German Shepherd Mix    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

This friendly dog is Hobo. His elderly owner passed away leaving him alone in the yard. Neighbors noticed him and contacted a group of volunteers in the area who work diligently to rescue dogs and cats. When they were informed of Hobo's situation they jumped into action. Hobo is about 7 years old and weighs about 80 lbs. The only shelters in the area are high kill and, due to his age and large size, he wouldn't ever walk out. In an effort to save him, the volunteers reached out to us to rescue. I'm thrilled to share, this handsome pup is coming to VT. He is already neutered & will be brought up to date on his vaccines before he ... (Read More)comes to us. He did a great job on his temperament testing with dogs, cats and kids. Hobo is a lovebug and still has a lot of spring in his step. He is super friendly and enjoys playing fetch. Video posted here. Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier Mix    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

There are many spiritual writings on Faith. Mother Teresa said, 'Be faithful in small things because it is in them that your strength lies.' But it was George Michael who sang, 'Cause I gotta have Faith-I gotta have Faith- 'Cause I gotta have Faith, Faith - 'Cause I gotta have Faith, Faith, Faith-ah' Our Faith is a 16lb 1-2 year-old female Terrier-mix. She is spayed, vaccinated and micro-chipped. She is housetrained and nearly crate-trained. She walks wearing a harness. Faith is a little shy but a lot affectionate, a little skittish but very well-behaved. Her foster mother says she is learning to come to her name and is wildly intelligent. ... (Read More)Faith loves to chew rawhide and bully stick treats. She is a wonderful go with the flow, kind of girl . . . calm and content inside, and when out in the yard she will run and run. She will follow her people wherever they go and when they stop, she's ready with a kiss. In fact, Faith is the smoochiest dog on the planet. Faith loves the one-year-old puppy she lives with. When meeting other dogs, she needs more time get comfortable. Faith has not met children yet but would probably be fine with older respectful children. Faith is shy when first meeting new people, but she couldn't be any sweeter if she tried. Rescue Me ID: 16-12-05-00523Sugar (female)

Chihuahua Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Not Good w/ Other Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Average Energy
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

When Sugar first came to her foster home, she was frozen with fear. But her foster family proved to be trustworthy, stable, patient, and kind. In time, Sugar began to walk about their home freely. Eventually, she made her way onto their laps. Sugar is most fearful of small children and will even growl at dolls. Therefore, Sugar needs a home with older respectful children or adults. Sugar discourages other dogs from interacting with her, so a home where she is the only dog would be best. She ignores the cat, so we think she could cohabitate with one (or more). Sugar is housetrained. She likes to sleep in her crate with the door open. Sugar ... (Read More)continues to work on building trust and confidence and learning social cues. Sugar would like to find a nice lap to melt in. Sugar is a 6.8lb 4-year-old female Chihuahua-mix. Animal ID: 0949Victoria (female)

Australian Shepherd Mix    Age: Senior

Compatibility: Good w/ Male Dogs Only, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Very Low Energy, Somewhat Dominant
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current, Arthritis

Victoria is a beautiful Aussie Husky mix with stunning blue eyes. She is a gorgeous older gal (the vet believes around 10 years) who is looking for a perfect retirement home. Victoria has come a long way learning how to trust people. She will still bark at new people who come into the house but does well giving space. She is very slow to warm up to people and so will need an owner who is dog savvy and can give her the time and space that she needs. She bonds much more quickly with men as her previous owner was an older man but given time she will bond with any adult who has patience with her. She would prefer a home that is quiet and without ... (Read More)children. Once she has learned to trust you though she is very loving and wants nothing more than to be able to sit with you and get scratches and loving. She does well with other dogs that are not super energetic and doesn't seem to mind cats, chickens or other poultry. As long as they are mellow and don't jump on her or get too rough she is okay with that. Victoria does have a small cyst on her bottom and some hip and vision problems, but now that she has gotten settled neither seem to bother her very much. With regular supplements she is able to get around fine and will even play. She absolutely loves squeaky toys of any kind and loves to throw them over her head and chase them around. Victoria could be the perfect dog for someone who would love a companion but doesn't really want to be super active. She is fine with going out 2 or 3 times a day and just hanging out and being your side kick the rest of the day. Rescue Me ID: 16-11-16-00012LIZA (female)

Lab Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Liza is a diamond in the rough,' says foster mom. Now, this may turn you off immediately, but if it doesn't, please take the time to read this through and learn a bit about a dog who has a boatload of upside and just needs some patience and time. Liza came to us recently, and she's been in her foster home for about a week. Foster mom says that she has made marked improvements in her household manners in just a week's time. We will say this about Liza: She is very eager to be with her people. It seems like Liza attaches quickly to her caregiver, and there are times that she needs to be reminded that she can have a life of her own! ;) She's ... (Read More)learning that her people aren't going to disappear, and she can relax even if they aren't right there. Liza is a 4 year old, 52 pound lab mix. She was recently treated for heartworm, and she has been restored to full health. She's a high energy girl who loves to run, loves to walk, loves to play fetch'|loves to move! She is almost completely house trained, crate trained, and she walks well on a leash. She knows sit and come, and she has an excellent recall (especially if you have a ball!), she also is very close to understanding 'stay.' She's very eager to play with other dogs, and she has shown no aggression over food or toys. She's okay with cats, but she may make cats and their owners nervous because she has a decent prey drive. She hasn't spent any time with children, but with her high energy, we think that she will do best with older children. She would make an excellent hiking or running partner for an active owner. Foster mom says that she exercises Liza an average of an hour a day, and after that'|.Liza might think about resting! And you should know that Liza can be a very aggressive snuggler! She absolutely loves to cuddle, and the only nippiness the family has seen has come when she is kissing their ears and chin in her joy at being cuddled! But even this behavior has been curbed over the last week. She is learning the ropes of the house, and foster mom has been impressed with how much she has learned in such a short time. Foster mom has been amazed at how eager Liza is to please the people of the house. Liza is a work in progress, but we think that when you meet her and see the affection, the eagerness to please, the joyful, playful, bouncy, fun loving girl she is, you will find that she is worth the bit of effort it may take to bring out the confident dog that's in there! Rescue Me ID: 16-11-03-00009Percy (male)

Newfoundland Mix    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs
Personality: Low Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current, Arthritis

'He is a joy. I have been so blessed to have him here, and I have no problem with him living his life out here, but by chance there's someone else out there that he can bond with, I want to give him that opportunity. To watch him learn to grow and trust, to be playful and silly with the dogs has been an amazing experience.. To see a dog that was so.shut down they (shelter staff) said he had no personality, come to life and enjoy it is something words can't describe..' We thought foster mom's words would be the best introduction. Percy came to us four months ago, snatched from death's door. He was so shy and fearful that he spent the first ... (Read More)stint of his stay at his foster home'|in the bathroom, huddled between the toilet and the tub. But, friends, that was four months ago, and with the patience of a saint and the gentleness of a nurse, foster mom (and her pack-- she would never leave them out!) have seen this gentle, shy, quiet, old soul come to life. Percy is a Newfoundland mix who is between 65-70 pounds. He's about 8 %BD years old, and he's house trained, just about crate trained, and walks well on a leash. He's a low energy guy who does suffer from skin allergies (controlled with food and prednisone) and a bit of arthritis. He's missing some teeth, and he hides from children'|.but'|.he LOVES other dogs! Foster mom is pretty sure her pack of three dogs has done as much for Percy as all the tender, loving care and good food have done for him. She would insist that Percy go to a home with dogs who will keep him company. He does love to walk and to play, and he's even started swimming in the pond at his foster home. He's not destructive and he's a bit of an independent fellow as far as a lot of human affection goes. Foster mom thinks that a patient, caring person could probably draw him even further from his shell, but she stresses the patient part. Percy has rewarded foster mom greatly for her efforts, but it was not a short process! He's no trouble, though, and his gentle, quiet temperament makes him a joy to have in the home. He's embraced all the foster dogs that have come and gone, and really, his new home will be the place where an old soul can put up their feet and enjoy the gentle walks and pleasant play of those golden years of life. Rescue Me ID: 16-11-02-00555Hope (female)

Pit Bull Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

What's in a name? Well, Hope certainly has a lot in her name, and the name given her fits her perfectly. Hope is a young girl who's been in some 'hope-less' situations. She's no more than 1-2 years old, and she has already had her first litter and been dropped at a shelter. Now, if you're not familiar with shelters south of us, let us tell you, this is a dangerous place for a mom and babies'|not because the folks aren't loving and caring, but because little ones don't have the immunities that adults do. It can be very rough on them. Thankfully, Hope caught the eye of our rescuers, and she and her little ones were scooped up and whisked to ... (Read More)safety. Hope is now waiting for a home of her own, and from what we can tell, that's a pleasure she probably hasn't enjoyed much in her young life. She's just a little girl, probably a Plott/Pitt mix, weighing in at 30 pounds. She's a medium energy lady, and she's friendly with dogs and cats. She's met children and showed interest, but she's not tried to engage them in play. She is relatively uninterested in chickens, but small wild animals will get her attention. She's learning sit and 'load up' to get in the car. She walks well on her leash, and she will come when called if someone calls and makes a bit of a dash in the opposite direction. She loves the 'game' of coming, and that means she will probably pick up her true recall with some patience and time. Hope is house trained, but she will take a bit of work to be crate trained. She is fine to be left in the house for about half a day. She does love to chew, so that's something that keeps foster mom on her toes! Hope is a dog that is learning to live with people, and that can take some time. Foster mom says that she thinks Hope would do wonderfully in a home with another dog, and she thinks she'd do well with someone who was home a bit more than their family has been. Foster mom describes Hope as playful, well behaved, and puppy like, but she also has moments of shyness, fearfulness, and a bit of uncertainty. She shows no food aggression at all, and she's very quiet around the house. She is not a howler or a loud barker, but she will bark softly to alert the family if someone comes to the house. Hope is a beautiful girl who's had some hark luck, but we think that's all turning around for her now, and we're going to be so happy to see her settled into a home of her own! Rescue Me ID: 16-09-13-00346Roam (male)

Rhodesian Ridgeback Mix    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Not Good with Other Dogs, Good with Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Average Energy, Somewhat Dominant
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current, Aggressive, Fearful/Anxious

My husband and I are desperately seeking options to re-home our beloved dog Roam ASAP. We have met with our vet, and will need to put him to sleep come 9/24 if we have no other options =(. We have been working so hard to find a place to take on our Roam and adopt him out to another final forever home. Sadly, we have been in contact with many rescues over the past several months, and all have been either full or unable to take on another dog with behavioral struggles. Roam is our 5 1/2 year old Rhodesian Ridgeback mix who is struggles with anxiety (especially around kids and unpredictable situations), unfamiliar people coming to his ... (Read More)home, and dog aggression. We have had him since he was 8 weeks old, and originally rescued him from an SPCA shelter in Lakeland, Florida. My husband and I are having a baby soon, so we are trying to find him a new place to call home ASAP. He is was 76.8 lbs as of 7/2016, is up to date on all his shots, he is neutered, and is in great physical health aside from his anxiety. While he has always struggled with being territorial around the house & toys (places/things he deems to be 'his'), over the last year and a half he has become more anxious & dog aggressive and had begun to snip and show aggressive tendencies towards people. He has not bitten a human, but has bitten 5-6 dogs - with the worst outcome being about 8 stitches. As we noticed his anxiety and aggression mounting, we immediately started working with a behaviorist, and then afterwards we discovered a program called Sit Means Sit and started even more intensive training with them. He has also excelled at every other obedience training class he has ever participated in, although he did struggle being in group classes with other dogs. The past year and a half has been a lot of work towards rehabilitation, but sadly our boy is still struggling and we are running out of time. He does take 40mg of Prozac every day that seems to take the edge off his anxiety, but he can still be very reactive in triggering situations. We have worked so hard to help him, but the situation isn't working and its heartbreaking. At this point, knowing that he cannot be around kids, and with a baby on the way, we feel like we are running our of time and need to find him another option ASAP. Roam is such a beautiful boy. He is loyal to a fault, protective, LOVES to hike and play fetch, enjoys snuggling, camping, traveling, and swims like a fish. He doesn't do well at dog parks though - he gets too anxious. We wish we could keep him for the rest of his life!! Sadly, we feel we cannot for his sanity and for our daughter's safety. He would do exceptionally well in a stable house with a calm couple who has dog experience, with good outdoor space, and likes to spend time outside (a farm maybe??). Roam absolutely adores his humans, and generally just wants to be wherever we are - whether hiking or swimming, or laying on the couch (when invited!). PLEASE HELP!! Thank you so much for your time! P.S. He LOVES horses! We lived on a farm with a few horses in 2014 and he loved chasing them and rolling in their dung as often as possible =P. (Less)

We'd like to introduce you to Pierce, a fun loving, medium sized bull dog mix with sweet, soulful eyes and a joyful, playful, affectionate personality. At 1-2 years old he still has some of his puppy energy (which bubbles up in some wild scampering through the house at times), but for the most part he's the kind of guy who likes to relax with his foster family. He loves a nice walk every day to help him use up some energy, like most dogs do. He takes his walks with a harness, and occasionally he does need to be reminded not to pull when he sees something really great, like a rabbit or another dog. He has learned to sit, and he gets to do ... (Read More)that often to help him make sure he knows how important it is to pay attention to foster mom. What two year old doesn't need a little direction at times? With patience and practice he's turning into a real sitting champ! Pierce is generally a quiet boy, but he will bark to warn you if someone is at the door. He is crate trained, and spends his time there when his foster family is out. Pierce likes older kids, but with his bouts of energy, he might be a little much for younger children. 'In many ways he really is just a big, sweet baby with a squishy face, especially when he is sleeping; he makes sweet noises of contentment,' foster mom says. She feels that Pierce is going to make a wonderful companion to his people when he finds his forever home. Foster mom thinks that Pierce would do well in a home with folks who would continue his training and who have some prior experience with dogs. We would recommend a house without cats for this youngster. Pierce is a 1-2 month old bull dog mix. He weighs in at 45 pounds. He's neutered, microchipped, and is current on all vaccines. He knows 'sit', and he's almost housetrained. If you're looking for a partner for your next adventure, you might have found your dog! You might notice that I have a rather significant overbite that results from issues with my mandible and nasopharyngeal area and can cause some breathing difficulties from time to time. I have a prescription for two medications that I take only as needed-which is rarely. My people are happy to share more information with anyone interested in adopting me. It's just most important that I avoid becoming over-heated. I wear a 'Sense-ation' harness when walking. I have mastered, ... (Read More)'Sit,' 'Wait' and 'Down'. I sit and wait for my meals. So, now, I am learning, 'Leave It' and 'Off.' I am a happy puppy at heart. Sometimes, I am tempted by socks . . . but other than those wonderfully smelly garments, I don't bother my peoples' belongings. I do enjoy all manner of dog toys and chews. I like to play with them by myself, with people-friends, or with dog-friends, like me. My foster-sister, Libby and I are presently engaged in a never-ending war, called 'tug.' Even though people call it 'war,' its just play for us and we don't care who wins. I get along famously with quite a menagerie of dogs at my foster home . . . there is just one rather outspoken old man who is gruff with all of us, but I am learning to give him a wide-berth. Though no children live here, several visit regularly. They range from ages 8 to 14 and with slow respectful introductions I am very comfortable around them and rather enjoy being loved by them. I do recall that when younger children would rush at a dog I was frightened. When my people are away during the day, I stay in my crate. I complain a little at first, because I would much rather be with my people-friends or dog-friends, but I quiet down soon enough. I have been called, a lover and player, delightful, a sweet boy, and sometimes, a 'space-invader,' because I LOVE to snuggle. I am affectionate, eager to please and well-behaved. When I first meet new people, I can be a little standoffish-I do best if they just ignore me and allow me to approach them when I am ready. If you give me a little space when we first meet, I will be happy to 'invade your space' and give you love, if you let me.     Up for adoption: Flor. This stunning girl can be adopted in New England. We think she may be a a Great Pyrenees / Lab mix who is about one year or so old and about 85lbs. She is learning leash walking daily and has a very healthy appetite! She is a big, loveable baby that loves belly rubs. She would love to have a home with another dog or dogs. Boxer Mix    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Up for adoption: Dexter. What a cutie! He can be adopted in New England. Dexter is adorable. He was surrendered to a high kill shelter in Texas with a black lab, most likely because the owner could not afford the two dogs anymore. At Lucky Lab if a dog comes in with a pal, we don't leave the other one behind. That's why we have this 'not-so-lab-like' but cute as a button pup! We think he may be a boxer-mix? Possibly a bull dog mix? Dexter is outgoing and friendly. He's good with other dogs, people and loves to play. He is about 9 months to one year old and weighs about 50lbs. Dexter is neutered, fully vaccinated, microchipped, crate and ... (Read More)house trained too ! Apply at www.luckylabrescue.com (Less)

He has been fostered with many other dogs and has gotten along great with all of them but does not do well in dog parks. He does show a high prey drive towards cats and can not reside in a household with them.

PIease Read Before Adopting a Dog in Vermont
Dogs can make good pets in Vermont if they match your IifestyIe. Dogs have a reputation for being "man's best friend" for excellent reasons. Dogs are wonderful companions. Many breeds, in addition to being affectionate, devoted members of the family, are useful working dogs and guardians. Most dogs form tight bonds with their humans, and need to be cared for like the valuable family members they are. But sadly, some owners do not live up to the responsibility and involvement it takes to properly care for a dog throughout its life. Dogs can become the victims of neglect or active abuse. Some dogs receive tender, attentive care from their owners, but no longer have a home after their owner passes away or experiences a major life event that makes him unable to keep his dog. There are many more dogs than there are homes for dogs, and dogs that are not spayed or neutered can accidentally produce large numbers of puppies, exacerbating overpopulation. For this reason, three to four million dogs, many of them perfectly healthy and wonderful animals, are euthanized in the U.S. each year.

Many people get excited about owning a new dog, decide to get a puppy, and then pick one out at a pet shop or visit a breeder with a new litter. However, there are so many wonderful, friendly dogs in need of adoption, including puppies and purebreds. Some of these dogs might even be a better fit for a family than a new puppy; for instance, some adult dogs in need of adoption are already housebroken and obedience trained. Adoption is typically much less expensive than purchasing a dog. People who adopt dogs find the experience extremely rewarding, bond very closely with their dogs, and have the added satisfaction of knowing that one less animal has to be euthanized. If your family is ready for a canine companion, please consider adopting a dog!
