Ben is in danger of be euthanized today or tomorrow. We were going to foster him. When he had his evaluation done and introduced to another dog, he lunged and growled. I don't know if this is because he has been in the shelter since the 23rd of last month, scared or because he doesn't like or know how to get along with other dogs. We have 2 dogs and 2 cats and when we heard that, we got concerned about the safety of all the animals involved. We are hoping that someone can give him a chance and work with him. I adopted him when he was 2 months old from the Spokane Humane Society. Unfortunately I am moving, and can not take him with me. He's moved with me from Washington to California and back, but this time it's just not possible to take him. He's a wonderful dog and it breaks my heart to have to re-home him. (Read More)much (or more) than I do. He is neutered, micro-chipped, and up to date on all of his shots. He can not be in a home with children or other dogs, but cats are okay (he was raised around 2 cats). This guy prefers a quiet and peaceful home with laid back owners. Simba is a mellow senior dog that likes to lay in the sun and watch the birds and squirrels outside, take long naps, and go on short walks (as he's older he can't go long distances anymore but he still loves to walk!) He enjoys gentle play time, ear scratches, and hugs. He's a tried and true assistant chef that will keep your kitchen floor nice and clean! He walks well on a leash, and has basic training. He's very well behaved and pays attention/listens well to commands. Simba is a minor special needs dog, and he requires an extra special owner that understands him and will be willing to work with him and his needs. He is in very good health overall, but he can have slight urinary incontinence overnight. He does fine during the day when he can be let out every couple of hours. However, at night he wears a reusable male wrap diaper just in case of accidents. If you're able and willing to get up and let him out in the middle of the night, you won't ever have to worry about this problem. (I usually let him out 4-4.5 hours after I go to sleep and I never wake up to a wet diaper in the morning). The diaper is recommended for use overnight (just in case) or if you're out of the house and he's left indoors for more than 2-3 hours at a time. He is mostly an indoor dog, and doesn't do well with being tied up or left alone outside for long periods of time. He does enjoy the out doors when the weather is nice, but he needs a home that will allow him to live and sleep inside. He was raised in an apartment and does well in any sized home (despite his own size). He is quiet and laid back. He doesn't bark much, but he will alert you to intruders. Simba is a Chow Chow mix and has the temperament of a Chow. ****Understanding of the breed and patience is required!***** Past history with the breed is even better. He is a sensitive dog that needs a gentle hand (loud scolding, yelling, or hitting just won't do. A soft remark or correction is all he needs). You must be an owner that can respect him and his boundaries. In return, he will respect you 10 fold, and will be the most loyal and loving companion you could ever wish for! I am asking a $75 re-homing fee for him. He comes with food (how much depends on when he finds a new owner), a king sized dog bed, grooming brush, his reusable male wrap diaper (plus pads), and his favorite toy. ABSOLUTELY NO BUNCHERS. I have an 8 year old Rat Terrier that we are unable to give enough attention to. She's a total sweetheart- not a biter at ALL. I built her a custom kennel that's about 3x3 and she sleeps on a cedar dog bed inside it. We also have another dog (a lab mix) and a cat that she gets along great with. Here's the 'one thing' about Bitty (that's her name), about 2 years ago she dug under our side fence to 'play' with the German Shepherd next door....he was not friendly and almost killed her. After $1700 in vet bills, she left with a clean bill of health (amazing after what she'd been thru...) BUT she is missing that majority of her right ear. She isn't missing any functionality, it's just cosmetic. She also will cower when you approach her, but once you pick her up, she's fine and wants to kiss you all over!! She is nervous meeting new people but really wants to connect and to trust them. Sometimes it can take a little time for her nerves to calm down, but once she does she is content to lie in her crate or on a dog bed while you watch TV or cook dinner. Fae is curious about the other dogs in the house, and while she hasn't initiated any play with them, she is very friendly and has shown no negative behavior toward them. She would do very well in a home where there are other dogs because she gains a lot of confidence and learns from watching them interact with people. Fae is still skittish with quick movements in general -- and will often flatten to the ground when approached or reached toward -- so although she has not yet met any children, young children with their quick and unpredictable movements would undoubtedly make her nervous. Here are some observations from volunteers who worked with Giovanni over the weekend. Giovanni is scared and may prefer women handlers. He does much better if you can take him out with his sister in MK46, but he also needs work on getting in/out of the kennel on his own. He is very housebroken. Giovanni is kind of head shy, but very obedient, sits, shakes, etc., and is treat motivated (will stand on his hind legs for treats). He loves to play ball. Call him over with a treat when you are done playing ball and have him sit while you give him a couple of treats and then leash him up. Gail took him to the relaxation room in the training center and found him to be very affectionate and loving. On Sunday we inspected his teeth and his paw in the exercise yard and he did not put up a fuss or try to back out of being handled. There were four different volunteers worked with him at different times from Friday-Sunday and we had very positive interactions with him. Giovanni is a very sweet, obedient loving dog. When I read these posts I see a lot of energy around why an animal is put up for adoption, and what is more important to me is making sure an animal finds a suitable home. We took him to our vet who did a pretty comprehensive overview of his health and suggested that he is likely eight years old. Here are some 'tidbits' about Doug: - he has an innate need to sleep under the covers - he is very loving and friendly. He loves to be near his person and will offer you a paw when you're typing on your laptop or he will shove his nose under your hand to make sure he gets more pets. - he has never messed in the house, except one time during the first week we had him where he peed near the door. - he eats high quality dog food. A few times a week we mix his dry kibble with some high-quality wet food - while he is friendly, he has horrible leash manners. What I mean by this is that he tends to pull when you walk him. We purchased a Gentle Leader (which we will be keeping) and that has essentially solved his pulling problem. - while he likes to take rides in the car, he has a need to sit in your lap while driving. - he is quite bright and interactive, a common trait of the breed. - he gets along with our other rat terrier and our cat. - he is very good about letting you know when he needs to go outside. Dogs can make good pets in Washington if they match your IifestyIe. Dogs have a reputation for being "man's best friend" for excellent reasons. Dogs are wonderful companions. Many breeds, in addition to being affectionate, devoted members of the family, are useful working dogs and guardians. Most dogs form tight bonds with their humans, and need to be cared for like the valuable family members they are. But sadly, some owners do not live up to the responsibility and involvement it takes to properly care for a dog throughout its life. Dogs can become the victims of neglect or active abuse. Some dogs receive tender, attentive care from their owners, but no longer have a home after their owner passes away or experiences a major life event that makes him unable to keep his dog. There are many more dogs than there are homes for dogs, and dogs that are not spayed or neutered can accidentally produce large numbers of puppies, exacerbating overpopulation. For this reason, three to four million dogs, many of them perfectly healthy and wonderful animals, are euthanized in the U.S. each year. Many people get excited about owning a new dog, decide to get a puppy, and then pick one out at a pet shop or visit a breeder with a new litter. However, there are so many wonderful, friendly dogs in need of adoption, including puppies and purebreds. Some of these dogs might even be a better fit for a family than a new puppy; for instance, some adult dogs in need of adoption are already housebroken and obedience trained. Adoption is typically much less expensive than purchasing a dog. People who adopt dogs find the experience extremely rewarding, bond very closely with their dogs, and have the added satisfaction of knowing that one less animal has to be euthanized.
