Rescue Me ID: 14-09-19-00467Scamper (male)

Shih Tzu    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Not Good w/ Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Abused/Neglected, Fearful/Anxious

Scamper is a nine-pound blond who needs owners who want him with them whether home or out. Current owner has moved in with elderly parents and the seniors cannot adjust to having a dog, any dog. Scamper was the runt of the litter and must have been food poisoned or bit when he went to eat. He will back up from sirloin steak. He needs encouragement to 'smell' the food and then to taste it. His anxiety level is high when separated from the family or driving in the car unless he can be on your lap. Current owner has had to take on care for an elderly aunt seven hours away and Scamper is not doing well on the trips twice monthly. He might not ... (Read More)do well being an SPCA adoption if the new owners aren't patient and understanding of his special needs. He can 'talk' and will bark at the activity or subject matter he wants: 'pee' , 'walk', 'go to bed', 'puppy food', 'drink of water'. He has the cutest little face --- almost as if he has makeup on around the eyes. He likes his ears scratched and dislikes baths, of course. He is the size of a newborn baby almost so it is easy to cuddle. He snuggles into the owner's body on top of the covers (not under). He loves to go for walks and meet other 'puppies'. When his puppy friends' names are mentioned he will do the wolf call in recognition of them. He remembers his puppy friends from a year ago even. Being the runt he doesn't have as much hair per square inch as other ShiH Tzu dogs, so he gets hot or cold more readily than his companion Shih Tzu who is normal weight and size. Scamper will thrive with calm, patient owners who pamper him as their constant companion. He needs new owners as soon as possible. (Less)

Lucy is a very loving saint and I take her to work everyday in my salon she loves people and children she plays very nicely with our lab however she just had been unable to get along with our small poodle because our poodle is cranky and bossy and lucy is fed up with her nipping and barking. The vet said Lucy would probably be better in a home where there are no small dogs. she is not used to being alone longer then 5 hours at a time because she has always had company or been at work with me. Saint Bernard Mix    Age: Young Adult

Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

We are looking at finding a new home for our St-Bernard (mixed with Newfoundlander) Goliath. He is a fantastic companion and a cherished part of our family, however we have had to make a difficult decision to find him a new home in the recent months. In January 2013 we welcomed 2 new additions to our home - twin baby girls. Unfortunately, this changed our family dynamic and Goliath started to change a little. At first he became very protective of the house (barking at the door, where previously he would not have done so) and being more alert to the comings and goings of the household. As time passed his obedience declined and he became more ... (Read More)grumpy (he grumbles softly when asked to do he doesn't want to). The difficult decision to find him a new home came last month when growled and barked at the girls who were playing with him at a time he wasn't in the mood to play with them. It is important to specify that Goliath has NEVER bit anyone and he is actually quite gentle for such a big dog. We simply want to ensure the utmost safety of our young children. We believe his change of attitude stems from his sadness linked to the unfortunately reduced attention he has been receiving since our family dynamic has changed. On a more positive note, Goliath is a fantastic dog with a lot of great qualities. He is very friendly to all, even complete strangers. He is energetic and vivacious during family outings and loves making new friends. He also gets along well with other dogs, and plays gently even in crowded 'off leash' parks. He handles grooming's very well and always receive extremely positive feedback from groomers. He is crated trained and able to remain calm in a kennel (although he has never had to live or sleep in a crate since he was a puppy). He is also perfectly 'potty trained' as he will ask for the door every time he needs to go and will wait patiently until he is let out. He never has toilet 'accidents' even when left unsupervised for the day. He also doesn't chew on anything other than his own toys. He loves 'Dino Bones' and they keep him busy and satisfied for a few months at a time. We are very proud to have a St-Bernard that has not destroyed anything in our house. Goliath is also in good health, up to date with all immunizations and free of parasites. He is also chipped and neutered. (Less)

Animal ID: Panda071404Panda (female)

Newfoundland Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Not Good w/ Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Panda is a large (95 pound) Newfoundland/Ackbash cross. She has been a wonderful pet for our family but our work and living situation is changing so we are looking for the perfect new home for her. Check out her Facebook page - (Panda Matthews) She is 3 (birthday July 14, 2011). We bought her at 6 weeks old from the family who had bred her mom. Panda's mom, Annie, is a gorgeous pure white Ackbash and her father is Bruno, a purebred Newfie. (there is a pic of Annie with Panda as a pup on her FB page). Panda was from the second litter of these two - because the pups had been so gorgeous and were in demand. Panda seems to have traits ... (Read More)from both breeds. She is lazy and sleepy like a Newfie but also loves the outdoors and would do well guarding a farm, as her mom did. (Although when, I say 'guard', I don't mean against humans - but if a fox or racoon came on the property, I could see her being aggressive with it - at least, in theory - she has never actually done this). She is good with people, including children. The only concern is with her size. If she gets excited, she could jump or knock over an older person or a child. She is a bit oblivious to own power and size. She is very tall and lean. She has had obedience training but is not always responsive off-leash. She has been spayed. She enjoys the comforts of home and has a small area of our house where she is allowed to go (not the living room or upstairs). She has been used to sleeping indoors. She has a really beautiful, long coat and she sheds a lot. . She is a really lovely dog and we are heartbroken to have to re-locate her. (Less)

Weimaraner    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Sit right down and I will tell you a tale, the tale of a fateful trip. My trip began in Michigan and after a 3 hour car ride, I ended up in Canada, but I am by no means stranded! Live is good! My foster mom has named me Gilligan (Gilley for short) because I am such a friendly and happy go lucky fella, just like Gilligan from Gilligans Island. I am a 5-year-old boy that is very well mannered and has settled in quite quickly in my new foster home in Toronto Ontario. I love walks, rides in the car and trips to the beach. This weekend my foster mom took me into the water and I absolutely loved it! I can now go in all by myself. I walk well ... (Read More)on a leash but I do bark and leap at bicycles. I do not like them one bit. Because of this, I must always be on a leash. I would be fine with children living in the home, but none under 5, as I am quite hefty and would knock toddlers down quite easily. I am currently getting three long walks a day, along with a good hour at night at the leash free dog park to run and play with other dogs. I get along very well with other dogs and would be fine with another one in the home. Right now I have a foster sister named Willow and I have totally respected her space, toys and place on the bed. I do admit that it can get quite crowded with four of us in a queen-sized bed, so I often hop off and spend most of the night on my blankie, on the dog bed on the bedroom floor. Oh yeah, I snore big time, but this may be improved once I lose a few pounds. I have a lovely face, sweet jowls and a hiney that shakes like crazy when I am happy! All I need now is a permanent place to call my own and I will be golden! (Less)

Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current, Aggressive

Zulu is a happy and loving dog 99 percent of the time. However, there have been times when he has shown aggression and been territorial over his crate. He has bitten two friends of my daughter(both young adults)in the last 15 months. As long as everyone understands that his crate is off limits then we don't have a problem. We are afraid that he will decide that some other area inside or outside in the yard is also 'his turf' and may seriously harm someone, like perhaps a little kid or older person. We love him but we have to do something...

Trudy came to us as a stray dog, who was raising 6 puppies on her own, in the bush. Her puppies were fat, but she was almost starved to death. We caught her and the pups; we raised them and adopted all 6 out to good homes. Trudy is still with us. We have grown to love her dearly, and we will only let her go to exactly the right place. She has a very strong guard dog instinct and she is prepared to back up her bark with a bite....until she knows you. Then she is a very loyal dog, calm, confident, loving. We cannot adopt this dog out in the usual way....she can not go to a family or a person unless we were convinced somebody would always keep ... Pug Mix    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current, Blind

Meet Toby! He's an 8 year old 'Bug' who was born blind (one eye removed after birth, no vision out of other eye but no issues with it). He is one of the most AMAZING dogs we have ever met up with. Every one that meets him can't believe he has no vision. He is incredibly bright, can 'map out' a home in a very short time and learns commands fast. Very affectionate (will spend hours sitting on your lap or by your side on the couch---or just in his bed on the floor), walks on leash really well and follows voices better than any sighted dog around. He just wants to be in a home without small children as he can get spooked with sudden ... (Read More)movements. He is crate trained, rides extremely well in a car (just lies down and sleeps), and gets along with just about every dog he meets...he wants to play with them, but often gets frustrated when play gets too boisterous. Totally healthy and up to date on everything---he has been VERY well cared for by his previous owners who surrendered him with many many tears (and are still missing him). We would keep him in a heartbeat but our house is over flowing. GREAT for someone (no small children---ie under 8) who wants a companion and can give love, affection and has a little patience until he gets used to new surroundings, preferable with a fenced in backyard as he loves to wander about in the grass. This dog has SO much to give! If you are looking for an older pug who still has lots of life and energy, please think about this guy! Border Collie Mix    Age: Puppy

Hi, I have a Shiloh Sheppard/Collie cross dog. He is very affectionate, loving and full of energy. He knows basic commands:sit/stay/come/drop it and lay down. He obeys them most of the time unless he is distracted by another dog or person. So he still will need some consistent training to enforce them. Shiloh loves people, children, dogs and is very friendly and has been socialized with them since I had him. He wakes me up every morning by putting his two paws on me and giving me a kiss. Shiloh loves attention from his humans and cuddles. He can be a little afraid....if another dog is aggressive or fearful too, lastly he can be afraid ... (Read More)when introduced to any new situation. He loves runs and walks (goes to the dog parks frequently) and will need a home where he will get a lot of exercise. Besides his dry and wet food, he likes apples, carrots and cherries. I rescued him in November 2013, he was found in a ditch-stabbed through his thigh and would have froze to death. It was evident that he had never been in a house. Through patient training with me and great assistance from my Golden retriever THOR, he has come a long way from being a skinny scared puppy. He is house trained and can be left in the house with out destroying anything. Although, I have only left him a few times in the house without my other dog. He has been left alone with Thor for 8 hrs without any destruction. I do have stuffed animals for him and bones which he does chew when I leave the house. He does not like it when people are on a swing or using the vacuum. Also my sub pump freaks him out. I am looking to find Shiloh a home with another dog preferably. He is very attached to my dog Thor, or alternatively, with someone who will be affectionate to him as he requires interaction with a human or other dogs. I also have a cat that he is good with, but at times he tries to play with my cat, who wants nothing to do with that. To re-iterate Shiloh will need a home where he is exercised daily and a patient caring supportive human to give him the confidence when entering new situations. I run at least 1 hr/day and Shiloh could keep going. He would do well on a farm, however I don't want him to be the sole farm dog, left outside 24/7, in a barn without human interaction. The reason I am looking to re home Shiloh, is so that I can help other dogs in need. He is ready to go to his forever home. When he was rescued from the ditch he was taken into the Humane's Society where they fixed his injury and gave him his shots for the year, neutered him and had him micro chipped. I have all the documents from the Humane's society which I will provide the new owners, along with his pet bed, toys, food and I also have an insulated dog house (dog house for a fee). I would also ask that I come to Shiloh's new home to view the property in order to insure he will be living in a dog friendly home. Shiloh will not do well as a chained dog. He will need a yard where he can run around or a farm. Please contact me if you are interested in Shiloh Sheppy. P.S. he has completely healed from his injury. No issues. (Less)

Georgia is looking for an experienced home that can stick with her through the good and bad. She is approx 65lbs with a long sleek body and long legs - her mix is a best guess! Border Collie? Lab? Shepherd? Terrier?? She was recently adopted out to a family and then started to exhibit re-activity to other dogs which is new to her. She has lived in past foster homes with other dogs and has coexisted peacefully. Georgia is 2 1/2 years old physically, but was stunted mentally by a previous owner when they stopped all interactions with other dogs around the age of 7-8 months old. She is now a 2 1/2 year old dog with the brain of an immature ... (Read More)puppy - which is extremely frustrating for poor Georgia. This is where her re-activity originates, she does not understand social cues and this causes her to become frustrated and lash out. We just recently had Georgia reassessed by our trainer and she believes that Georgia can be rehabbed fairly easily, she just needs someone who has experience that can give her positive experiences. The more positive experiences she has, the less negative (reactive) ones she will have. Within an hour training session, we had Georgia walking 4 feet away from another calm dog and she was not paying him any attention. So we know she can do it, she just needs someone to help her get there. So, we are looking for an amazing home for Georgia that has dog experience, preferably with re-activity who can help her get over this phase of her life. That amazing home should also be the athletic kind as Georgia is an athletic girl, she loves running and walking and biking and hiking - you name it and she's up for it! Georgia has proven she can live with dog savvy cats but we prefer a home without children (and other dogs for right now). With some one on one work we know Georgia can be an amazing dog! She is so loving and cuddly and wants to be with you all the time. Georgia is reliably housetrained, and is crate trained but is not destructive and fine being left out alone. She also knows all her basic commands and is a smart cookie but can be stubborn. Georgia will need some help with recall and loose leash walking. (Less)

Brilliant, and terrific with other dogs at dog runs. She is a Malinois X

We are looking to rehome our 20 month old Border Collie/Maremma, Levon. Levon is a fun energetic dog that has lots of character. He would do great in a home with other dogs. We do not wish to rehome him in a house with kids as he has not been properly socialized with kids yet. We hope to rehome Levon on a farm as his border collie and maremma instincts are both strong. He does show territorial aggression which is the sole reason he is being rehomed. He is up to date with all his vaccines and has been neutered.     This sweet senior is 9 year old HOLLIE IS SO DESERVING OF A FOREVER HOME! who has a very sad story to tell before coming into Safehome Animal Rescue's care. She was brought into the care of Safehome from a shelter in Georgia where she was picked up as a stray. Staff there believe she may have been used as bait in a dog fighting ring when she was younger dog. On top of this, she tested positive for heart worm and had started developing fatty masses due to her age. As is always the case, we at Safehome were not deterred by her condition and brought her into our care. She has undergone the very difficult HW disease and we are thrilled to say ... (Read More)she is now heart worm free! In addition, she has been spayed, vaccinated, chipped and dewormed. She recently underwent surgery to remove 2 small tumors that thankfully, were all benign. Hollie is a lovely girl with a sweet and gentle disposition and she is ready to find a place to call her forever home where she will finally know the safety, comfort and love she so deserves. The ideal home would not have small dogs or cats. Hollie is wonderful with children, but is a strong girl weighing in at about 85 lbs. She is a calm dog that enjoys short walks and lots of affection...please email us for further info on HOLLIE (Less)

Dachshund    Age: Young Adult

Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current, Fearful/Anxious

Meet Cricket; she is a tiny little dog with a big personality. Despite her small size, Cricket is a going concern and would go go go all day if you let her. She loves going on hikes, splashing at the beach, playing fetch, chasing her friends, and working out treat puzzles. Cricket is a high energy dog who needs several hours of exercise each day. When it's time to relax Cricket is a great cuddler. She is a bit of a princess who would prefer to sleep on the couch with you, or snuggle in your computer chair if you let her. She's great at riding in the car (she has her own seat belt) and enjoys going on outings whenever she can. Prior to her ... (Read More)time with us, Cricket was not socialized with other dogs and many new experiences frightened her. We have been working hard to expose her to different animals, people & environments, and although she's learning quickly about many new things, some things still create challenges for her; Cricket's largest challenge is in meeting new dogs. She is uncomfortable with most new dogs at this time, however, once she makes a new doggy friend, she really enjoys playing. Our goal for Cricket will be to place her in a home with another dog who she gets along with and can learn from. This may take several meetings with the right match to succeed. Cricket is comfortable around older children (teenagers), but she tends to get over-stimulated by the excited play behaviour of younger kids. Therefore, it would be best if Cricket were in a home without young children. Cricket has a very strong prey-drive so should not be in a home with cats or small animals such as bunnies, hamsters, ferrets, etc. Cricket is more comfortable with women than she is with men. Cricket is listed as a special-needs dog because she has some neurological deficits. She can run & play just like any other dog, but she has an odd gait & skips as she walks. Cricket has been to see orthopedic & neurological specialists and although we don't have a firm diagnosis for Cricket's gait, it is strongly suspected that her cerebellum (the part of the brain responsible for coordination) did not develop fully. Cricket is not in any pain & she does not require any medical care or medications at this time. She has a hard time with stairs & it is suspected that she may see things slightly differently than your average dog, which may explain some of her nervous reactions to new stimuli. Cricket's new home will need to be prepared to continue to work with her & her trainer regularly. This will be a long-term commitment for her new home and is a requirement for adoption. If you would like to learn more about Cricket, please email us at victoriapets@gmail.com. She is currently in foster care but her foster mom would be happy to talk to you about her. (Less)

Kanela is approx 6 yrs old ~40lbs (in photo, on right) She's very into other dogs, extremely scared of people - barks or growls at strangers out of fear (we wonder if she might have been abused by whomever had her prior to us, we rescued her from a shelter). She would need someone with a lot of patience and another dog would likely help; preferably, Naoki :) Fit and healthy but has plaque (we had the vet clean them a couple years ago but it's hard to brush her teeth) Very calm indoors and very affectionate once she trusts someone and extremely patient with our 1 1/2 year, no aggression towards children at all.

Compatibility: Not Good with Other Dogs, Good with Adults (Not Kids)

Evie was tied with a chain and tormented by kids before she came to out rescue. She had an eye shot by a BB gun, so we had to have her eye removed. It has not disfigured her, rather she is so beautiful, with a permanent wink! She would dearly love to bond with a person, and in the shelter we don't have the 1:1 time she craves. Evie does not do well with other dogs and will not be placed where she would be with one. She should also not have to be where there are children. There is nothing to fear from her being aggressive with adults. Call 204-734-5149 and speak to Audrey.

PIease Read Before Adopting a Dog in Canada
Dogs can make good pets in Canada if they match your IifestyIe. Dogs have a reputation for being "man's best friend" for excellent reasons. Dogs are wonderful companions. Many breeds, in addition to being affectionate, devoted members of the family, are useful working dogs and guardians. Most dogs form tight bonds with their humans, and need to be cared for like the valuable family members they are. But sadly, some owners do not live up to the responsibility and involvement it takes to properly care for a dog throughout its life. Dogs can become the victims of neglect or active abuse. Some dogs receive tender, attentive care from their owners, but no longer have a home after their owner passes away or experiences a major life event that makes him unable to keep his dog. There are many more dogs than there are homes for dogs, and dogs that are not spayed or neutered can accidentally produce large numbers of puppies, exacerbating overpopulation. For this reason, three to four million dogs, many of them perfectly healthy and wonderful animals, are euthanized in the U.S. each year.

Many people get excited about owning a new dog, decide to get a puppy, and then pick one out at a pet shop or visit a breeder with a new litter. However, there are so many wonderful, friendly dogs in need of adoption, including puppies and purebreds. Some of these dogs might even be a better fit for a family than a new puppy; for instance, some adult dogs in need of adoption are already housebroken and obedience trained. Adoption is typically much less expensive than purchasing a dog. People who adopt dogs find the experience extremely rewarding, bond very closely with their dogs, and have the added satisfaction of knowing that one less animal has to be euthanized. If your family is ready for a canine companion, please consider adopting a dog!

lnteresting Dog Trivia Canada Fact Sheet
All dogs, even cute little lap dogs, are ultimately descended from domesticated wolves. There are hundreds of dog breeds with extremely varied characteristics and sizes, from the tiniest teacup Chihuahua to the hugest Mastiff, but all of these breeds make up just one species Canis lupus familiaris and can theoretically breed with one another (although there can be practical and health related constraints.) The dog was the earliest domesticated animal. Dogs are red-green colorblind. Dogs can hear much lower frequencies than humans, over twice as high as humans, and about four times as far as humans.
