Lab Mix    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Very Submissive
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Up for adoption and Texas and New England: meet Lucy! Lucy was found in a field - very pregnant and infested with fleas. Lucky Lab saw the post and knew we had to help her. Within three days, she had five (5) puppies. She was a good mom, and all her puppies have been adopted to loving homes. She is 60 lbs, 1-1/2 - 2 years old, loves to ride in the car, good with kids, adults, and dogs, although she is timid when first meeting other dogs. Once she warms up, she is very playful. She is submissive, so will not try to compete for the alpha position. She has met a few cats, and was curious, but not aggressive. She just stared at them. ... (Read More) The first few months we had Lucy, her tail was always tucked - even when she wagged. Now, her tail stands out like a 'normal' dog, and she has gained so much confidence. She's still a little awkward when she gets excited and she's not a good model (she is quirky - when you try to take her picture, she rolls and moves around, and does everything but pose pretty, although she is gorgeous). If your tone is the slight bit negative, she cowers and retreats to her kennel. It is sad how she frightens so easily, but, she snaps out of it as soon as she realizes she is not in trouble. Her fur is so soft, and she is a great cuddler. She does not bark much, but when she does, it's usually when she is playing with another dog. She loves laying in the yard and hanging out outside. Lucy has never had an accident inside the house. She is dog-door and crate trained. She does need lots of toys to keep her occupied, else, she will make anything she finds her toys. She is now spayed, up-to-date on shots and heartworm medication, flea-free, and ready for a loving home. She will make an outstanding addition to any family. Could that be with you ?     Up for adoption: Dixie! Wowsahs ! She's gorgeous ! She can be adopted in Texas and New England. Dixie is so smart she wanted to write her own bio take it away Dixie: 'Hi - I'm Dixie! Not to brag on myself, but I'm a beautiful, female, black lab who loves to snuggle. I had it a little rough for a while until my foster parents saved me. Because of this I'm a little scared of people I don't know and especially men. Don't worry though, a little love, patience and a nice high 'puppy' voice and I'll be your best friend forever. I'm sweet as can be and love little kids (we have a 4 year old at home) and other dogs - my foster brother and ... (Read More)sister dogs are my best friends! I really think I'd prefer to be in a home where there is another dog for me to spend time with since it helps me to feel more confident in myself. I'm not so great on a leash yet, but I love to go on walks. I tend to get anxiety in my kennel, but since I'm such a good dog, my foster parents have stopped making me go in there and let me lounge around the house when they have to leave. We even have a mamma cat who just had her kittens and I'm really good at just looking and not being a naughty dog with the cats. If I do say so myself, I'm pretty great (my foster parents think so too). I can't wait to find my forever home and spend the rest of my life loving you.' Dixie is 2 years old 50 pounds. She is housebroken, spayed, vaccinated and microchip. She also appears to have no problem living life aboard a boat! Apply at www.luckylabrescue.com (Less)

I was quite the ladies' man in my former life before Lucky Lab got a hold of me and told me that my 'baby making' and 'living outside' days were over!' So yes, Lucky Lab robbed Boomer of his days spent, we believe, being a breeding stud, you can see why he may have been quite sought after. :) We told him he was going to get 'tutored' at the vet... and after that this stud muffin had a career change. Boomer is very quiet; he hardly ever makes a peep. He loves to have ... (Read More)kids and other dogs to play with. His foster mom says he is just a little too curious about cats... so we may want to avoid a forever home with feline friends. He loves to go for walks and play fetch and he loves squeaky toys too! Boomer is about 5-6 years old, we may have mentioned he was neutered :), he's vaccinated and microchipped. Chihuahua Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Not Good with Other Dogs, Good with Most Cats
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Prince would love to be the king of his own castle! Are you looking for a terrier/chi mix? Would you enjoy the company of a small, affectionate, and gentle companion? Prince is 5 years old and weighs in at 9 pounds. He is a bright, medium energy fellow who loves to be with his people. He would do best in a home with other small dogs, since he does like to be the boss and must be reminded that he's not 'top dog'! He responds well to correction, which is fabulous. He's learning sit, and he will potty on command. Foster mom says he's nearly house trained, he's crate trained, and he walks well on his leash. He is crated when the family is not ... (Read More)home, and he does well in his crate. He does well with the pet birds in the home, and foster mom thinks that he would be fine with cats. He hasn't lived with children, but he would probably be okay with older children. He would also do very well as a solo dog. He is very attached to his person and enjoys playing and cuddling with that person, so as long as he had good human company, he would probably be very happy! He isn't loud or nippy, those puppy ways are long behind him. He's very gentle taking his treats, and his favorite thing to do is to cuddle with his people ! Bull Terrier Mix    Age: Young Puppy

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Kitty might seem like a strange name for a 3 month old, 20 pound, terrier mix, but we'd say it fits her pretty well. She's a sweet natured, playful, bright eyed girl who enjoys the company of other dogs, loves the children in her foster home, and is good with cats (though she has learned the 'hard way' that they are a little scratchy). She loves to cuddle with her foster people, and she loves to bounce around the house and play in her joyful, puppy fashion. She's almost house trained, she is almost crate trained (she might whine a little at first-quietly), and she walks very nicely on her leash. She is a fast learner, which will be wonderful ... Lab Mix    Age: Puppy

Heath came to us in pretty rough shape, but after some TLC, you'd never guess this gorgeous, friendly, loveable creature had ever had a bad day! Heath, who foster mom says is as sweet as his name, is a lab mix who is roughly 40 pounds and between 8-10 months old. He's house trained and crate trained, but he needs some leash work. He sits and comes to his name, and foster mom says he hasn't met a dog or person he doesn't love. Foster mom doesn't have children, but she brings all her dogs to the dog park regularly, and she says that Heath is great with the kids he sees there. She says he's not nippy and he is a quiet boy at home. He might ... (Read More)whine for a minute in his crate, but he settles down quickly and rests. Heath loves to snuggle and cuddle, and we think he'd do well in a home with other dogs or in a home with plenty of human affection. Foster mom says that Heath has been wonderfully well behaved in the home. He loves to carry his toys around, and he settles down to rest quickly when he is tired out. He has a wonderful enthusiasm for life, according to foster mom, and she enjoys his joyful, affectionate greetings -and kisses every morning and when she returns from work. Heath-sweet as they come! Pit Bull Mix    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs
Personality: Average Energy

This is Crew. Crew is a 50lb one %BD year-old male Pitbull-mix. He is neutered, vaccinated and micro-chipped. Crew is treat-motivated and knows, Sit. He is nibbler but, takes treats gently. Crew is an affectionate boy who enjoys long snuggles and being a couch potato. He really craves human companionship and easily forms a strong bond with his person. He is trusted with free roam when his person is out. Crew is very playful with other dogs, but wants to be the dominant one and doesn't always read social cues so if another dog acts like they don't want to play Crew might keep trying to engage them.     Hello Everyone My Name is ANDY,,, My humans dumped me on the streets of Manhattan NY,, I was so scared in that BIG City,,, I just kept running looking for a safe place. A Lady picked me up because she said she was afraid for me and it was getting cold.. She brought me to this place called a HIGH KILL SHELTER, Boy was I ever scared in there to. Hearing all the cries of the other dogs, seeing how scared they were and smelling death. The volunteers cried when they talked to me they told me it was my last day, I didn't want to die I love life. I didn't know what that meant but I sure was happy to be leaving that scary place. We drove a long ways and then I meet Suzie. She gave me a hug and said it will be OK little one. Suzie said it is time to find a new family. I got a new family but you see I did not get along with their kitty and they said I was to much for them. I guess they did not enjoy my ZEST for Life or that I didn't know what was expected of me and I was so excited to be in my very own home with everyone. Suzie came and got me and gave me a hug (I love her hugs) and she said its okay little buddy we will find the just right family for you with no kitties this time and someone with maybe a fenced in yard or someone willing to excise me. To my new family I am waiting for you at Suzie's house I hope you find me soon. Now time to hear from Suzie, Can't wait to meet my new family Andy Hello Everyone Suzie here.. Andy may be a senior but this guy has a zest for life he is very active and I am going to recommend a fenced in yard so he can run off that zests. It is not a requirement however due to his energy level he will need to be walked alot. Please no cats.. If there are other animals in the household they will need the zest of life that Andy has otherwise it just will not work. Andy is blind in one eye however that does not slow him down well sometimes he kind of trips on things but he gets right back up and trucks along. Andy needs someone who is willing to be patient with him give him time to settle into the home and learn what is expected of him. This little guy has not had a good life and just needs to learn to trust again. Thank you and I look forward to speaking with you (Less)

Lab Mix    Age: Young Adult

Personality: Average Energy, Very Submissive

Meet Reggie and George-A Bonded Pair Available for Adoption in the Midwest and New England Reggie and George are litter mates and came into Lucky Lab Rescue as owner surrenders. They are very dependent on each other and must be adopted together. We don't know what happened in their previous home, but obviously George and Reggie did not have a lot of human interaction and they were not exposed to any part of human life. They are scared and timid and try desperately to hide behind each other. They turn their backs to the new world, almost hoping that you don't notice them. Which is a shame, because these two are the most loving, sweetest, ... (Read More)gorgeous dogs you will ever meet. It will take several weeks to fully earn your trust, but when you do, they give back in spades. Reggie loves life! He has blossomed in foster care and has really come into his own. Reggie has a habit of going around the house and stealing the toys from the other dogs and taking them into his room where his crate is. However, he is also fine with the other dogs coming and stealing the toys right back. This just adds to the fun. Reggie will steal his way right into your heart. George is a lover and enjoys snuggling up to you on the couch. He is a sucker for a good scratch behind his ears. George is very dependent on his littermate Reggie and will often use Reggie as a shield and will wait for Reggie to take the lead in new situations. We are working on getting George to be more independent and confident. George is slowly coming out of his shell in foster care and is starting to gain confidence. George must have access to his crate 24/7 as he sees his crate as his secure and safe area. He will often go to his crate when he is overwhelmed or when new people enter the house. George enjoys running outside with his numerous 4-legged foster siblings. He loves treats and toys. George is very sweet and gentle and loves to give those awesome doggie kisses. Reggie and George would do best with another confident dog in the house. They are gaining confidence and independence but still depend on each other for support. Reggie and George are two 'homedoggies' and may never be comfortable going to the dog park, or Petco, or even riding in the car. But on the flip side, once they are comfortable in your home they are so loving and so sweet. They give kisses freely. They love to snuggle up on your lap. They live to be petted and loved on!!! Reggie and George are crate trained and house trained. They are neutered, up to date on vaccinations, micro chipped and have been on heartworm/tick preventative. If you might have a special place in your heart for these two sweet boys, please go to www.luckylabrescue.com and fill out an online application indicating your interest in Reggie and George in the notes section. Personality: Average Energy, Very Submissive
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

When Reggie runs he has a bounce in his step and you just know he is happy. He loves treats and toys and maybe he loves his toys a little too much. Reggie has a habit of going around the house and stealing the toys from the other dogs and taking them into his room where his crate is. However, he is also fine with the other dogs coming and stealing the toys right back. This just adds to the fun. Reggie will steal his way right into your heart. Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

5 year old butterscotch colored Potter is just as sweet to meet as he is to look at. While not THE Potter for whom the rescue is named for, THIS Potter definitely has some fantastic qualities that make us happy to come across a dog with the same name as the dog for which the rescue was named for years ago. Potter is about 50 lbs and is a respectful guy on leash. He enjoys human companionship and is very happy to curl up at your feel or even next to you on your bed if you let him. Potter doesn't play with toys much, his foster dad wonders if maybe he hadn't had many in his lifetime, but he sure loves treats and will sit calmly and wait for ... (Read More)them before taking them with a gentle mouth. Potter has met other dogs and has shown some great manners. He is recovering well from his Heartworm treatment and it is thought that he will like to play with other dogs once he has had a good month to fully heal from his treatment. Potter is housetrained, crate trained, and has learned 'sit' quickly. He is learning 'down' and 'off' as he does like to sneak snacks off the kitchen counter when he thinks no one is looking. Pit Bull Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs
Personality: Average Energy
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Edith is, in the words of her foster mommy, 'an itty bitty pitty' weighing in at 32 pounds. She's the picture of calm sweetness in the house and an excellent canine playmate outdoors. She gets along well with dogs of all sizes and ages, and she has been friendly and sweet with the children she has met. She's only 4 years young, so although the potentially hectic, puppy phase is in her past, her playful, affectionate nature and joyful wigglyness is still intact. She's house trained and crate trained and will walk on a leash, but foster mom says that due to the fact that she's not the least bit destructive in the house, she gives her free roam ... She does love to sleep and snuggle, but she will also trot around the house with her ball or play and wrestle with the other dogs in the house. She's done very well at the dog park, and we think she will make someone very happy! Foster mom says, 'She is a wiggle butt, loves to be peted and snuggled. One ear up, one ear down most of the time but they do have independent swivel motion should the need arise to be extra watchful. She is petite, sweet and loving. Even though I hated her name at the beginning it totally fits her. She loves the dog park and all dogs, loves to chase and be chased. She is affectionate and incredibly loving. Loves to sleep under the blankets and is a great hot water bottle.' Sounds like a good companion, don't you think? Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

When Sugar first came to her foster home, she was frozen with fear. But her foster family proved to be trustworthy, stable, patient, and kind. In time, Sugar began to walk about their home freely. Eventually, she made her way onto their laps. Sugar is most fearful of small children and will even growl at dolls. Therefore, Sugar needs a home with older respectful children or adults. Sugar discourages other dogs from interacting with her, so a home where she is the only dog would be best. She ignores the cat, so we think she could cohabitate with one (or more). Sugar is housetrained. She likes to sleep in her crate with the door open. Sugar ... Australian Shepherd Mix    Age: Senior

Compatibility: Good w/ Male Dogs Only, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Very Low Energy, Somewhat Dominant
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current, Arthritis

Victoria is a beautiful Aussie Husky mix with stunning blue eyes. She is a gorgeous older gal (the vet believes around 10 years) who is looking for a perfect retirement home. Victoria has come a long way learning how to trust people. She will still bark at new people who come into the house but does well giving space. She is very slow to warm up to people and so will need an owner who is dog savvy and can give her the time and space that she needs. She bonds much more quickly with men as her previous owner was an older man but given time she will bond with any adult who has patience with her. She would prefer a home that is quiet and without ... (Read More)children. Once she has learned to trust you though she is very loving and wants nothing more than to be able to sit with you and get scratches and loving. She does well with other dogs that are not super energetic and doesn't seem to mind cats, chickens or other poultry. As long as they are mellow and don't jump on her or get too rough she is okay with that. Victoria does have a small cyst on her bottom and some hip and vision problems, but now that she has gotten settled neither seem to bother her very much. With regular supplements she is able to get around fine and will even play. She absolutely loves squeaky toys of any kind and loves to throw them over her head and chase them around. Victoria could be the perfect dog for someone who would love a companion but doesn't really want to be super active. She is fine with going out 2 or 3 times a day and just hanging out and being your side kick the rest of the day. Rescue Me ID: 16-11-16-00012LIZA (female)

Lab Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Liza is a diamond in the rough,' says foster mom. Now, this may turn you off immediately, but if it doesn't, please take the time to read this through and learn a bit about a dog who has a boatload of upside and just needs some patience and time. Liza came to us recently, and she's been in her foster home for about a week. Foster mom says that she has made marked improvements in her household manners in just a week's time. We will say this about Liza: She is very eager to be with her people. It seems like Liza attaches quickly to her caregiver, and there are times that she needs to be reminded that she can have a life of her own! ;) She's ... (Read More)learning that her people aren't going to disappear, and she can relax even if they aren't right there. Liza is a 4 year old, 52 pound lab mix. She was recently treated for heartworm, and she has been restored to full health. She's a high energy girl who loves to run, loves to walk, loves to play fetch'|loves to move! She is almost completely house trained, crate trained, and she walks well on a leash. She knows sit and come, and she has an excellent recall (especially if you have a ball!), she also is very close to understanding 'stay.' She's very eager to play with other dogs, and she has shown no aggression over food or toys. She's okay with cats, but she may make cats and their owners nervous because she has a decent prey drive. She hasn't spent any time with children, but with her high energy, we think that she will do best with older children. She would make an excellent hiking or running partner for an active owner. Foster mom says that she exercises Liza an average of an hour a day, and after that'|.Liza might think about resting! And you should know that Liza can be a very aggressive snuggler! She absolutely loves to cuddle, and the only nippiness the family has seen has come when she is kissing their ears and chin in her joy at being cuddled! But even this behavior has been curbed over the last week. She is learning the ropes of the house, and foster mom has been impressed with how much she has learned in such a short time. Foster mom has been amazed at how eager Liza is to please the people of the house. Liza is a work in progress, but we think that when you meet her and see the affection, the eagerness to please, the joyful, playful, bouncy, fun loving girl she is, you will find that she is worth the bit of effort it may take to bring out the confident dog that's in there! Rescue Me ID: 16-11-03-00009Percy (male)

Newfoundland Mix    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs
Personality: Low Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current, Arthritis

'He is a joy. I have been so blessed to have him here, and I have no problem with him living his life out here, but by chance there's someone else out there that he can bond with, I want to give him that opportunity. To watch him learn to grow and trust, to be playful and silly with the dogs has been an amazing experience.. To see a dog that was so.shut down they (shelter staff) said he had no personality, come to life and enjoy it is something words can't describe..' We thought foster mom's words would be the best introduction. Percy came to us four months ago, snatched from death's door. He was so shy and fearful that he spent the first ... (Read More)stint of his stay at his foster home'|in the bathroom, huddled between the toilet and the tub. But, friends, that was four months ago, and with the patience of a saint and the gentleness of a nurse, foster mom (and her pack-- she would never leave them out!) have seen this gentle, shy, quiet, old soul come to life. Percy is a Newfoundland mix who is between 65-70 pounds. He's about 8 %BD years old, and he's house trained, just about crate trained, and walks well on a leash. He's a low energy guy who does suffer from skin allergies (controlled with food and prednisone) and a bit of arthritis. He's missing some teeth, and he hides from children'|.but'|.he LOVES other dogs! Foster mom is pretty sure her pack of three dogs has done as much for Percy as all the tender, loving care and good food have done for him. She would insist that Percy go to a home with dogs who will keep him company. He does love to walk and to play, and he's even started swimming in the pond at his foster home. He's not destructive and he's a bit of an independent fellow as far as a lot of human affection goes. Foster mom thinks that a patient, caring person could probably draw him even further from his shell, but she stresses the patient part. Percy has rewarded foster mom greatly for her efforts, but it was not a short process! He's no trouble, though, and his gentle, quiet temperament makes him a joy to have in the home. He's embraced all the foster dogs that have come and gone, and really, his new home will be the place where an old soul can put up their feet and enjoy the gentle walks and pleasant play of those golden years of life. Rescue Me ID: 16-09-13-00346Roam (male)

Rhodesian Ridgeback Mix    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Not Good with Other Dogs, Good with Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Average Energy, Somewhat Dominant
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current, Aggressive, Fearful/Anxious

My husband and I are desperately seeking options to re-home our beloved dog Roam ASAP. We have met with our vet, and will need to put him to sleep come 9/24 if we have no other options =(. We have been working so hard to find a place to take on our Roam and adopt him out to another final forever home. Sadly, we have been in contact with many rescues over the past several months, and all have been either full or unable to take on another dog with behavioral struggles. Roam is our 5 1/2 year old Rhodesian Ridgeback mix who is struggles with anxiety (especially around kids and unpredictable situations), unfamiliar people coming to his ... (Read More)home, and dog aggression. We have had him since he was 8 weeks old, and originally rescued him from an SPCA shelter in Lakeland, Florida. My husband and I are having a baby soon, so we are trying to find him a new place to call home ASAP. He is was 76.8 lbs as of 7/2016, is up to date on all his shots, he is neutered, and is in great physical health aside from his anxiety. While he has always struggled with being territorial around the house & toys (places/things he deems to be 'his'), over the last year and a half he has become more anxious & dog aggressive and had begun to snip and show aggressive tendencies towards people. He has not bitten a human, but has bitten 5-6 dogs - with the worst outcome being about 8 stitches. As we noticed his anxiety and aggression mounting, we immediately started working with a behaviorist, and then afterwards we discovered a program called Sit Means Sit and started even more intensive training with them. He has also excelled at every other obedience training class he has ever participated in, although he did struggle being in group classes with other dogs. The past year and a half has been a lot of work towards rehabilitation, but sadly our boy is still struggling and we are running out of time. He does take 40mg of Prozac every day that seems to take the edge off his anxiety, but he can still be very reactive in triggering situations. We have worked so hard to help him, but the situation isn't working and its heartbreaking. At this point, knowing that he cannot be around kids, and with a baby on the way, we feel like we are running our of time and need to find him another option ASAP. Roam is such a beautiful boy. He is loyal to a fault, protective, LOVES to hike and play fetch, enjoys snuggling, camping, traveling, and swims like a fish. He doesn't do well at dog parks though - he gets too anxious. We wish we could keep him for the rest of his life!! Sadly, we feel we cannot for his sanity and for our daughter's safety. He would do exceptionally well in a stable house with a calm couple who has dog experience, with good outdoor space, and likes to spend time outside (a farm maybe??). Roam absolutely adores his humans, and generally just wants to be wherever we are - whether hiking or swimming, or laying on the couch (when invited!). PLEASE HELP!! Thank you so much for your time! P.S. He LOVES horses! We lived on a farm with a few horses in 2014 and he loved chasing them and rolling in their dung as often as possible =P. (Less)

Pit Bull    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Ello, Charlie here, so very pleased to make your acquaintance. I am a 50lb 2-3 year-old male American Pit Bull Terrier and I am neutered, vaccinated and micro-chipped. You might notice that I have a rather significant overbite that results from issues with my mandible and nasopharyngeal area and can cause some breathing difficulties from time to time. I have a prescription for two medications that I take only as needed-which is rarely. My people are happy to share more information with anyone interested in adopting me. It's just most important that I avoid becoming over-heated. I wear a 'Sense-ation' harness when walking. I have mastered, ... (Read More)'Sit,' 'Wait' and 'Down'. I sit and wait for my meals. So, now, I am learning, 'Leave It' and 'Off.' I am a happy puppy at heart. Sometimes, I am tempted by socks . . . but other than those wonderfully smelly garments, I don't bother my peoples' belongings. I do enjoy all manner of dog toys and chews. I like to play with them by myself, with people-friends, or with dog-friends, like me. My foster-sister, Libby and I are presently engaged in a never-ending war, called 'tug.' Even though people call it 'war,' its just play for us and we don't care who wins. I get along famously with quite a menagerie of dogs at my foster home . . . there is just one rather outspoken old man who is gruff with all of us, but I am learning to give him a wide-berth. Though no children live here, several visit regularly. They range from ages 8 to 14 and with slow respectful introductions I am very comfortable around them and rather enjoy being loved by them. I do recall that when younger children would rush at a dog I was frightened. When my people are away during the day, I stay in my crate. I complain a little at first, because I would much rather be with my people-friends or dog-friends, but I quiet down soon enough. I have been called, a lover and player, delightful, a sweet boy, and sometimes, a 'space-invader,' because I LOVE to snuggle. I am affectionate, eager to please and well-behaved. When I first meet new people, I can be a little standoffish-I do best if they just ignore me and allow me to approach them when I am ready. If you give me a little space when we first meet, I will be happy to 'invade your space' and give you love, if you let me. PIease Read Before Adopting a Dog in Vermont
Dogs can make good pets in Vermont if they match your IifestyIe. Dogs have a reputation for being "man's best friend" for excellent reasons. Dogs are wonderful companions. Many breeds, in addition to being affectionate, devoted members of the family, are useful working dogs and guardians. Most dogs form tight bonds with their humans, and need to be cared for like the valuable family members they are. But sadly, some owners do not live up to the responsibility and involvement it takes to properly care for a dog throughout its life. Dogs can become the victims of neglect or active abuse. Some dogs receive tender, attentive care from their owners, but no longer have a home after their owner passes away or experiences a major life event that makes him unable to keep his dog. There are many more dogs than there are homes for dogs, and dogs that are not spayed or neutered can accidentally produce large numbers of puppies, exacerbating overpopulation. For this reason, three to four million dogs, many of them perfectly healthy and wonderful animals, are euthanized in the U.S. each year.

Many people get excited about owning a new dog, decide to get a puppy, and then pick one out at a pet shop or visit a breeder with a new litter. However, there are so many wonderful, friendly dogs in need of adoption, including puppies and purebreds. Some of these dogs might even be a better fit for a family than a new puppy; for instance, some adult dogs in need of adoption are already housebroken and obedience trained. Adoption is typically much less expensive than purchasing a dog. People who adopt dogs find the experience extremely rewarding, bond very closely with their dogs, and have the added satisfaction of knowing that one less animal has to be euthanized. If your family is ready for a canine companion, please consider adopting a dog!
