciate that much. Outdoor critters don't care much for his antics either but it's fun to bark and chase squirrels, birds, etc.! Jett is great with kids but because of his size, he could accidentally knock ... (Read More)over little ones. He is house and crate trained and accustomed to being crated when his people are gone during the work day. Jett knows 'sit', 'down', and comes when called. He is working on learning 'stay' and walking with a gentle leader on leash. Jett voices his opinion when seeing new people, other animals, and while playing. He's a BIG puppy who requires a little more training and fine tuning to reach his full potential. Jett is super smart and highly treat motivated. He is anxious about riding in the car and does get car sick. Jett is a loving, affectionate, fun, family dog who needs a family. Jett is neutered, up to date on vaccinations, and micro-chipped. Pit Bull Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Not Good w/ Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed

Geez, Louise! This petite brindle beauty is Louise. Louise is housetrained and is learning to walk well on leash . . . pulling a little, but getting better all the time. Louise listens intensely to her people and is eager to please and motivated by treats. She knows sit, wait and no; and is working on, come, off, lay down, back up, off, and leave it. Louise enjoys hard plastic chew toys and her foster mom bought a collection of Nylabones, special for her. If no one wants to play, Louise will happily entertain herself by dropping or tossing her toys and pouncing on them. Louise is fearful of sudden loud noises and reacts by jumping, crouching ... (Read More)and looking for reassurance from her person. Louise plays well with dogs her own size or larger, with whom she is submissively playful and respectfully reads social cues. But, those other pests, I mean, 'pets' also known as 'cats or small animals . . .' Louise is best not living with them. Little Louise loves her Lilliputians (children). She needs to be reminded to be gentle, but she is really very sweet: inviting them to play, accepting their patting and giving them love and kisses. Louise is happy to have big people play with her too. Sometimes she will invite play by nibbling on her people, and she needs reminders to use more appropriate methods. Louise sleeps in her crate at bedtime, and when her people are out. Louise is not vocal or whiney, but when she does let out a bark, the sound is so adorable that it evokes laughter. Louise has not exhibited any issues around food, but also has not been 'tested,' as she and her pack are routinely fed separately. She certainly has no problem with people sticking their hands inside her dish when she is eating. Louise is adoringly called 'Lou Lou' by her foster family. She has a happy-go-lucky personality, is easily corrected and loves pleasing her people. Louise's foster mom admits that, while she has enjoyed all of her fosters, that Louise has become her favorite. She tells us, she will be sad to let her go, but Louise deserves the best family possible. And, with just a little bit of training, Louise will be a fantastic dog for most any family. Louise completed treatment for heartworm disease. She is now a busy ball-chasing, toy tossing dog. She will require monthly heartworm prevention medication and annual testing. Louise is a 30lb 2-year-old female Pit-bull. She is spayed, vaccinated and micro-chipped. We are always looking for foster and/or adoptive homes. Staffordshire Bull Terrier Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

This is Oscar. Oscar's rescue story began when he found himself at a 'high-kill' shelter in the Big Apple (New York City) around the time of the Academy Awards show, which is how he became known as 'Oscar.' Oscar won the hearts of everyone he has met, from shelter, kennel and transport volunteers to the foster couple he currently resides with. Oscar further distinguished himself by being one of only two foster dogs that the couple's super-submissive male golden retriever (Vinny) has been comfortable playing with! Oscar is puppy-like and LOVES to play. In addition to Vinny, Oscar also peacefully cohabitates with two older female dogs. He ... (Read More)shows no signs of aggression around food or treats. Whenever his people are home, Oscar has the run of the home. At night, the entire pack sleeps in the bedroom where there are a number of comfortable options to choose from. Occasionally, Oscar will join the couple and the little-old-lady dog on the bed. A word about cats . . . Cats, belong on Broadway, where the award is called the Tony, not the Oscar . . . Hello! Cats and Oscar sadly, do not blend. Therefore, because his foster people have 2 cats, when his people are away at work, Oscar stays in a super-size crate. He does not seem to mind much, as his people try to make it as comfortable and inviting as possible and always leave him with something very special (that he only gets when he's in the crate) to chew on. If not for those pesky cats, we think Oscar would be fine with the run of the house when his people are out. He is housebroken and shows no signs of anxiety or destructive behavior. Oscar is learning to walk on leash. He just got a new 'no-pull' harness that his people love. Oscar is an energetic and athletic young dog who should have a long daily walk at the very least. But, he has the potential to enjoy so much more outdoors-from hiking with people, to playing in a safely fenced area with other dogs. Oscar is bright and agile and eager to please and has the capacity to be a star pupil in learning new things. He is routinely exposed to basic commands: Sit, Come, Wait, Down, Off, Okay and Leave It. He has done a fantastic job at sitting and waiting for his dinner, which is a lot to ask a dog who arrived looking rather under-weight. He needs to put on a few more pounds, still. Oscar is simply unconditional love in the form of a dog. Oscar is affectionate and gives occasional kisses, but is not obnoxious about it. He is a perfect companion. He is keenly tuned to his person's emotions. He loves to snuggle and keep you company wherever you are. And, if there is no room beside you or on your lap, Oscar will lay down by your feet. Please, finish this sentence, 'And, the Oscar goes to . . .' Believe me, the person who adopts this special boy will be receiving something infinitely more valuable than a 24-karat gold statuette, they will be receiving a canine soul-mate. Oscar is a 44lb 2-year-old male Staffordshire terrier mix. He is neutered, vaccinated and micro-chipped. Please visit www.pottersangelsrescue.org to fill out a foster or adoption application. Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current, Incontinent

[Read About Natural Incontinence Care] Oliver is a silly, loud breathing, snaggletoothed cutie who has moved with me from Pennsylvania, to San Francisco, and now Vermont! We've been together for a good portion of my childhood, but I am moving back to California and there aren't options for us outside of rehoming while I'm still here. Read on for details- He is a 65 lbs, 11 year old Staffordshire Terrier with a beautiful brindle coat. He is potty trained and neutered, with a great reputation at the vet. He is an older dog, so he sometimes moves slow in the morning and at night. For the most part he's quiet and loves to sleep, but he can still ... (Read More)enjoy a good walk. He loves to play with tennis balls and sticks. He does extraordinarily well with children. I have grown up with this dog! Oliver and I moved out to California in 2011 when I was 15. Since then he's lived with my aunt and uncle, their two children (at the time 5 and 7 years old), and one other dog who Oliver did just fine with. Since then he's done great living with 2 (fairly grumpy) dogs. He needs to be let out about once every two hours, or he has trouble holding his pee. He comes with a crate to be put in when nobody is home. I am a 19-year-old starting my life, and rehoming Oliver will be a good step towards that. Thank you for reading! Please feel free to contact! PIease Read Before Adopting a Dog in Vermont
Dogs can make good pets in Vermont if they match your IifestyIe. Dogs have a reputation for being "man's best friend" for excellent reasons. Dogs are wonderful companions. Many breeds, in addition to being affectionate, devoted members of the family, are useful working dogs and guardians. Most dogs form tight bonds with their humans, and need to be cared for like the valuable family members they are. But sadly, some owners do not live up to the responsibility and involvement it takes to properly care for a dog throughout its life. Dogs can become the victims of neglect or active abuse. Some dogs receive tender, attentive care from their owners, but no longer have a home after their owner passes away or experiences a major life event that makes him unable to keep his dog. There are many more dogs than there are homes for dogs, and dogs that are not spayed or neutered can accidentally produce large numbers of puppies, exacerbating overpopulation. For this reason, three to four million dogs, many of them perfectly healthy and wonderful animals, are euthanized in the U.S. each year.

Many people get excited about owning a new dog, decide to get a puppy, and then pick one out at a pet shop or visit a breeder with a new litter. However, there are so many wonderful, friendly dogs in need of adoption, including puppies and purebreds. Some of these dogs might even be a better fit for a family than a new puppy; for instance, some adult dogs in need of adoption are already housebroken and obedience trained. Adoption is typically much less expensive than purchasing a dog. People who adopt dogs find the experience extremely rewarding, bond very closely with their dogs, and have the added satisfaction of knowing that one less animal has to be euthanized. If your family is ready for a canine companion, please consider adopting a dog!
