Australian Shepherd Mix    Age: Young Puppy

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Needs to be Spayed, Vaccinations Current

This tiny, beautiful girl is Makala! She is an absolute doll who we think is a Shepherd/Lab mix from what we can see. Mikala was found at the side of the road in South Carolina at five weeks old. She was rescued and taken to a foster home where she was the smallest pup in the house. This did not stop her from introducing herself to the much bigger adult dogs in the house! You can see her eating with the 'big' pups in the picture below. She has a lot of spunk and is great with dogs, cats and kids. She is about 9 weeks old as of April 22 and thriving in one of our VT foster homes. Based on current veterinary recommendations, Makala has ... (Read More)not been spayed due to her young age and small size. We do require proof of this procedure at a later date as part of the terms of our Adoption Agreement and a generous spay refund is provided upon completion. Please discuss the correct time for the spay to be done with your veterinarian. Our adoption fee is $350 which includes age appropriate vaccines (Distemper, Bordetella, Parvo, Rabies), worming, microchipping, and health exam. He needs strangers to allow him to approach them. Once he has warmed up he is super loving and loves to be with his humans. He would do best in a home with another dog or one that takes him to doggy daycare each day to give him an outlet for his energy. Mastiff Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

We'd like to introduce you to a beautiful girl named Zelda. She's a 3 year old, 69 pound pit/Mastiff mix who has spent the last three months working in a training facility. Zelda has been fully trained on a prong and E-Collar, and she has embraced these tools wonderfully. She's house trained and crate trained, walks well on her leash, and knows a plethora of commands. She knows sit, stay, place, come, crate up, down, heel, leave it, and wait. Zelda can play rough at times, and she does show interest in other animals, but she responds to 'leave it' and will listen. Zelda has lived with young children, and she is good with them. She is not a ... (Read More)loud girl, but if there is a lot of excitement around while she is in her crate, she might whine in response. Zelda is a powerful girl, and she is a strong girl-both in body and mind, and we know that she will do best with a strong and confident leader. Zelda is a very athletic and agile girl. She loves walks and enjoys playing with other dogs. She also enjoys the company of her people, and we are told she will 'melt' in your lap when you take the time to cuddle with her. Zelda is being re-homed through the training program at Good Dogma in Grafton, NH. Training will be provided to her new home free of charge. Rescue Me ID: 17-02-02-00056Hobo (male)

Anatolian Shepherd Mix    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Not Good w/ Other Dogs, Not Good w/ Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Low Energy, Somewhat Dominant
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Hobo is about 7 years old and had lived inside a home in his early years. When his person became ill and could no longer care for him, he was moved outside. He was free to roam in a fenced in yard and had a dog house for shelter, but he spent a lot of time alone in his older years. When his person passed away, her house was put up for sale and he had to leave his home. Rather than be taken to the local high kill shelter where he would not have a chance of ever walking out - volunteers stepped in and asked if we could help. We booked him a spot on the next transport and brought him to VT. Hobo's entire world was turned upside down and he ... (Read More)has handled the changes with grace. People say eyes are the window to the soul... Hobo's eyes are full of love. He is a great companion. His eyes light up when we talk with him and he is a skilled listener. Hobo has a heart of gold and would love to have a person of his own to hang out with again. He's been so very brave but due to spending most of his time alone, he doesn't pick up on all of the social cues other dogs do. We are working with a trainer to help him with this. This handsome dog is crate trained, house broken and has great leash skills. Although he enjoys his daily walks, Hobo is also happy curled up in front of the wood stove napping or having his belly rubbed. He is a fluffy mix of several breeds primarily Anatolian Shepherd. People have shared they see St. Bernard, Husky, Collie, and Retriever in him. He weighs 75-80 lbs. Hobo is heartworm negative, neutered, up to date on vaccines, and microchipped. Please consider welcoming Hobo into your life. He will be your loyal friend and devoted companion. Our adoption fee is $350 which includes age appropriate vaccines (such as Rabies, Distemper, Bordetella, Parvo), spay/neuter, worming, microchipping, and health exam. Rescue Me ID: 16-11-16-00012LIZA (female)

Lab Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Meet Miss Liza. She is a people pleaser and is very eager to be with her people. Liza attaches quickly to her caregiver, and there are times that she needs to be reminded that she can have a life of her own! ;) She's learning that her people aren't going to disappear, and she can relax even if they aren't right there. Liza is a 4 year old, 52 pound retriever mix. She was treated for heart worm in the fall, and has been restored to full health. She's a high energy girl who loves to run, loves to walk, loves to play fetch'|loves to move! She is house trained, crate trained, and she walks well on a leash with a confident leader. She knows sit ... (Read More)and come, and she has an excellent recall (especially if you have a ball!), she also is very close to understanding 'stay.' She's very eager to play with other dogs, and can be a bit pushy so would do best with an equally playful dog of her size. Due to her excitability and strong desire to play with dogs, we are specifically looking for a home for her that does not have small dogs as we do not feel she would respect their boundaries. She lived with a cat in her foster home and did okay with that. Still proper and slow introductions are a must with the feline species! She hasn't spent any time with children, but with her high energy, we think that she will do best with older children. She would make an excellent hiking or running partner for an active owner. Foster mom says that she exercises Liza an average of an hour a day, and after that'|.Liza might think about resting! And you should know that Liza can be a very aggressive snuggler! She absolutely loves to cuddle, and the only nippiness the family has seen has come when she is kissing their ears and chin in her joy at being cuddled! She is learning the ropes of the house, and foster mom has been impressed with how much she has learned in such a short time. Liza is nothing if she is not a quick learner. Foster mom has been amazed at how eager Liza is to please the people of the house. If you meet Liza and see the affection, the eagerness to please, the joyful, playful, bouncy, fun loving girl she is, you will find that she is worth the bit of effort it may take to bring out the confident dog that's in there! PIease Read Before Adopting a Dog in Vermont
Dogs can make good pets in Vermont if they match your IifestyIe. Dogs have a reputation for being "man's best friend" for excellent reasons. Dogs are wonderful companions. Many breeds, in addition to being affectionate, devoted members of the family, are useful working dogs and guardians. Most dogs form tight bonds with their humans, and need to be cared for like the valuable family members they are. But sadly, some owners do not live up to the responsibility and involvement it takes to properly care for a dog throughout its life. Dogs can become the victims of neglect or active abuse. Some dogs receive tender, attentive care from their owners, but no longer have a home after their owner passes away or experiences a major life event that makes him unable to keep his dog. There are many more dogs than there are homes for dogs, and dogs that are not spayed or neutered can accidentally produce large numbers of puppies, exacerbating overpopulation. For this reason, three to four million dogs, many of them perfectly healthy and wonderful animals, are euthanized in the U.S. each year.

Many people get excited about owning a new dog, decide to get a puppy, and then pick one out at a pet shop or visit a breeder with a new litter. However, there are so many wonderful, friendly dogs in need of adoption, including puppies and purebreds. Some of these dogs might even be a better fit for a family than a new puppy; for instance, some adult dogs in need of adoption are already housebroken and obedience trained. Adoption is typically much less expensive than purchasing a dog. People who adopt dogs find the experience extremely rewarding, bond very closely with their dogs, and have the added satisfaction of knowing that one less animal has to be euthanized. If your family is ready for a canine companion, please consider adopting a dog!

lnteresting Dog Trivia Low-Cost Vermont Spay & Neuter Clinics
All dogs, even cute little lap dogs, are ultimately descended from domesticated wolves. There are hundreds of dog breeds with extremely varied characteristics and sizes, from the tiniest teacup Chihuahua to the hugest Mastiff, but all of these breeds make up just one species Canis lupus familiaris and can theoretically breed with one another (although there can be practical and health related constraints.) The dog was the earliest domesticated animal. Dogs are red-green colorblind.
