Rescue Me ID: 15-09-01-00132Bowser (male)

Bulldog    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good with Female Dogs Only, Good with Adults (Not Kids)
Health: Neutered

Bowser is 9 years old, great with female dogs & older kids & horses, not sure of small kids, male dogs or cats. He'd probably need a strong owner to continue with his humping/ slight dominance issue. He is neutered, UTD on all shots, heartworm and Lyme negative. He is hard of hearing but can hear the smoke alarm when it goes off. He's had chronic ear infections, so he's sensitive with his ears, but will let you touch them if you approach him slowly. He can be a typical stubborn bully at times and likes to go at his own pace & not be rushed. He is great on and off the leash and doesn't require a fenced in yard. He wants to be wherever I am and ... (Read More)follows me everywhere. He is a huge snugglebug & just wants to love and be loved. Rescue Me ID: 15-09-01-00131Grissom (male)

American Water Spaniel Mix    Age: Young Adult

Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Grisson looks like a lion here, with his frilly hair!. Grissom is about 3 years old. He is a mix between a water spaniel and a labrador retriever. He is full of energy and loves to be on the go. We would recommend that Grissom go only to a home with older children because he can be excitable and in his excitement could accidentally knock a smaller child down. Grissom weighs about 50 pounds.

My friends call me Jax. I'm full of life and eager to please, friendly and happy. At about 10 months old, I weigh 34 pounds so I'm going to be a medium sized dog. I may grow as big as 40-45 when I'm a grown up. People here think I'm a Collie mixed with some sort of Spaniel. Not sure what that means, but I know I have adorable spots on my nose and a very cool stripe right in the middle of my head. As cute as I am, people kept walking by me at the shelter. I'm looking for a HOME filled with people who like to talk to me, play with me and snuggle with me. Our adoption fees are $300 which cover neutering, age appropriate vaccines ... Bulldog Mix    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Not Good w/ Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Queenie was saved from a terrible situation in Detroit, fostered, flown to VT and has since been spayed and undergone surgery on one ear. She is healing, and putting on weight and starting to find her inner dog. She is energetic, but able to settle shortly after and quiet in the house. She is house trained, loves to ride in the car, chase a bug squishy ball and investigate the yard. Queenie has been introduced to all sizes of people and after a bit of shyness and checking them out was interactive and happy. No cats. Queenie was fostered for two weeks in a home with people that she had never met as well as their dog, and it was reported that ... (Read More)after an initial adjustment period she settled in well. She went on walks with their dog in the neighborhood and did well. I take Queenie out 4-5 times a day and just throw the soccer ball for her. She loves it. She will drop it and allow me to pick it up without being protective. We discovered at the vets that she can be cage aggressive. I have been crating her and giving her a treat when she goes in and comes out. As long as I do not reach in to pull her out, but allow her to come out on her own, she is perfect. I do feel that she would do best in an active family where there are no small children as she just does not know her strength. She is still a puppy so needs to continue learning. She is very bright and willing. This dog would make a great hiking partner. (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 15-08-28-00064Leila (female)

Lab Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Most Cats
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Once you gain a shy girl's trust, she will be devoted to you for life. Such is the case with Leila. Something from her past has made her weary of humans....at first. It takes her about a week to realize she's safe and humans are worthy of her affection. Once that happens, Leila is a dream dog. She's house and crate trained, loves going on walks, and knows 'sit'. When her foster mom is out, she leaves Leila in a bedroom with an open crate. Leila is non-destructive and happily awaits her return by napping on the bed. She is more of an observer than a barker, though she will alert bark when strangers arrive and 'talk' when playing with other ... (Read More)dogs. Speaking of other dogs, Leila comes alive in the presence of her own kind. She adores all ages and sizes of canine. Leila loves to play and run with the pack. Her foster pack boosts her confidence with humans. For this reason, we will only consider adopters for Leila who already have at least one dog. Leila does well with cats too. She doesn't have a mean bone in her body but because of her shyness, we think she would do best with older kids who will respect her space. Leila is nervous but curious of new things; she needs calm, gentle, positive reinforcement and structure to build her confidence. Leila has a heart of gold and loves to be petted, massaged, and gives kisses to the people who win her over. Once you earn her trust, she will give you a lifetime of devotion. Leila is a 3 yr old, 39 lb, Lab/Boxer? mix. She is spayed, vaccinated, and micro-chipped. We are always looking for foster and/or adoptive homes.     Please meet Jack (fka Chester). Jack gets along well with all the dogs he lives with and is looking for an adoptive home who already has at least one other dog. He is friendly and playful with fellow canines. Jack has free run of the house when his foster family is out. In addition to being housetrained, he is not destructive to property when left alone. He is learning about walking on leash and doing very well-and is also being introduced to basic commands. Jack is very curious about the cat. Lab Mix    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good with Most Cats, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament

Penny-Pansy is her name. Believe it or not, but the name 'Penny' means flower and of course 'Pansy' is a type of violet flower. Penny-Pansy is beautiful and sweet like a flower too. She is a little bit of a shrinking violet when meeting someone for the first time, but it doesn't take her long to blossom into her true self. Penny-Pansy is a delightful, quiet girl who just wants to be loved. She enjoys playing with other dogs, big and small. Penny-Pansy shows no interest in the resident cat and just ignores her. She does just fine with older children but doesn't quite know what to expect from little ones, so she avoids them. Penny-Pansy is ... A word about crates....Penny-Pansy must be crated when her people are out with restricted chew-ables out of reach or she'll make mischief of one kind or another. This is not a problem because the crate is her den and she is fine with being in there during the work day. Penny-Pansy doesn't bark or complain about it. Lab Mix    Age: Young Puppy

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults

Thumper is all waggly tail, wiggly butt, wonderfully puppyness! He is house-trained, crate-trained, and knows 'sit' and 'come'(most of the time). Thumper is very treat motivated and eager to learn new things. He is learning to walk well with a chain leash that his foster mom keeps taut to teach him to walk by her side and not in front of her. Silly boy Thumper loves to go for walks with something in his mouth; he picks up sticks, leaves, and even rocks as he goes along! Thumper is playful and friendly to every dog he meets, he has not met cats but his foster mom thinks felines would most likely find his bouncy youthfulness annoying even ... (Read More)though he probably wouldn't hurt them. Thumper would very much like to play with the chickens, ducks, and goats behind the fence at his foster home - probably to chase them! Thumper does not live with children currently but he has met an 8 year old girl and he was smitten! We think he'd love to be a part of a family with kids. When his foster family is out, he curls up and goes to sleep or chews on a bone they give him. He only barks when he sees he's the only dog in a crate because he wants to come out and play! Thumper loves to run and would make a great jogging or hiking apprentice, he rides well in the car, LOVES the water, and doesn't mind being brushed. Rescue Me ID: 15-08-28-00049Luna (female)

Great Dane Mix    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs
Personality: Very High Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Luna is a large loveable lug of a lady. How one dog can be both elegantly athletic and awkwardly 'dorky' is a mystery . . . but, that's Luna. Luna is housetrained. She does not need to be crated. Thank goodness! Could you imagine the size of the crate you would need? She is very well-behaved when left home alone. When you come home to Luna, she announces your arrival with a booming bark, then she wiggles with happiness when she realizes, 'Oh, it's YOU!' Luna knows Sit, Wait and Come. She is very responsive and capable of a much higher level of training. Luna walks with a gentle-leader harness which she easily accepts having put on. Luna has ... (Read More)lived most recently on a large property in a rural setting where she was trusted off-leash. However, she has proven to be overly interested in porcupines and skunks, therefore, we would recommend basic obedience classes followed by a dedicated leash training program. Luna listens well . . . unless, distracted. Luna lived with a companion dog whom she got along with famously and enjoyed playing with enthusiastically. Luna is slower to make new canine friends. Luna's foster mom feeds everyone separately and removes dishes when they are empty because she was told that Luna had issues with possessiveness around food, but with her proactive response, she has not witnessed any issues. Luna responds well to firm verbal correction from confident assertive humans. She has never lived with cats. Luna has not lived with children, but so far she loves all of the teenagers and adults she has met. In her previous home, when guests were expected, Luna was brought out back while guests came inside, then they were given a hot dog to offer Luna. Hot dog introductions created fast friendships. Luna has a lot (no, really . . . A LOT) of energy and benefits from daily exercise-whether running, hiking or playing. An active assertive single-woman would be a perfect ying for Luna's yang. Luna is a big and lean 6-year-old, 80 lb, female Great Dane mix. She is spayed, vaccinated and micro-chipped. We are always looking for foster and/or adoptive homes.     Hello everyone, my name is Brooklyn. So, let me tell you a little a bit about me . . . to start with, I am housetrained, I know, Sit, Stay and Down, and I'm getting pretty good about walking wearing a leash. I'm eager to please, well-behaved, affectionate, joyful and playful. I like to play with toys and with other dogs. My favorite game is tug-o-war and my favorite toys are the ones I can play tug-o-war with! Tug-o-war is the BEST! I mostly ignore cats-I don't bother them and they don't bother me . . . except, there is a cat where I live whom I suspect wants to hurt me and I am afraid of her. I completely adore children. Kids are the BEST! ... (Read More)Sometimes the grandchildren come to visit. They are a one year old and a two year old and they make me so happy that sometimes I accidentally knock them down because my whole entire body starts wiggling and waggling with utter joy. But, they are sturdy children, and I am learning to control my body better in situations. I am trusted with free-run of the house when my people are out, but I really LOVE when they invite me to go with them. Car rides are the BEST! I LOVE food. Food is the BEST! I take treats very gently from my people, but I am learning that I cannot crowd someone when they are eating, and I'm not allowed to try to intimidate other dogs so that I can have all the food for myself . . . apparently this kind of behavior is frowned upon by humans, even though it works very well with canines. Even with my one little bitty issue, my foster mom says that I am a very special, very loving girl and that she is going to hate to lose me when my forever home comes along. I hope my forever home is a lot like my foster home, I could really get used this kind of life . . . having a home and family is the BEST! Brooklyn is a 66lb 3-year-old female Bulldog/Boxer mix.     Hi there! My name is Daisy and I'm a happy, friendly 5-6 month old pup. A really nice lady picked me up from the side of the road and gave me some food. I was really hungry. She said I would be safe now. I liked that. She told me there were people just like her who would want me to join their family. Me? Imagine that! I met a new puppy friend this morning and I really enjoyed spending time with him. I also got to meet a strange little girl today...I think they called her a cat.     I arrived at the shelter five weeks ago, and I'm trying very hard to stay pawsitive about my future. I'm going to be two years old on my next birthday, and that can be whenever you decide it is! I wonder if this family is you, and if you know how excited I am to meet you. I'm a little sad right now, because I don't know what is happening. I'm really ready to fall into a nice routine with a nice place to sleep at night and maybe a bowl of my own. I bet you didn't know that I am very calm and relaxed on a leash and I enjoy going for walks. I would love to go for hikes too - or if you are outdoorsy, I say whatever you are doing, I'll love doing!     This petite brindle beauty is Emma. She is housetrained and walks well on leash using a gentle leader. Emma listens intensely to her people and is eager to please and motivated by treats. She knows sit, wait and no; and is working on, come, off, lay down, back up, off, and leave it. Emma enjoys hard plastic chew toys and her foster mom bought a collection of Nylabones, special for her. If no one wants to play, Emma will happily entertain herself by dropping or tossing her toys and pouncing on them. She plays best with dogs her own size or larger with whom she is submissively playful and respectfully reads social cues. But, those other ... (Read More)pests, I mean, 'pets' also known as 'cats . . .' Emma is best not living with them. She loves her Lilliputians (children). She needs to be reminded to be gentle, but she is really very sweet: inviting them to play, accepting their patting and giving them love and kisses.Emma is happy to have big people play with her too. Sometimes she will invite play by nibbling on her people, and she needs reminders to use more appropriate methods. Emma sleeps in her crate at bedtime, and when her people are out. She is not vocal or whiney, but when she does let out a bark, the sound is so adorable that it evokes laughter. Emma has not exhibited any issues around food, but also has not been 'tested,' as she and her pack are routinely fed separately. She certainly has no problem with people sticking their hands inside her dish when she is eating. Emma has a happy-go-lucky personality, is easily corrected and loves pleasing her people. Emma deserves the best family possible. And, with just a little bit of training, she will be a fantastic dog for most any family. Emma is a 30lb 2-year-old female Pit-bull. She is spayed, vaccinated and micro-chipped. We are always looking for foster and/or adoptive homes. Please visit us at www.pottersangelsrescue.org to fill out an adoption or foster application.     Blake is a sweet 18 month old pooch that weighs approximately 45 lbs, right now. He is a plump little fluff ball that loves people. Blake came from a high kill shelter in Miami and at the age of 8 weeks old, was taken by a foster mom in Florida (thank you Rhonda for helping us to save Blake) and given a good start during his important socialization period. As such, he is friendly and outgoing with most folks although he does need to have a gradual introduction period. He appears to be on the fearful side, which is a new development with him. With regards to breed, well, we believe that he is 100% purebred, 'we don't know'(our vet ... (Read More)thinks he is a chow mix). His mom (that is also with us) is full grown and weighs 45 pounds. As such, based on his growth rate right now and his mom's stature, we don't believe that Blake will grow beyond 45 lbs. Blake is crate trained, up to date on all medical, and neutered. Blake came into rescue as a puppy and is growing up here, he needs someone to give him a chance. (Less)

Situation Wanted: Single young male canine seeking single older female human to share a life together in a quiet setting. Will come when called, especially when called for dinner . . . otherwise, prefers not to be bossed around. Falls in love hard and fast, with the right woman. I don't mind sharing the home with other friendly canines and would likely even be fine with cats, but I will admit I am not much of a 'player' and other dogs might consider me boring. Knowledgeable in all appropriate household customs, such as sleeping on a dog bed at night and in a crate if required, and to do bathroom-business outdoors. Friendly and curious around ... If he finds any, the item should be removed and he should be redirected to chew on something safe, like a Nylabone. Truman naturally gravitates toward women and is fearful of men. Truman is all at once: affectionate, playful, skittish, standoffish and sometimes stubborn. Truman has a wonderful sense of humor and animated personality. Truman is a 9 lb 2-year-old male Terrier/Chihuahua mix. He is neutered, vaccinated and micro-chipped. Rescue Me ID: 15-06-29-00148Nick-E (female)

German Shepherd Mix    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Not Good with Other Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Nick-e came to Almost Home Dog Rescue from a high kill shelter in Florida. The veterinarian believes that she is about 9 years old but she acts much younger. Give Nick-e a toy and watch her. We believe that Nick-e is a hoarder. Yes, that is right, a hoarder. Nick-e thinks that no toy is safe unless it is in HER crate. Although her crate is stuffed with toys, she keeps it very neat and orderly. She loves to forage through the toy boxes to see what she wants to bring in next. Nick-e does have a couple of special needs. She is not necessarily keen on all other dogs. Upon her arrival, it was discovered that Nick-e had severe issues with ... (Read More)her intestinal system. After trips and conversations with the veterinarian, treatment with various medications (and no resolution), it was determined that Nick-e probably had many food allergies. She was switched to a raw meat diet (chicken) and has done famously. Although some might not agree with this type of protocol, Nick-e really would need to be continued on this diet in order to avoid her health issues. (Because she was an owner surrender, we believe that the health issues could have been something that her previous owners could not resolve)She is a very happy go lucky kind of girl that dreams of having her own family someday. PIease Read Before Adopting a Dog in Vermont
Dogs can make good pets in Vermont if they match your IifestyIe. Dogs have a reputation for being "man's best friend" for excellent reasons. Dogs are wonderful companions. Many breeds, in addition to being affectionate, devoted members of the family, are useful working dogs and guardians. Most dogs form tight bonds with their humans, and need to be cared for like the valuable family members they are. But sadly, some owners do not live up to the responsibility and involvement it takes to properly care for a dog throughout its life. Dogs can become the victims of neglect or active abuse. Some dogs receive tender, attentive care from their owners, but no longer have a home after their owner passes away or experiences a major life event that makes him unable to keep his dog. There are many more dogs than there are homes for dogs, and dogs that are not spayed or neutered can accidentally produce large numbers of puppies, exacerbating overpopulation. For this reason, three to four million dogs, many of them perfectly healthy and wonderful animals, are euthanized in the U.S. each year.

Many people get excited about owning a new dog, decide to get a puppy, and then pick one out at a pet shop or visit a breeder with a new litter. However, there are so many wonderful, friendly dogs in need of adoption, including puppies and purebreds. Some of these dogs might even be a better fit for a family than a new puppy; for instance, some adult dogs in need of adoption are already housebroken and obedience trained. Adoption is typically much less expensive than purchasing a dog. People who adopt dogs find the experience extremely rewarding, bond very closely with their dogs, and have the added satisfaction of knowing that one less animal has to be euthanized. If your family is ready for a canine companion, please consider adopting a dog!
