Lab Mix    Age: Young Puppy

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults

Health: Needs to be Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Jamie is an adorable 3-4 month old, super sweet puppy who weighs about 16 lbs. We rescued her from a high kill shelter in AL. We do not provide DNA testing which is the only way to know which breeds are mixed in the pups. However, our thoughts include Shepherd, Lab, Golden Retriever and Border Collie. Jamie is being fostered with an awesome VT family who runs the Animal House of New England. She is able to play with dogs of all ages/sizes and gets along great with everyone. Jamie sleeps well through the night and is working on her housebreaking & crate training skills. She's at a great age to master both in her new home. She is ... Although she enjoys playing, Jamie is more of a cuddler. - Playful - Loves to cuddle - Eager to please - Fine tuning her housebreaking & crate training skills - Enjoys playing with dogs and people - Has not been spayed yet * *Based on current veterinary recommendations, these pups have not been spayed or neutered due to their young age.     Please meet Amber, Amber came to me from Cleveland TN she was living in a hoarding breeding situation and ended up in a kill shelter in Cleveland TN. She had very little hair on her body and sores from head to toe. She traveled all the way from Cleveland TN to Vermont with her best friend Jenny. Amber like Jenny ... (Read More)was so scared when she first arrived, they had never been held, loved or had a toy heck their feet never touched grass. Chihuahua Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Jenny came to me from Cleveland TN from a hoarding breeding situation. They ended up in Cleveland TN kill shelter. Jenny had very little hair on her body and covered in sores from head to toe. I found that she had a long term yeast and fungal infection which also caused secondary infections. As you can see from her picture she has healed very nicely. When they first arrive her and Amber where so scared, you see they have never been held, never touched their feet on the ground, never had love nor any toys. All that is behind them. Of course when you first meet them they are shy and scared and rightfully so, but they warm up quickly and ... (Read More)what great joy they are from there. Jenny is my wild little lady, she can scale any gate better than a ninja, she is full of life and loves to play games on the other dogs, she loves taking Amber's toys and running away with them and play catch me if you can game. Eventually Amber gets them back but what a fun time she has trying to get them Jenny is the one you would invite to a party because she for sure would keep everyone going. She has also learned to love to be held and she will kiss you all over when you first get home and at bed time. She will make someone a wonderful companion and you would not need a TV with her around she will give you hours of entertainment. Jenny and Amber lived together in horror, they traveled from Cleveland TN to Vermont together, and they both healed together. I would love nothing more than to see them adopted together to live the rest of their lives in happiness with love. Please consider adopting Jenny with her best friend Amber. You will not regret it they are two different personalities and get along very well. Thank you and I do look forward to hearing from you. (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 17-11-21-00412Winston (male)

Chihuahua    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Cats, Good with Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

This is Winston. Winston is a 12-15lb 3-4 year-old male Chihuahua. He is neutered, vaccinated and micro-chipped. And, this is Winston's story: I tried to declare war on them and behave as a lawful enemy combatant when they first captured me. If they tried to touch me I would attempt to bite them. If they picked me up against my will, I would deliver my most blood-curdling of screams and release my defense-mechanism, 'hot urine.' When your namesake is Sir Winston Churchill you have to be a strong character to live up to it. And, I am quite a character. But, I appear to have met my match with this foster-family . . . I just couldn't put them ... (Read More)off. They were patient. They gave me space and time to adjust. Even their dog savvy grandchildren, who often visit, knew what to do-they moved slowly around me-they never startled me. The entire family treated me with the utmost of respect. And, they gave me unconditional love. So, eventually my defenses fell away. And, I have become quite fond of the ladies in the household. I tolerate the man of the house and have learned to trust him. Therefore, I will allow him to pat me, as long as he doesn't try to pick me up. But, I am still leery of the male species, in general. I prefer females, and will even approach them of my own accord to accept gentle pats. I adore the warmth and comfort of the home. I am almost housetrained, I am a good aim on pee pads inside and I do my business outdoors 2-3 times a day . . . but I do not like to linger outside. I am crate-trained and so-so walking on leash. I am smart as a whip and will respond to several commands when I am in the mood. I know: 'Come,' 'Stay,' 'Down' and 'Sit.' I have been described as: affectionate, joyful and well-behaved, but at times, I am shy, fearful, skittish and standoffish. I get along well with the other dog that lives here and I ignore the cat. Outdoors, they have these gargantuan creatures they call, 'Cows.' I remain convinced that these Cows are plotting a murderous attack and I warn my people with loud barks of alert every time I see them. My people clearly fail to understand the danger they are in. But fear not, humans, I Winston am persistent in my resolve! My foster father said that I would not be a good match for anyone with toddlers and if you have children at all, they should be respectful and dog savvy . . . actually, anyone thinking about adopting me should understand the quirky 'snarky' attitudes that Chihuahuas often have-especially when they have a history of humans mistreating them. I believe it was Sir Winston Churchill, who said: 'Success is not final, future is not fatal; it is the courage to continue that counts.' And, I am nothing if not courageous . . . I will, carry on. German Shepherd Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Zena, Warrior Princess, in training . . . Zena is a 40lb 4 %BD year-old female Shepherd-mix. She is spayed, vaccinated and micro-chipped. Zena is a quiet, contemplative, well-behaved, and affectionate, but shy and skittish dog. Zena languished in the kennel of an animal shelter for over 6 months. Repeatedly being passed by due to her shy quiet nature. But this wallflower is beginning to blossom in her new foster home where she lives with an adult, one cat and one dog. There are no children in her foster home, and small children would likely startle her. But older well-behaved children should be fine. Zena seems to be a deep-thinker and ... (Read More)assesses situations. She is housetrained, knows, 'Come,' and 'Go Potty' is working on learning additional language/commands. She seems to have had no prior leash training. So, her foster mom is using a training-collar with her because she tends to pull and easily startles. Indoors, Zena is trusted with free-roam, but also has a crate, which she often sleeps in. When her person is home, she enjoys sitting next to her on the sofa, being petted and even giving occasional kisses. She is non-reactive with the cat and doesn't even try to steal her food. She's not yet playing with the other dog, but she shares toys easily and has zero food aggression. Although, she may harbor some ill will towards squeaky-toys, and she is very adept in separating each squeaker from its toy. Like a hidden door to a secret garden, Zena's soul awaits unlocking. Anyone reading this note could hold the key! It is not so mysterious. All is takes is patience and kindness, consistency and trust. Zena will never be fierce like a warrior, nor should she. However, she has the potential to be fiercely loving and fiercely loyal to the one who unlocks her heart. And, she has the potential to be a more relaxed, less fearful and therefore a happier and more Zen-like version of herself. Help Zena find her Zen! Chihuahua Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: High Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Hello Everyone, my name is Jenny, I am the pretty black and tan lady, Amber is shy so we voted and decided it was best if I told you our story. We are not sure how we got so lucky to come to Shonio's Safe Haven, Inc but we sure are thankful everyday we have been here. You see we come from Cleveland TN, our human used us for breeding and they took our babies away every time we would have some. We lived in horrible conditions. I hear human say we came from a hoarding/breed situation but I just call it awful. Our bodies hurt so much we had fleas all over us and we had a very bad Yeast and Fungal infection from the environment we lived in. ... (Read More)We never had a human touch us and we never have been outside in the grass to play. We had no toys nor did anyone loves us. Then we went into a kill shelter in TN and they said no one would want us we had no hair and our bodies where is such bad shape. Then a lady came in and said I know Suzie would take these girls and off we went. It was all scary but we finally landed in Vermont with Suzie through Shonio's Safe Have, Inc. While we have been here we have had medical treatment and no more itching, we are even growing hair, we have toys everywhere and we are aloud to play when ever we want. Suzie said it is time for us to find a family I am not sure what a family is and we love Suzie and all the fun we are having here but she said we would be happier with our own family, not sure how much more happiness we can take but we sure would like to try it. I will let Suzie tell you more about us and we can't wait to meet you family.. Hello Suzie here, These ladies were a mess when they came to me and I do have pictures to share with their family upon request. These ladies have shown such a will to live and they are willing to leave the past in the past. They have been treated for their yeast and fungal infection and still have daily treatments but they are on the mend and the hair is coming in nicely. Lady Jenny the black and tan lady is a charter she loves to take Lady Amber's toys and run around with them so Lady Amber has to chase her to get them back.. Jenny is lively she can jump a baby gate from a sitting position or scale it like a ninja in the night.. She is full of life. Lady Amber is truly a lady, well until Jenny runs off with her toys lol, but totally sweet as can be. They love to be with their human but are okay during the day to be alone as well. I would love nothing more to see them go together they have been through so much together I would love to see them stay as a family unit. I am willing to speak about splitting them up but it is my dream to see them stay together. I do believe they would be fine separated however the adjustment time in a new home make take longer. Its time for a family to take them to a new lever of love and to watch them blossom, is that you, if so contact our rescue and we would be happy to tell you all that we know about them. Thank you for you time and reading this long thread. We are looking forward to hearing from you (Less)

Staffordshire Bull Terrier    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Not Good w/ Other Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Low Energy, Very Dominant
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Blue is the biggest love you'll ever meet. He's loyal and so affectionate and thinks he's a lap dog although he's a stocky 75lbs. Blue is very dominate in that he rules the roost. I call him Mufasa because he will sit on his perch (an old wooden chest) and watch the 2 small dogs we have at home. If he has even a crumb of his food left he will run to his bowl and gobble it up..non aggressively, just showing whos boss. He was rescued from a high kill shelter and was 42 lbs when I brought him home, before the shelter took him in he was used as a bait dog for dog fighting. He has a few scars but the worst scars are on his trust for other ... (Read More)animals. He does not like other dogs and is always on the defensive side when meeting them. It will go ok for a minute of two but if they turn the wrong way he will attack. This is believed to be because he was constantly being attacked. He loves my male dacshund for some reason but I wouldnt feel ok adopting him to anyone with another dog. We have 2 cats and he will play chase but is easily redirected verbally. He is very food oriented and will respond to almost any command with a treat. Even without one he is eager to please and knows sit, no, lay down, paw and roll over. He is litterally the best dog I've ever met, so loyal and protects his family...I am rehoming him because my neaderthal neighbor feels threatened by pitbulls and is constantly making complaints to the town saying he's a vicious dog. The landlord hates pitbulls and claims she can't get insurance on the house if he's there. It's a constant battle and he deserves security. If I didn't have kids at home him and I would run away and live in a tent! Please email me or call if you have any questions..he is a pocket pitty so he's short and stocky..solid..and he's very healthy. I hate even writting this because he's my love. I hope I can find someone who will love him as much as I do! (Less)

Meet Angela, or as her foster mom calls her, 'Bella Ella,' . . . because she is so beautiful. Angela is a 55lb 3 %BD year-old female Hound-mix. She is spayed, vaccinated and micro-chipped. Angela is one of the sweetest, kindest, most gentle souls on the planet. Sadly, humans were not kind to Angela in her past so Angela is shy and standoffish when first meeting new people. But, once you earn Angela's trust, she trusts you fully, and once you earn her love, she loves you truly. She does not live with children now and small loud children would probably terrify her, but she does not have an aggressive bone in her body. Angela loves animals of ... Angela is playful with other dogs and likes to nap with them, too. She has not met cats, but she is gentle and curious and would not harm a fly. She is housetrained, crate-trained and trusted with free-roam with the rest of the dogs in the home. Angela is good in the car. She walks well on leash, and a slip lead is helpful to ensure that she won't slip out of her collar. Angela, Bella-Ella is gorgeous, inside and out. She has been with her foster mom long enough to have made huge strides. Each day her shyness melts away. She loves snuggles and pets to her velvety coat. She has rediscovered, or perhaps discovered for the first time, her happiness-her doggyness. She is fairly quiet, except when she is happy-like when her mom comes home from work, she is greeted with a joyful little 'WoooWoooWooo!' baying sound and that is all. Now, all she needs is a family to be patient, kind and consistent-and this gem of a dog will shine like the Hope diamond-just as priceless, only more precious. Whether you call her Angela, Bella-Ella, or just, plain Ella, this angelic girl is ready to call you her best-friend, forever. Pippa's favorite place to be is outdoors! A fenced yard to run and play would be ideal since she loves being outside, exploring, and chasing squirrels. She of loads of energy to play, but can calm down easily when it's not play time. Not a fussy eater or food aggressive. She would do best as an only dog, as she likes to be the center of attention. Boxer Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Not Good w/ Cats, Good w/ Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Average Energy
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Beautiful and loyal 2 %BD year old Karma is looking for a very special family to call her own. She is a 60 pound Boxer mix who enjoys cuddling up with her people as much as she loves going out for walks daily. Karma has mastered home living skills such as crate training, potty training, staying off counters, waiting patiently for her meals, etc. since arriving in foster care. She gets along well with her chi mix buddy who is 12 pounds as well as her other foster fur sibling who is a 45 pound pit mix. She has shown tremendous growth on leash and can be successful with oncoming dogs, people, bikers, and prey when guided by a confident and ... (Read More)dog savvy handler. Her ideal home should be one with no cats or rodent type pets due to her strong prey drive. In addition to a cat and rodent free home, homes with chickens and farm animals would not be the best fit for her either. We are also suggesting a home without children because she can be quite sensitive to others' energy and it can be difficult to help her settle down with kids coming in and out frequently. She is quite a jumper and can clear a four foot fence without a running start so supervision outside will be very important for her. Karma can be protective of her people so when meeting new humans and dogs, both inside and outside her home, she needs to be on leash and supported by her handler until she becomes comfortable and familiar with the new interactions. Once comfortable, Karma is affectionate, calm, and an amazingly gentle companion. Her foster family describes her as the most loving and sensitive foster dog they have met through the Rescue. They adore her and are committed to helping her adoptive family with ongoing assistance to help ensure a smooth transition from their home. This support will include visits before the adoption, walk training, and helping to address any questions that may arise. Karma is spayed, up to date on her vaccinations, and eager to meet her forever family. Probably no on smaller kids too, she like to herd a little too much. She came from DAS the same day as Lucy. She was insane to contain in the car but has gotten much better since. Rescue Me ID: 17-09-19-00052Paulie (female)

Bull Terrier    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Not Good w/ Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Paulie is a very sweet and gentle girl. We suspect some abuse and certainly neglect given her physical condition when we rescued her. Paulie had surgery on one ear and the resulting scar tissue causes that ear to droop. We think that it gives her character. Paulie is awesome with people of all sizes. She will put her head under your arm and moan while being petted. She is on a non grain/non poultry diet and should be for life. Paulie would do well as an only dog and no cats. Bull Terrier    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Not Good w/ Other Dogs, Not Good w/ Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Pearl is such a beautiful and fun dog. She is a typical English Bull Terrier, high energy but able to settle and sleep, always ready for play time. Pearl loves to chase balls and just explore the yard. Pearl is exposed to other dogs throughout the day. We have not found her to be reactive, however this was given as the reason for her surrender. She pulls a bit while walking on the leash but I suspect she simply has not be taught how to walk properly. Pearl is very good to handle. She has no food or toy guarding and is not a tail chaser as many EBT are. Pearly will do well in a home as an only pet and with folks who are active.

Rescue Me ID: 17-09-04-00021Dana (female)

Flat-Coated Retriever Mix    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Not Good w/ Cats, Good w/ Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: High Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Dana is a beautiful 40 pound retriever mix. She was listed as a one year old, and from what the foster parents initially observed, did not appear to have had much structure or guidance. Dana is a smart girl, and so eager to learn and please, which has made her time at the foster home extremely productive and gratifying. Nothing makes Dana happier then to have a job; she's all focus. She is a high energy pup who is up for any adventure and will do best with daily exercise. She loves a good game of fetch, and has been enjoying her daily swims in the river. She can tend to be highly excitable, so working and talking with her in a calming ... (Read More)manner is key. With that being said, she has made great progress in calming herself. A good bone, or squeaky toy for her to put her attention has helped. Due to Dana's energy, excitability, and strength levels, her foster parents are not thinking cats or young children are a good match for her at this time. But she has been around some older, respectful, dog savvy children, and just loves the attention. She does very well in her crate, using it at night and when she is left alone. Dana is currently residing with a 9 year old Golden Retriever, and they get along fine. Dana would most likely do best with other dogs who enjoy playing. With lower energy pups, she would need more careful introductions, as not all dogs will appreciate her joyful exuberance! Dana will grab shoes or socks for attention. Dana is working on 'leaving it,' and has made good progress. Dana is an affectionate pup who enjoys a good rub down, snuggle, or belly scratch and who loves the attention that goes with it. Day by day, Dana continues to grow into her full potential. With consistent guidance, boundaries, and direction from a confident leader, Dana will thrive and continue on to be her very best self and a wonderful companion. PIease Read Before Adopting a Dog in Vermont
Dogs can make good pets in Vermont if they match your IifestyIe. Dogs have a reputation for being "man's best friend" for excellent reasons. Dogs are wonderful companions. Many breeds, in addition to being affectionate, devoted members of the family, are useful working dogs and guardians. Most dogs form tight bonds with their humans, and need to be cared for like the valuable family members they are. But sadly, some owners do not live up to the responsibility and involvement it takes to properly care for a dog throughout its life. Dogs can become the victims of neglect or active abuse. Some dogs receive tender, attentive care from their owners, but no longer have a home after their owner passes away or experiences a major life event that makes him unable to keep his dog. There are many more dogs than there are homes for dogs, and dogs that are not spayed or neutered can accidentally produce large numbers of puppies, exacerbating overpopulation. For this reason, three to four million dogs, many of them perfectly healthy and wonderful animals, are euthanized in the U.S. each year.

Many people get excited about owning a new dog, decide to get a puppy, and then pick one out at a pet shop or visit a breeder with a new litter. However, there are so many wonderful, friendly dogs in need of adoption, including puppies and purebreds. Some of these dogs might even be a better fit for a family than a new puppy; for instance, some adult dogs in need of adoption are already housebroken and obedience trained. Adoption is typically much less expensive than purchasing a dog. People who adopt dogs find the experience extremely rewarding, bond very closely with their dogs, and have the added satisfaction of knowing that one less animal has to be euthanized. If your family is ready for a canine companion, please consider adopting a dog!

lnteresting Dog Trivia Low-Cost Vermont Spay & Neuter Clinics
All dogs, even cute little lap dogs, are ultimately descended from domesticated wolves. There are hundreds of dog breeds with extremely varied characteristics and sizes, from the tiniest teacup Chihuahua to the hugest Mastiff, but all of these breeds make up just one species Canis lupus familiaris and can theoretically breed with one another (although there can be practical and health related constraints.) The dog was the earliest domesticated animal. Dogs can hear much lower frequencies than humans, over twice as high as humans, and about four times as far as humans.
