Boxer Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

LJ doesn't ask for much, because he's not used to getting a lot. LJ has spent too much of his life living outside, tied to cable, starving, or running the streets to think that people are capable of giving him much more than that. With the life of abuse and neglect he's lived, a simple bowl of food and a pat on the head make LJ think he's a prince. We know he deserves more than that though, and we know you do too. LJ is a cute little bully mix with the sweetest "angel ears" we've ever seen. He's a petite little mister, probably only about 45 pounds, and just full of love! He's never met a stranger, he completely ignores cats, and ... (Read More)we believe he could share a home with other dogs as well. LJ needs you, can you be the person to show LJ how much of a king he is? Estimated to be between 3-4 years old (4/2015) (Less)

My name is River and I am an energetic ball catching superstar who loves playing ball and spending time with friends of all ages! A perfect day for me would be going on a walk/jog, playing ball, stopping by a training class and then snuggling up for a nap on your lap. Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Hello! My name is Sampson and I am three year old Rescue. I am ~75lbs and on the smaller end of a 'large dog'. My mom thinks I am a Catahoula Mix, but in new situations I am a little skiddish like a Dane! I get alone great with humans!! But not so well with dogs because I was attacked once as a puppy so it skewed my perception of other dogs. I do not go after dogs if I see them, however I enjoy my personal space and should be kept on a leash if I am going to be around them. I get along great with kids of all age, however I would do best with no young children in the house, because at night I like my own space. I go hiking and ... (Read More)backpacking with my mom all the time and I LOVE THE OUTDOORS! I can run all day with you or if you are busy I am also very good at napping! I am not a high energy boy by any means, but I have incredible endurance. My mom also says I need a special owner who has had dog experience before due to my sometimes, nervous and fearful personality. I can sit, stay, down, heel, come and more! I never have accidents in the house and don't chew on anything. I get pretty sad when you leave though so I wouldn't like to be left home along all day. Hello! My name is Kate and I am Sampson's mom. I love him more than anything in the world and it is only because I love him that I am letting him go. We added another dog to our pack a year and half ago and unfortunately Sampson just needs to be the only dog somewhere. He is not aggressive with our dog since he grew up around him but just the presence of another dog in the house is making him uncomfortable and it's a shame to see him unhappy. He would be happy with an outdoorsy person or couple that has some room to play. Additionally, I have a report from a behaviorist outlining his assessment if you are interested in meeting him. I am only charging a fee, because I want it to go towards training for you and him. I am more than happy to speak with you if you an interested and feel free to give me a call. Thank you so much, Kate (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 15-04-22-00340Turbo (male)

Rat Terrier Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: High Energy, Submissive
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current, Abused/Neglected,
 Fearful/Anxious

Hello, I am looking for a new home for our rescue Rat Terrier dog named Turbo who is two to three years old. Our family is living in a rental house with our two dogs Max and Turbo. In June, my mother will be moving in with us with her dog Jennie, and our lease allows only two pets to live in the rental house. Turbo is male and we got him from a shelter in Atlanta when we lived in Georgia. Turbo has lived with us for two years. He is current on all of his shots and takes heartworm and flea and tick medication monthly. Turbo is also neutered and has a tracking device implanted in him. Turbo has a nervous disposition but is also very ... (Read More)sweet in nature. When we first got him, he would run and hide from us. We were eventually able to earn Turbo's trust. He loves to sit on his owner's lap during television time and crawl into his master's bed when they are napping. Turbo gets along fine with our Golden Retriever but is definitely the type of dog who needs to be 'The King'. Like most Terriers, he tends to get jealous and wants all of the attention to himself. However, he is still very sweet and caring; he does not get into fights with our golden, and can often be found napping and cuddling with him. Turbo tolerates children but does growl at small children and babies. He would work best in a home with teenagers or adults only. Turbo has a lot of energy and really needs to be in a home where there is a closed fence. He also needs to be taken out consistently for long walks around the neighborhood. He is prone to do the 'Great Escape' if he is not walked regularly. He walks well on a leash, but will need to be reminded of who his master is when walking. He also is big on marking his territory when walking. Turbo is trained to sleep in a crate although he would prefer to sleep in his caregiver's bed under the blankets. He will not go potty in his crate. Upon leaving the house, Turbo is trained to stay in his crate. Turbo still has house 'accidents' both #1 and #2 if he is not taken out at regular times throughout the day. Upon rising he will go #1 outside but will need to be walked in the neighborhood to do #2. Many mornings he will do #2 in two different locations. During the day he will need to be taken out several times to go #1, otherwise he will sneak away to a room to urinate. If left in his crate during the day, he will only require one potty break mid day. In the evening after dinner, he will need to be taken out to do #1 and #2. We feed Turbo once a day in the evening. In the morning he is given one snack. He is trained to wait for his treat and food with the stay command. Like most Terriers he will need daily reminders of his commands. Turbo loves to run and play with squeaky toys and chase squirrels. Our current house does not have a fence and a doggie door, so a house with such items may help improve his bathroom issues and his current need for frequent walks. We are very sad to be giving up Turbo, because he really is a sweet and caring little guy. Unfortunately, since we are constrained by our landlord, it is not feasible to have Turbo in this home once my mother moves in. Turbo deserves better; he needs space to run free and explore on his own terms, but he also needs individual love and care. We do not want to give Turbo up, but we will if it means giving him a better home. Please help us give our little guy the loving home he deserves! Thank you. (Less)

Sassafras (Sassy) is a young, beautiful Saint Bernard who has been our family's pet since she was a puppy. Sadly, we cannot afford to keep her any longer, but would love to see her go to a loving home. She has always struggled with anxiety and aggressive behavior towards strangers, and takes a while to get used to new people. Animal ID: 1591Drake (male)

Rat Terrier    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Drake is an 8-month-old bundle of love and fun. Short and stocky at 11 lbs., he is social and frisky, loves fetching balls and squeaky toys, taking long walks and jogs on the leash, and snuggling up to his people. He's particularly good buddies with his 11-year-old human 'foster' brother, and though a little shy the first time, he has really enjoyed meeting other kids and grownups at the soccer field. Drake also loves to play with other willing dogs, big and small. Sometimes he gets a little too intrusive to suit the older Rattie in his foster home, so he just hangs out with the others or waits for his people to play. He was briefly around a ... (Read More)dog-savvy cat and was curious but seemed to get along. Drake doesn't bark unless he joins in with his foster siblings announcing an arrival at the door. He is trying to grow out of his puppy mouthiness and love of jumping on people, but he's so happy to see you that he just can't help it sometimes. He is very well house trained with only one little accident on the first day. In fact, Drake is smart, quick, and loves to please his people, so he will train easily in general and could do well in agility and other outdoor activities. While he would likely learn to be crated, he requires a larger crate and plenty of exercise before a stay inside one, and he would like a few toys for diversion while he's there. At night, he sleeps soundly on his foam bed beside his foster mom's bed. All in all, Drake is an awesome pup on the path to becoming a wonderful dog, and he is looking for an active, engaged family--your family, perhaps--to take him down that path. ========================================================================================If you are interested in adopting Drake, please go to New Rattitude's website at http://www.NewRattitude.org/adopt.htm, where there is detailed information and a link to our adoption application. Jack Russell    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Average Energy, Submissive
Health: Spayed

Crackers is a 7 year old Jack Russell. She behaves more calmly than her age and breed would seem. She is fixed and has been with our family since she was eight weeks old. Crackers loves to take walks, and be loved. She is missing several of her lower front teeth, so her active ball playing days are unfortunately over. She bit the mailman when she was about 5 months old and she recently bit a child. She is by no means an aggressive dog and has not had any problems with people or our three children. We are looking for a loving home with no children that will love and care for Crackers.

Animal ID: 1588Rory (male)

Rat Terrier Mix    Age: Adult

Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Rory is a 5-year-old, 10-lb. Rat Terrier-Chihuahua mix, who can be shy and standoffish at first until he learns he can trust you, and then he's very snuggly and friendly. He spent a lot of time at a shelter, so he's still learning to trust new people and will growl when he feels threatened. However, he has never bitten or been inappropriate, just vocal. In fact, he has an entire repertoire of voices he uses to express himself, including his signature 'Husky howl.' Rory is house trained and will go to the door to let you know he needs to go out. He walks well on a leash, too. Rory does not mind being in a crate as long as it is a large wire ... (Read More)one, but he does not like being in a small, enclosed crate and frankly would prefer to spend his time right next to you, curled up on the bed or sofa or sitting in the kitchen. Rory avoids the children that come to his foster home because they confuse and scare him. He's only a little guy, after all, and he's worried that they might not understand that his polite growls mean 'please leave me alone,' so he would do best in a home without small children. Rory gets along fine with other dogs that respect his space, and he is living with three cats in his foster home and ignores them all. Whoever adopts Rory is going to get an adorable and loving companion! More photos of this photogenic fellow are available at http://imageevent.com/newrattitude/rory . ========================================================================================If you are interested in adopting Rory, please go to New Rattitude's website at http://www.NewRattitude.org/adopt.htm, where there is detailed information and a link to our adoption application. Not a mean bone in his body. He is not completely housetrained. So someone with the patience to help him through this is needed. He would really like a home to call his own.     If I had to write my own puppy dating profile it would probably read: Big fluffy goober puppy seeks fur-ever home! I'm Clyde... pulled today from the Tazewell shelter. I am around 2 yrs old & still havef LOTS of puppy energy and a wonderful singing voice. I need some work on my leash manners but I ride well in the car. I may be a little much for some other dogs because I do have a lot of energy so the rescue is going to require a few 'play dates' with any interested homes that have other dogs for that reason. I am UTD on shots & will be neutered and HW tested prior to moving into my new home.

Pit Bull    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Not Good w/ Other Dogs, Not Good w/ Cats, Good w/ Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Average Energy, Somewhat Dominant
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

We have two female pit-bulls that were raised together from puppies. They are now fighting to the point of nearly killing each other. Juli is not usually the one who starts it (the other does with a low growl) but she is instantly on attack and is relentless. Separately, they are loving, sweet girls. We ended up with two puppies by accident and did not know that females would fight each other - even having grown up together. One or both must go to a new home.

German Shepherd Mix    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs
Personality: Average Energy, Submissive
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Meet Elsa! she is a 7-8 month old beautiful white shepherd mix that came to us from a horrible situation. Elsa and her two siblings were left on their own to fend for themselves from the beginning, starved and neglected with little to no human contact and then dumped in a high kill rural shelter in the south. What little human contact they did have doesn't seem to have been pleasant so understandably, it has been a very slow process trying to re-gain their trust and help them feel secure. Because they all still have fear issues, we do consider them **Special Needs** and they will need very special homes. It took a lot of patience, time and ... (Read More)love for them to open up in their foster home but the more they felt safe and secure with their surroundings, the more they started to open up and act like puppies. Elsa's siblings have both recently found their forever homes and now it is Elsa's turn. Elsa has such a sweet nature and she loves playing with other animals, even the dog savvy cat is one of her pals! Even though these puppies seem like happy, playful, silly pups in their foster home, a place where they feel comfortable, they are still very fearful of the outside world. A new person, different places, car rides, even being on a leash is scary for them. Their foster mom is working with them to try and build confidence but with fearful puppies you cannot push them. They have to do things in their own time and require very positive training techniques. We have found that there are some things that really help them with the adjustment period and therefore we would like to have these things present in any potential home. A relaxed home with a fenced in yard is a must. While they do not really enjoy walking around on a leash, they absolutely love playing in the yard. They play with toys, they chase balls, they really like running around in a place that feels secure. Having another established, outgoing, friendly dog already in the home also works wonders. Even though they are fearful, the have always gotten along well with other animals and are submissive in nature. They will follow the other dog's lead so having a confident role model in the home really helps bring out their true personalities and helps them settle faster into a new home environment. Elsa's family will need extra patience and time to work with her and help build confidence. Her forever family needs to understand and accept that she may always have some fearful tendencies and prefer to be a 'homebody'. If you think you may have room in your heart and home for this very special little girl please contact us to arrange a meet! (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 15-04-12-00556Somaya (female)

Pit Bull Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Beautiful brindle girl Somaya wants to be your new best friend! Somaya was adopted from us as an itty bitty puppy after we pulled her from a shelter several years ago. Now, nearly 3 years later, she's back with us and waiting for a REAL forever home this time. Somaya was picked up by animal control running loose in her neighborhood and taken to our local shelter. Shelter staff was able to get in contact with her previous owner, but unfortunately, they decided not to return for her. Somaya has been living in a home as the only animal in the house her entire life, so she needs her new owner to be patient and introduce her to other pets ... (Read More)slowly. Somaya has lots of wonderful, playful energy, and would make someone a terrific hiking, running, or biking buddy. Because she's so playful and happy to meet everyone, we recommend a home with older children so no little ones end up getting bumped, tail-thumped, or knocked over by once of Somaya's famously powerful lick baths. Can you give Somaya the home of her dreams? Apply today at www.virginiapawsforpits.org. Approximately 3 years old, 56 pounds (3/2015) Virginia Paws for Pits is a registered 501c3 charity. Because shelters do not have the resources for proper labor/delivery and neonatal care of puppies, Kwan's future looked bleak. We scooped her up and gave her a safe place to have her puppies. Soon after, all of her puppies were adopted, but poor Mama Kwan was left waiting. She's still waiting! Approximately 3-5 years old (3/2015) Virginia Paws for Pits is a ...     This gentle soul doesn't ask for much. A smile, a pet, anything you can offer is just fine with him. Kurtis is a peaceful soul who can mix with kids, carts, and dogs with ease. When I picked him up off the transport van, I couldn't believe my eyes. We was caked in years of dirt, and I don't think he had ever known a warm bath or a night indoors. I bathed him twice and wrapped him up in a blanket. Afterwards, he cuddled up on the floor of my car and just looked at me like he was saying thank you.     Surely there is someone out there who wants to adopt Jasper! Jasper is a big, sweet, goofy boy. He's got nothing but love to give. Even though Jasper was the victim of an abusive training regime for much of his life, I know he's got to be wondering why his family of 3 years left him in a cement kennel, and why they aren't coming back for him. My heart breaks for Jasper. He deserves so much better than this! Just is just over 3 years old. He was adopted from us as a tiny puppy, and recently returned by his family. Great Dane Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Not Good w/ Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Weighing in at 120 pounds, Crash is one big boy! We guess him to be an American Bulldog/Great Dane mix. There is not a mean bone in his great big body, but Crash was not property socialized as a puppy, and as a result, this big goofy boy is no 'social genius'. He is WONDERFUL at home, but social scenes aren't his strong suit, and his extra-large size can make him hard to manage. Because of this, Crash will need a dedicated owner willing to work on desensitizing him to social situations, or someone that's okay with him being a home body. He is crate trained, house broken, and working on his leash manners. He knows sit, down and wait. We ... (Read More)are willing to waive his adoption fee for a potential family to put towards a professional trainer to help fine tune him. What Crash may lack in manners, he more than makes up for with his charm and personality. Come meet Crash and see his big, sweet, mushy face in person.     This adorable, snuggly little lady is Adelyn. What she must have gone through with her previous family, I cannot imagine. The family that should have loved, protected, and cared for Adelyn dropped her off at a very high kill shelter in South Carolina just days before she was about to go into labor. Adelyn did not stand a chance at this shelter. Shelters, especially overcrowded outdoor shelters like this one, do not have the resources to accommodate the labor, delivery and neonatal care of puppies safely, so they would not have had any choice but to put mommy Adelyn to sleep with her unborn puppies. Luckily, we were able to commit to her and ... (Read More)brought her all the way to Virginia the next day to be a VPFP dog. Since then, we have all fallen head over heel for this little rockstar. She is completely house broken and has gotten along with anything and everyone she's met so far. Take a seat beside this little lady, and she'll be curled up in your lap just as soon as she can manage. After giving birth to 9 healthy puppies, Adelyn has some late nights ahead of her caring for her large litter. After her puppies are weaned and she is spayed, Adelyn will be looking for a home of her own. So often, our VPFP puppies are scooped up like hot cakes while the perfectly trained well mannered mommies wait and wait for a home of their own. Lets break this trend and make sure Adelyn has a forever home waiting for her after her puppies are raised. Fill out an application to adopt Adelyn today!
